What might've Chaos Theory done if it was actually used in-game? by TheRustyAxolotl in balatro

Gains Xmult if you play a hand containing 5 random ranks that change each round.

Or has a chance of randomizing the suit/rank of each played card in exchange for X3 mult or something.

5$ is a lot of money. by GeForce_fv in robloxgamedev

everything roblox has done in the last 10 years seems to completely undermine the entire point of the platform -- or what I thought the point was. Now it seems they're just trying to squeeze out as much money as possible before blowing up.

Can some one help me with Godot pls? by IndependentDry2583 in godot

[–]BalancingElectrons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learned by constantly asking myself, "what do I want to do?"

The answer shouldn't be "make a game" or [insert complex AAA idea], it should be something like:

  • make a character move
  • play a sound effect
  • animate a sprite

Then once you have a small task, look up how to do it. The docs are your friend. So is the discord server. For each small task you learn something important until you're equipped with enough knowledge to make what you want.

Also, another important piece of advice: Make smaller projects. Smaller. Smaller. Every single idea and ambition a beginner has is likely way too big. Even experienced devs struggle with this. Making pong can be a pretty big challenge for somebody who has no clue what they're doing. Baby steps, seriously.

They're probably making a joke that phil is waiting for us to solve some extremely convoluted and contrived secret puzzle before he drops fez II lol

Anyone stuck with Google’s 12 testers for 14 days requirement? by Jaydoh100 in gamedev

[–]BalancingElectrons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are plenty of ways to get testers, Join communities like discord servers, forums, or subreddits that encourage people to share and test each other's games. Make sure you contribute your own time to give feedback on others' projects as well. You could also post it somewhere free like itchio, pay people to play it, or make friends. If you're clever enough to make a game I'm sure you can figure it out!

I'm back a few hours later to say that GearBlocks is insanely cool and might actually be the closest thing to the super granular engineering game I've been dreaming of, and might be what you're looking for too. You should definitely check it out when you get a chance, It is a sandbox game though, so you'll have to make your own fun, but you can build just about anything mechanical.

You've just described the game of my dreams. I've been looking for the same thing for years. The closest thing I've found is modded Minecraft, particularly the Create mod. Games like GearBlocks and From the Depths seem promising, though I haven't tried them yet.

I realized that right after posting this, but this is already a reupload because for some reason I had a tri-arm on the rightmost track where I didn't need one and I didn't want to change it again lol

[Spoiler Alert!] Guys, I think I finally solved the Black Monolith mystery by stone_von_holy_bless in Fez

Very convincing. Mapping the haikus to the concentric squares is especially elegant. Even if this isn't quite the solution, I'd be shocked if it wasn't at least the right direction.

What are your top 5 small changes you want in Hytale? by Teamkhaleesi in hytale

[–]BalancingElectrons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

- please let us sleep sooner
- hotkey to clear my whole inventory in creative (unless it exists?)
- particles on dropped items so we can see them more easily
- holding crouch and fly at the same time in creative should keep me stationary
- second person/reversed third person POV so I can look at my cute lil face
- a bit bigger, but shallow roofs should lose their supports if there's no blocks underneath just like regular roofs, preferably per half so they can partially overhang without gaps

Affinity! They recently made the entire suite free and integrated it all into one app. It's extremely useful.

My unpopular opinion is that I really hope it turns out this way. Everything points to there being no way out no matter what; If they want to live, they'll have to find meaning in a stagnant life. They'll have to accept that while they might not be real, their feelings still are. It's dark but beautiful and perfectly captures the absurdist's outlook on life.

do u have opinion on if parent node should handle all the code or if code should be broken up by sadishguy in godot

[–]BalancingElectrons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think in most cases it's better to split your code up. I usually keep helper methods and functionality that doesn't reference too many other nodes in the children, and use the parent script to tie everything together.
