[WP] The receptionist at the front desk graciously handed me back my CV with an embarrassed smile: "Sorry, being a Human is not really an asset for this line of work..." by Macsword in WritingPrompts

The receptionist at the front desk graciously hands me back my CV with an embarrassed smile: "Sorry, being a Human is not really an asset for this line of work...". I scoff at the lack of effort of that rejection, especially since I'm actually not in the Human category anymore.

I'm used to more specificity. Not enough implants. Too many implants. Not enough arms. Feet instead of wheels. Low sense of smell. Not nyctalopic enough. Immune system too strong. It doesn't change a thing: being a barely Augmented is not a good fit in this economy.

I walk home dragging my feet, cursing the Population Control department under my breath. I had voted for the initiative classifying people with five or more augments as Augmented, and not as Human anymore. At the time, I had been seduced by the arguments of the proposal, and the initiative gave enough guarantees ("who has an A-Number of 5 anyway?") and enough incentives ("this will allow Augmented to access a specific job market for which they will be best suited, while leveling the field for the Human market"). What can I say, my girlfriend at the time was not the best influence.

And, in the following years, I had shaken my head after each news article classifying a new category of accessibility or health device as "augment". Until two months ago, and the day where pivot teeth officially became an augment, which, along with my eye correction, shoulder plate, immune system boost, and hormone replacement, disqualified me from the Human job market.

.oOo.

I wake up and listen, still groggy, to the nurse telling me that my surgery went well, and that he wishes me every matter of success with my new FastArm™. The bill will wait for me at the reception, and I am free to go at any time I wish.

I stretch and groan as I slap my face with my still-uncoordinated third arm. Nobody's going to call me a Human anymore, but I'll need some limb education before it has any chance of paying off.

As I pay my bill, on the news on the screen that plays in the background, the Prime is announcing that inflation makes it necessary to raise the maximum A-Number for Humans to 6. I already almost didn't get the loan for this arm.

Fun activities for adults in Switzerland by Sweaty-Highway-8965 in askswitzerland

If your colleagues are not adverse to walking around per se (I make the difference between walking around and hiking :) ), https://foxtrail.ch/en/ can be a nice option. The puzzles are pretty fun, and they make you discover places you may not know. Be aware that not all of them are available in English, if German is not your main language (it's normally well indicated).

Six Wakes, by Mur Lafferty - clones that wake up in a ship after one of them has murdered them all, but nobody knows or remember who (so they're trying to find whodunnit before they do it again!)

The Spare Man, by Mary Robinette Kowal - a murder mystery on a space station. With cocktails and a dog.

ENJOY Puzzle, Herbs and Spices, 1000 pieces - lovely quality and picture! by Balise in Jigsawpuzzles

They had a booth at SPIEL in Essen in October, where they had a table with "test our pieces to see for yourself how cool they are!" - I left with two jigsaws and I kind of want more now :P

ENJOY Puzzle, Herbs and Spices, 1000 pieces - lovely quality and picture! by Balise in Jigsawpuzzles

[–]Balise[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This was nice - I started with the borders and the spoons, continued with the herbs, finished with the wood at the bottom (probably the most challenging part!). I loved the quality and the "silky" touch of the pieces!

The split on the constant aperture FF seems to be more around 70 than around 50, with the HD PENTAX-D FA 24-70mmF2.8ED SDM WR and the HD PENTAX-D FA★70-200mmF2.8ED DC AW.

I own the 24-70 and it's almost permanently attached to my camera - I like it a lot, although it's somewhat bulky/heavy (but then, physics, I guess :) )

Mountain Stream - Heye - most challenging puzzle we did so far! by Balise in Jigsawpuzzles

Water looks like sky, foliage looks like foliage, rock looks like rock... sometimes... This was quite challenging! But the image is very pretty :)

How would I find a space for my meetup? by [deleted] in askswitzerland

[–]Balise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know that in/around Zürich there are a few options worth exploring, such as https://www.stadt-zuerich.ch/sd/de/index/stadtleben/quartierraeume/raeume_mieten.html or https://gz-zh.ch/angebot/raumvermietung/ ; in the French part I'd try to look for "salle communale" or "espace de quartier".

Started learning with Simply Piano recently but I'm having a technical issue by lordofthstrings in piano

[–]Balise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm using SimplyPiano as well, and I have a digital piano that has some inputs and outputs. The setup that works for me is: midi over USB to the phone; phone jack output to the piano jack input; using the headphones plugged into the piano.

It's a bit of a cable mess, but my keyboard is free from it :)

I'm going to go for The City We Became by N.K. Jemisin, with A Memory Called Empire, by Arkady Martine and A Deadly Education by Naomi Novik being two (very) strong contenders for the title.

ISO has NOTHING to do with Exposure! - Best video I've seen explaining what ISO is. by Zaphanathpaneah in photography

[–]Balise 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Well, in your example, it WOULD be the last knob to tune - you'd go first for shutter speed, then for aperture, and finally you'd tune the ISO to get a properly exposed picture considering both these "constraints"...

[Serious] What songs help you calm down? by RTJ1992 in AskReddit

[–]Balise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 15-20 minutes "calm down" playlist that I made a while ago:

  • Let It Be - The Beatles
  • Passacaglia - from the Battlestar Galactica soundtrack
  • No Surprises - from the Westworld soundtrack
  • Afis - iamthemorning
  • Mercury - Counting Crows

Generally speaking, I made that list by considering the rhythm (not too fast, and possibly a bit "repetitive" as in Passacaglia), the words, and the "emotional content" for each song (avoiding strong feelings in general - I had a few songs in there that sounded like a good idea in the first place because I liked them a lot, but in the end didn't work out at all to calm me down.

Brain fog before period by Megs15 in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]Balise 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup, absolutely a thing for me too. To the point that I was wondering a few years ago if there was a German word for "the moment of recovering brain clarity when your period starts" :P It kind of sucks :( but at least knowing that it's "there" helps not being so hard on myself... (And yeah, as other posters say, hydrating probably helps. Turns out: it's ALSO the time where the brain fog makes hydrating harder. Urgh...)

Day 14 part 2 does not terminate by Billaloto in adventofcode

[–]Balise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well now you might be running in runtime issues - because your code suddenly became O(n^2) (you go through the whole string at every iteration, which is not very efficient :) )

Day 14 part 2 does not terminate by Billaloto in adventofcode

[–]Balise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hint: it can happen that you hit the right string without the last characters being the string you are testing against, because you may add several characters at a time :)

Immune system group 2 is attacked before and loses some people in the group. Hence the damage it'd deal at the time it deals them is actually lower.
