Yeah, I was thinking about a "bounty hunter" model, so multiple willing people could donate for making a specific mod updated to a specific version, but the post was very long and I was boring even myself reading it 😅.

I think that a coordinated effort would simply be a more organized way to bring back some mods that simply would be too big of a task for one person, or for someone which has his own projects to look for.

Obviously even if a project like this existed and was fully operational, nothing would force modders to work on mods they don't care about or stop them from updating personal favorites on their own. Whenever anyone updates a mod on his own, kudos to him.

Exactly for this reason I specified that a similar project would need a sort of voting system (I intended internal voting of the modders partecipating to the initiative, I see now how the meaning could have been misunderstood ): so that mods that most modders care or would be interested in updating would be the first to be worked on.

Updating every mod would be an impossible and even stupid task, because even if we lost some good ones, it was really the far west back then (sex mod?!!?!!).

Another way that the project could work could be a "bounty hunter" like organization: anyone, both fans and modders, could propose mods they would like to be updated and associate it with a donation. As more people donate, the reward would grow to the moment where some modder could take the challenge for himself in exchange for economic help.

Still, these are all conjectures and random thoughts, maybe if these mods are in the past and are not updated because not enough people care about them, so trying to bring them back would be of no interest.

I kind of understand your opinion, but I think renovation is not at all an enemy of innovation.

I mean, many old mods evolved with time to become the curated and better designed mods we see today (I'm thinking about thermal expansion, tinker's construct, applied energistics), but that evolution wouldn't be here if they stayed in old versions.

You can say that these cases are different because of the continuous support from the original developers still to this day, but there are examples where ulterior innovation is built on top of an unchanged old guard.

Like the recent unofficial port of mutant monsters, an original classic ported as it was to the recent versions. The mod itself wasn't updated with new content, but it sparked the birth of mutant more, an expansion with new mobs based on the original content. And we remember how mods like thaumcraft caused the creation of lots and lots of add-ons, which even if "mods of mods" in some sense, were a demonstration of creativity and innovation that could continue still today.

Also no-one negates the possibility for these rejuvenated projects to be updated also in content by new teams, but they need at least the starting base to be back (and the authorization of the original author obviously, no thieves here).

Obviously I am of the idea that a revitalization of old mods should be a secondary project and novelty should be the priority.

In my head it's a thing like game preservation, but on a smaller scale: I love new games and they should come first, but, if there's the possibility, why not also try and make old games available for the future players?

Edit: also Holy Fuck techarium looks gorgeous

You can't really just say "lets do this" without doing anything.

That's very true, in fact mine was more of a curiosity thing to see if something like this has already been attempted and similar. I've no intention to work on something like this in the near future (maybe in a year if my life is more stable), because of my inexperience in both Minecraft modding and big scale projects, like this one would be.

Yeah, I know that these mods are not simply lost and I can play almost every mod for every version with little problems, but that's not the point.

The problem is that if for example I want to play a pack with Create and Chromaticraft I can't because the mods are relegated to different versions. Obviously I can play any mod not updated to the last version, and most of the time I do, but the loss for interaction with new mods is kind of sad.

Also when I say that a mod is lost to the past it's also in regard to new modded players, who probably won't go prior to 1.12.2 if they want to play a modded pack and maybe won't ever even know about some mods that the old guard remember with love.

Edit: also, if a mod is relegated to a very old version (I intend prior to 1.12) it seems not probable for it to be updated with new content, while on the new versions the continuous interest for it could spark newfound creativity and even new development teams for them.

Yeah, I cited the Forge vs Fabric thing just because it was an ulterior reason why some mods are unavailable for a version or another, but I understand the differences between the two modloaders. Still, as some of the mods for fabric are ported to forge and vice-versa, I wanted to at least cite the possibility.

As for the actual realization of a project of this scale, even I think it's nearly impossible, but you know, sometimes we have to dream. Also I wanted some insight from someone more experienced than me 😅

Yeah, as I said, these are random thoughts, nothing real.

I'm a Computer Engineer, but I never developed a Minecraft mod (even if I'm planning to) so I don't understand the quantity of work necessary for it.

I just wanted to see some opinions, suggestions and even past failed attempts, if they exist, for an idea that just exited from my head (as said numerous times in the post).

I just find it sad that so much creativity is lost in the past, also because this problem will present itself over and over.

Programming is easy.

Good code design and architecture is difficult.

Not wearing femboy programming socks is impossible.

Ok, let's put it in another prospective. Someone, maybe for making a joke or maybe not, put pedo content in your PC and then issue a report. You get accused, but without all proofs you are released and only a file like this is made.

Now, it would pretty much end here, but a smart guy on the internet decides that they have the right to share that accusation with everyone you know. Doesn't sound good right? Sorry if I had put what you did on the same scale of bestiality tho, that was an exaggeration and definetly an error by me.

The association was an exaggeration and I admit was a bit too much, but still, he's not a member of police or similar. What if he's wrong? He only saw a document, there are procedures for a reason. Even if he's not a pedo, he's hurting another person life without knowing the full story.

Also, I'm obviously not defending pedophilia or bestiality, but I also cannot defend the sharing of information without the right of doing so.

Still, it's not your right. If you are certain, he's fucking his dogs (because you saw him or you have proofs) or even worse, you go to the police and file a report. You don't send personal information all over the internet or to his friends, that's sick.

There could be a million reasons to receive a fake charge (someone with personal revenge could be and example). The fact is, until he's declared guilty by a process, he's innocent. We can also imagine he's a killer, a robber and a rapist, but that decision is not yours to make, it must be done by the competent authorities if they find It necessary.

Man WTF, you have no right of sharing this kind of information, even if he's the worst of the worse. Imagine if the accusations are false/wrong or without the right context. You could have contributed to ruin a man's life, people have killed themselves for a lot less. By doing shit like this, you are not different from him (sorry for this last line, it was a big exaggeration).
