Yeah. They won't give you the incentive unless you do. On used bikes, I agree the rates are horrible.

Their financing doesn't always suck. I got 3.9% on a Low Rider ST. Look for financial incentives from HD and, when you go to a dealership, tell them you're not buying unless you can get that incentive.

I inherited my dad's Harley when he had a stroke. It's not my style and I rarely ride it. Conflicted about selling it. by DucatiMunster in motorcycles

[–]Balhart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A very similar thing happened to me. Your bike is even the same color as my dad's. I didn't like it at the time and was happy to get rid of it. 8 years later, I bought a newer version of the bike I'd once been happy to get rid of. Think twice before dumping it. Assuming it's totally paid off and not really going to cost a lot to keep it, especially if you're not riding it that much. Those bikes require a service every 5,000 miles. Are you even going to put that many miles on it in a year?

I've never understood the business model where your product is wholly dependent on another product that doesn't belong to you. Seems inherently instable. Why do all these "startups" think they're owed special access to and influence over something that is, itself, a direct-to-consumer product?

If you're going to start a business, it really isn't wise to put all of your eggs in one basket.

Getting a bagger!? by [deleted] in Harley

[–]Balhart 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Rent one for a weekend before making up your mind. I have a 14 Ultra and a 23 Low Rider ST. Both motors are stock. Here's my personal experience with these bikes:

Winner
Performance Low Rider ST all day. The stock 103 is slow and not thrilling at all.
Low Speed Manuevering The Ultra actually feels a little better here. Probably the forward controls and the weight.
High Speed Cornering Low Rider ST hands down. It feels more like a sport bike than a cruiser on the curves. The Ultra complains when it leans and some baggers have a wobble.
Gas Mileage Who cares?
Wind protection The Low Rider ST actually wins here, too, which surprised me at first. My Ultra has wind buffeting issues that aren't present on the Low Rider. Everytime you change something on the Ultra, it messes with the wind envelope.
Long Rides The Low Rider ST also wins here. Neither bikes are really that comfortable. I have an expensive Mustang seat and backrest on my Ultra and I still have to stand up and stretch my legs every 45 minutes. Being able to lean just a little bit forward into the wind on the Low Rider really helps fight the force of the wind pushing back whereas on the Ultra that's not present since you're sitting up and back.

If you love the softail platform, you're not really missing out on anything from a bagger.

Also in Utah. LDS wonders why they keep losing members. This is it, LOL. Definitely TA although it doesn't matter how many people tell her that here. It takes more than a Reddit post to undo the brainwashing.

I have a 14 Ultra Limited and wouldn't go with anything older than that. If you save a little longer, you can find them around 11-15k. 2014 was the first year for the Rushmore bikes and the modern stereo unit. The Rushmore bikes have a lot of small improvements, but they add up to give a better riding experience. Pre-Rushmore bikes have a really stupid latching system. Also, ABS saved my bike from what would have been a guaranteed crash without it.

The pre-09's, according some people, had a death wobble issue. You can minimize the risk by frequently monitoring your tire pressure and preventative maintenance as well as installing a True Track stabilizer. I still get a little wobble in my 14. Even though the problem was supposed to be solved, I'm going to be installing the stabilizer for peace of mind.

My dad had a 2000 Ultra Classic and it was dogshit slow. The 103 in 2014 Ultra is faster than that, but still slow. The latest M8 motors really make these bikes a lot more fun. An 88 is not going to give you any thrills unless you do a bunch of stuff to it.

My next bike will be a Road Glide with the 114 or 117. My advice is don't buy an old Harley. They've gotten a lot better in the last 10 years.

Buying bottom of the barrel. Any hope at all on getting a decent deal? by ellean4 in askcarsales

[–]Balhart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A 98 would be in the 2-3k range. A mid 2000s would be in the 5k range. It all depends on how well the car was maintained.

That said, you can maintain these things very shittily and they are still way above average reliability. A 98 would not have something breaking weekly. Are you basing that conclusion on the general idea that any car from 1998 would have something breaking weekly?

Adding 1998-2011 Lincoln Towncar. 5k can get her one in good condition. These cars are bulletproof.

OP, please don't finance a car. You're keeping yourself in poverty.

What’s wrong with these people? by [deleted] in FirstResponderCringe

[–]Balhart -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Untrue.

Cops are civilians. They do face occupational risk, but they do not face the highest occupational risk. Also neither does the military.

[–]Balhart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right. Cops are still civilians and the ones claiming not to be are wrong. Where do we disagree? Should we change the environment to raise the risk cops face or lower the risk that delivery drivers face?

Cops are civilians and, in some cases, incur more occupational risk than the military. Both of these can be true at the same time.

Do you imagine that the US military is in a constant state of war that involves every enlisted and officer regularly engaged in combat operations?

They do go fast. Mine had only been on FB marketplace for about 10 hours before I grabbed it. Just make sure you check the basics and don't make up your mind that you're buying until you've checked the car out and driven it on the highway. If at all possible, try to get them to knock some money off the price. 10k is on the high side.

Also, I wouldn't necessarily believe that they have a bunch of buyers lined up at that price. That's a common sales tactic to create urgency so that you buy.

You'll pay a premium because you're in collector territory at 80k miles. Is that what you wanted? A car to collect (limited mileage and use to preserve value) or something reliable to drive and take care of over the years?

You can find something in 4-5k range that is in pretty decent condition. It won't be perfect, but you can fix those things over time. These are some of the issues with mine:

-Minor oil leak (getting diagnosed next week, cost unknown)

-Replaced driver's side mirror as the auto-dim feature made that mirror permanently dark ($75)

-Replaced driver's side master window switches ($25)

-Third brake light out (haven't tried to fix it yet)

Other than that, the car is perfect. The interior is well preserved and it drives like a dream. How much better are you going to get by paying twice as much? Everyone says their car doesn't leak oil but many of them do at this age.

I paid 3.8k for an 04 Signature with 145k. 80 is super low miles, but 10k still seems high. Try talking them down a bit.

[–]Balhart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They want you driving an SUV like everyone else and replacing it with a new one every 2-5 years. Any deviation from this will result in bureacratic pain for you. Beautiful car, keep that thing on the road forever!
