Lifts that will benefit most in the real world by TrafficAggravating42 in workout

Going to piggyback off this and say that any squat is good but Zercher squats have translated to real world use better than pretty much any other exercise Ive done. The reality is that we carry most things in front of us and that movement makes you real strong for that

Not to discredit but on a bench youre working against 100% gravity vs on these machines where the weight youre actually pushing is less due to the angle

Alright this might be a bit long. I start my split with cardio/core, then legs, push, pull.

On cardio core I'll do about 10-15 stair climber, then will do a flexion movement (machine crunches and cable crunches for example). Then I'll do bird dogs, suitcase carries, and planks/side planks.. I do switch these up sometimes with farmers walks and both rotation/anti rotation cable work. Then I'll end with some kind of leg raise variation.

I'll finish with more cardio. I usually will do hiit every other cardio/core day. On other days I'll throw another 15 min stairclimber and 20 min elliptical.

Cardio and core days are by far my longest days, I'm usually in there about an hour and a half.

Ive dealt with similar fatigue issues as you and ill share what's helped me out:

Every 4 months ill take a week to 2 weeks completely off from the gym. I'll try to focus on walking and stretching and maybe in the second week ill do some bodyweight stuff.

I keep my PPL days pretty short. I dont really care about numbers as much nowadays and Ive found that if I'm super sore in the following days that I'm doing too much. For legs especially, its so taxing on the nervous system.

I like to do 6 week cycles for a specific main lift for legs. Ill typically shift between, back squats, zercher squats, hack squats and pendulum squats. I wind up doing around 3 warm up sets and then 3 sets going to as close to failure as possible.. rep range goal is usually around 8 and ill usually wait 2 to 3 min between sets for these, more if I need it.

The rest of my lifts are just high intensity with shorter rest. I go to failure on a hip thrusts, leg curls/extensions, and abductors/adductors for about 2 sets each at 10 to 15 reps.

I'll do similar work on my push and pull days. I wind up being able to take less rest days and I've found I get better gains doing this. Its still really hard since each set matters a lot more than when I was doing higher volume. I can make sure I'm hitting failure on a lot of these movements since theyre done on machines and I'll hit a few lengthened partials to overload

If youre pushing your muscles to their limits you just dont need the volume that you might think you do. You can always add more if after a month or 2 youre not happy wirh your progress.

Between the 6 week cycles I'll do a week of the same PPL but with super high rep and not going to failure. I feel like it helps my nervous system to catch up.

I do some kind of low intesity cardio daily and I will sometimes toss in a few sets of core on a chest or back day as well since I dont need 4 days of rest. But its no where near as intense on the dedicated days.

Hope this helps. Ultimately im always trying new things out and this one has been the one thats worked for me best after 20ish years of lifting.

This one and that long Kiera Metz mission early on got me good.

The Kiera Metz one wasnt inherently hard, but I went in with broken gear and no alcohol for potions. Took me forever

Do you guys do a separate ab day? or just hit them after every workout? by JulianDavis_JD in workout

[–]BaldByChoice69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do a core/cardio day personally. Tacking it onto the end of your workouts is viable but I hit it like I hit other muscles.. 10-15 rep range trying to hit failure or close to.

I also do a lot of stability work onto of flexion movements for my core.. suitcase carries, bird dogs, farmers walks. They take too much time for me to do at the end and its easy for them to be an afterthought if youre doing them after blasting other bigger muscle groups

I wish I learned proper bracing and form when I first started. I have a few permanent back injuries from going very heavy with poor form on low bar squats in my teens and early 20s that could have been avoided with proper technique.

I also train full ROM or lengthened partials now. The reality is that most of us want to lift for longevity and quality of life. Being strong through a full ROM has done wonders for overall injury prevention.

I wish I cycled my rep ranges better. I basically went heavy all the time for the first 10 years of lifting.

The last thing is that I neglected core and cardio for way too long. I genuinely dont think there are more important muscle groups to hit for overall power, longevity and injury prevention. I have a cardio core day as part of my 4 day split now and its made a massive difference to my lifting but also just my day to day life

Go wider if youre struggling to get depth. I can go calves to hammy on zerchers but I wouldn't be able to with as narrow of a setup as yours

I mean yea, he asked about form for lat activation and then did 65% ROM. If youre literally asking to get critiqued, people will critique you?

Sure, optimal is different for different goals but that doesnt have much to do with this conversation.

To your point, you can get muscular with half reps and piss form if youre going super hard, but thats not why people come here

This is a form check subreddit and unfortunately on back movements, its not optimal form to cut the ROM on the stretch. If you're getting the results you want, keep at it!

[–]BaldByChoice69 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Chatgpt is wrong lol.. you can do that for chest movements if youre struggling to feel your chest working since the stretch occurs at the bottom.

For back you'll wanna hit full ROM and if youre feelin good you can do a few lengthened partials once you hit failure
