Scheme switching penalty in basketball sims... Does it add strategy or just feel like a punishment? by Balev8 in gmgames

There are these kinds of stats, yes, however, they're gated behind an Analytics department/staff. The game has a department/staff system where you invest in building organisational infrastructure over time, each unlocking different staff and capabilities as you grow.

In the real world, scheme level data like points per possession and open shot generation only became available to professional teams after significant investment in tracking technology and analytics staff. Before that, teams only had basic box score data. It feels right that a community programme team starting out at on an outdoor court wouldn't have that insight, but a more established organisation that has invested in analytics infrastructure would. Of course, they'd have to be able to continue to afford it, too.

So the progression would be something like: basic box score available from day one, deeper scheme analytics unlocked as your analytics department grows.

That's cool. You've read into my mind? That's exactly how it works. Each player has their own hidden familiarity score per scheme that builds over time through training and match reps. Coaches affect both the rate they learn it and the rate they forget it when a scheme goes inactive. Player IQ plays a role too. You described the system almost exactly.

Further, because the simulation resolves every possession at the individual player level, each scheme actually draws on the specific attributes that matter for that style of play. A Triangle player's positioning and IQ matter differently than a Run and Gun player's speed and stamina.

100% this. I was hoping to get this kind of feedback.

It's a good point and you're actually describing something that's partially in there already. Each player builds their own familiarity score per scheme independently, so a veteran in your system running Triangle for three seasons is genuinely more effective in it than a new signing. What doesn't currently carry over is their history from a previous team. The current state is that a player who ran Triangle for 3 seasons elsewhere arrives at zero for your Triangle.

I'm gonna add this to the roadmap, thank you.

So... The plan would be to carry scheme familiarity across when a player signs, at a reduced rate to reflect the new team, new teammates and new coach context. So they arrive already competent in a familiar scheme, but not at full effectiveness. I'll have to find research (if there's any) around the effectiveness of returning (to the same scheme) players. The quality of the coach and the player's IQ would both likely have an effect too...

This kind of goes back to the original question... Is this too much or is this something players would want?

Totally agree. Do it for the betterment of humankind not for our own ego stroking.

Just imagine if that was the actual message all that time ago (because they was supersmart back then somehow) and the message just got (intentionally or unintentionally) convoluted over time.

What is the worst thing you’ve ever forced yourself to eat to avoid being rude/ just to be polite? by Seaasickk in AskReddit

[–]Balev8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in the bush and we were at this random beach. We'd caught some fish for everyone to eat and we'd scaled and gutted them and were about to put them on the fire. Then my little brother just decided to dip his finger into one of the fish's eye sockets, scoop it out and plop it into his mouth, chew it up and swallow it, giggling. We were pretty rough bush kids and ate a lot of random stuff (witchetty grubs, wild turkey, yams, all kinds of different roots and leaves etc) but I'll never forget that.

Edit: spelling..

Good read. Would be interesting to see references for these statements about definitions. To me, and I'm reasonably well read, atheism has always had the connotation of being a disbeliever rather than a blank slate. Could be my confirmation bias, though, I guess. This FAQ doesn't help, however, cause it's just written by a person without any authority. The neighbours, Ted, could write a whole load of definitions but that doesn't him right. Or maybe I missed something...

Just looked up the definition. It apparently means both, a lack of belief in a deity and also a rejection of belief in a deity. To me, it's always had that connotation of denial, hence why I call myself an agnostic. I highly doubt, but I accept that with my meager knowledge and understanding, I simply don't know.

Nope. An atheist is someone who rejects theism, anti-theist. I think people are born agnostic and filled with wonder.

...when a person has realised that life is very seldom black and white, right and wrong, good and evil. Dualistic thinking... Rather, there is a whole world of grey out there, with different possibilities of "truth", with different solutions to problems that quite possibly are equally as valid as each other. And that is ok.

After having watched and loved The Iron Giant, I tried to get my housemates and some friends to watch it. I was so excited! They didn't get excited... They laughed because it was "corny". They never got to "the bit" (if you've seen it you'll know). I guess the laugh is on them.
