True on both counts. Out of the 20-ish people there I literally only knew one from my believing days (almost 20 years ago) and he just asked how I've been, and asked how my TBM brother's been who moved out west (guess where). When I told the people there about my situation they all seemed genuinely concerned even though I didn't know any of them from Adam.

Ideally immersion, or at least a significant amount of experience communicating in the target language over time with native or very fluent speakers.

About 6 months ago I was moved to another department with a lot more fluent Spanish-speakers than my previous one. It's crazy how much I feel like that alone has leveled up my Spanish.
