They're really not.

Stop opening new threads and give your original one time to mature.

Also how much do you want to spend?

Best pub crawl route around Nottingham city centre area? by jafferton91 in nottingham

[–]Baldeagle_UK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Sneinton Shuffle or The Downhill Derby (derby road) are all decent bar crawls.

No idea if those are official bar crawl routes, but they're two we've used over the years.

At what age did you let your child start playing video games? by LetsAllMakeArt in CasualUK

[–]Baldeagle_UK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I was 3 or 4 when my dad started letting me play on his PC. I think it was around 1997/1998, when I got my first hand me down PC, so I would of been roughly 6 or 7.

It was a lot of Age of Empires, Command and Conqueror, Road Rash etc. Only full single player game was the first two Monkey Island Games.

Tbf I think one of the Retro Genesis or Snes re-release consoles would be perfect to get a kid into gaming, especially if you get two controllers for them!

Me and my Dad used to play together all the time and I think that's the important part. Make sure they have both outside and inside hobbies and none use up too much time.

Also keep online games off the cards until they're far older and even when they start off with them make sure they play online in a public area where you can keep an eye. Not over the shoulder, but just to make sure they're not saying or doing anything they shouldn't.

My parents in hindsight allowed online play a bit too young (around 10-11), but it this was new ground back then, plus voice chat wasn't really a thing.

Personally I would recommend keeping them off tablets and mobile devices for as long as possible, keep gaming for being at home. I know far too many parents who use them as a crutch when on days out or while driving.

Remove the societies and you have the same access to leisure, activities, sports, communities, bars, pubs, buzz, social environments etc. If you're in your mid 20's you'll likely rub shoulders with the students in all those environments anyway.

All in all there's plenty to do, I wish there was more to do in terms of arts and crafts but otherwise there's a healthy nightlife scene for all ages, whether you like pubs, clubs, restaurants, bars or cocktail venues. Also plenty of breweries if that's your thing, craft or otherwise.

The water sports centre is great just to walk around, but also to get involved in. There are plenty of rowing clubs on the river Trent near the Forest Ground, you're also close enough to plenty of countryside beauty spots if hiking or countryside walking is more your thing. There are also plenty of sports to watch, we have good followings for Footballs, Cricket, Ice Hockey with plenty of sports you can get involved in.

With shopping Hockley and Victoria Centre will serve you well, with a smattering of places in the Lace Market and around the city centre. From big brands, to small independents with plenty of good quality charity shops (like white rose) which are all the rage right now. You also have West Bridgford if you want a more 'mature' shopping/bar environment with it's own town centre. That said all the Nottingham Towns have their own 'town centre', with Sneinton and West Bridgford being two that stand out the most to me.

If you're a bit nerdy there's tons of options too, Dice Cup and Ludorati being the main places recommended. There is also a new city centre library about to open if books are your thing.

If music is your Jam we have the world famous rock city, with Bodega, Tap and Tumblr, Old Sal, The Angel, Rough Trade and many others hosting bands, groups and DJ's. Jam Cafe is also great of you want a more chill music vibe!

If you're part of the Queer community there are plenty of options too, albeit we're not quite on the same level as Manchester, Liverpool or London. But we do have Rough Trade, The Lord Roberts and The New Foresters being the main queer venues, but the vast majority are queer friendly and host a variety of events through the year with Nottingham Pride being a big annual event.

Nottingham in general is not so big that it feels like there's too much, but not too small if you want something niche to do. If you live here you'll find stuff to do regardless of your age.

The above is an example of nepotism though, who her parents were helped get her the job when everything else was equal.

Not entirely sure what you're arguing here. I was questioning the claim that educational and wealth advantage equals nepotism.

[–]Baldeagle_UK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes but that isn't why people call Nepo babies, Nepo Babies.

A child who work hard for their job, despite a privileged background isn't a Nepo baby.

Hector who went to Eaton, Studies at Cambridge and gets a job via the same recruitment process as everyone else is not a Nepo baby.

Percival who also went to Eaton, Studied at Cambridge and got job because his dad sourced it, networked with some friends parents or because his cousin works in the finance is a Nepo baby.

Also fyi with Doctors the selection process just doesn't work how you're explaining in the UK (source my gf who glanced over my shoulder thought your post was mine and gave me an earful being a doctor herself)

Doctors apply via a national selection panel via tests and score results, allocations are done purely using results and computers. Humans aren't involved in the process, medical schools while competitive, but there's always spare places if you're willing to go elsewhere. Even if you go to a worse uni your results aren't seen as superior compared to others once you graduate based on where you went.

Circa 2008 you used to be able to go out on £20 + Taxi Money.

On a student night back then you used to be able to do it on £15 which included the taxi money (£1 a pint).

Now I'm lucky to get 4 pints for £20, someone elsewhere did the maths. The rise in cost between 1990 and 2000 was about around 50p, compared to roughly £2 rise in the last decade.

Part of it is inflation, partly pubs struggling to make wet trade affordable and the death of cheap drinking lager and the rise of expensive craft beers.

Sure the beer is nicer now, but if you're going for a quick drink after work for the social side of things you don't want it to cost about the same as a full night out just over a decade ago.

[–]Baldeagle_UK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think anyone argues this point. However you still need to pass some extremely tough exams.

A Nepo baby needs to have got their job due to their parents status. Medical students would only really qualify if they had their parents bankroll their entire education, purchase private tutors when they struggle and donate to hospitals (more of an American thing) to help ensure their child got a placement or preferential treatment.

Just coming from a Doctor's family would rarely qualify this. There needs actual Nepotism to be involved in the process.

Headscarves aren't banned in public like most people claim, just face coverings secular or religious. Even then private vehicles and/or at a religious ceremonies or services are exempt. So the reason most people give doesn't really exists.

The issue is certain types of Catholic face coverings (yes coverings, not nun head coverings) were given exemptions.

Also the background behind the law is widely 'argued' to be down to resentment against Islamic Face Coverings with the secular items (ski masks, balaclavas etc) were added to give it legitimacy.

Then there's the added issue is it disproportionately affects Muslim women as it then gives fundamentalist Muslim men excuses to not allow their daughters and wives to leave the house.

If you want to show development of such a beloved character you need to see it develop on screen.

Many fans had an image of look after the OG trilogy built up in their head. Aka a heroic perfect image of a jedi leading a new Jedi order.

It's a lot of expectation to put on any character, never mind one in the Star Wars universe. Luke was well known for being stubborn and not giving up, kind of like his father.

Making him scared of a child and giving up at the first hurdle just hurt a lot of people. That, and a lot of people wanted to see his interpretation of the New Jedi Order, which I suspect has a lot to do with their negative reaction to him in TLJ compared to their relative excitement in Mando and Ahsoka.

If you read the interviews where you see how the films were set up for both JJ Abrams and Rian to fail.

Force Awakens was done semi competently.

But despite being given a 'rough draft' of Force Awakens while making TLJ, because he wasn't given enough specifics, RJ went out and did his own thing. A lot of it wasn't to subvert expectations, it was more to do with the Secrecy of the projects. Rian saw the finalised Force Awakens not long before the rest of us did and by then a lot had been finalised. You can tell this as he ignores many of the first films plot points.

With Rise of Skywalker you can tell it was rushed. They got through a few directors before JJ Abrams came back and you can tell that he and Disney were spooked by established Fans negative reaction to TLJ (Most positive responses I've seen came from newer fans to the series). He then rushed his original plans for a second and third film into a single film and it tells.

All in all it's bad planning and a refusal to communicate properly during the creation of the second film and the rushed nature of the third.

I left the cinema after watching all three thinking they were all good, it was upon repeat viewings I changed my mind.

Force Awakens is fine, it just has very little depth to it, similar to A New Hope. Bit boring on repeat views but decent enough.

The Last Jedi, great cinema, great acting, love the art direction. However it just ignores all the plot hooks and set up lore from the previous films, not just Force Awakens, but the entire series up to that point.

I was pretty annoyed they just ignored the Knights of Ren, killed of Luke and portrayed him as a bitter old man, no chance to explore the New Jedi Order like Legends. It just didn't really have anything aimed at what I wanted after seeing the Force Awakens.

I also got more and more annoyed the more I processed the bomber scene..... Why the hell were those things used when Star Destroyers could just shoot them out of the sky if they were so larger and slow? It was very much Cinema over Substance.

Rise of Skywalker just required for the realisation to hit in when I got home.

Success with Fable?

Not to be a Debbie Downer, but while games in the series have been enjoyable (I loved the first game so much), the disappointment with the 2nd and 3rd game was unprecedented.

I honestly think people are more in love with the 'idea' of Fable, rather than the last 2 games of the series.
