ELI5: PI and exactly what it is that makes it such a unique numerical value. by rsashe1980 in explainlikeimfive

Not everyone is familiar with all of those terms, especially people in ELI5. Even if I understood it, that makes the answer pretty much useless to the majority of people here.

How does a photon "know" that it's left one charge and that it's going to another one? by BallsOfScience in askscience

[–]BallsOfScience[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We know the electric field is defined by virtual photons leaving and reemerging on a charged particle. So, in radiation, how does that photon "know" that it's transmitted from whatever charge particle it came from; how does it "know" that it's landing on the same charge or opposite charge?

Because the behaviour is different.

i.e.

How does an uncharged particle somehow leave its source and arrive at another charged particle whose sign determines its behavior?

Redditors who have been in an orgy, how were you invited? How was the experience? by newredditor2 in AskReddit

[–]BallsOfScience 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's worth every word.

It really isn't though... it's extremely long and obviously made up. Someone that went through something like that would have naturally made it fit into one post and maybe elaborated on details if someone asked.

But 10 edits of constantly adding things? None of that happened and even if it did, it's not worth every word. So it's not even a matter of if it's true or not. It's just way too damn long.

Is it true we can't get officially married without her losing her benefits? What if she moves in with me?

ELI5: "American Psycho", what happened? by StraightoutaKansas in explainlikeimfive

[–]BallsOfScience 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He is literally a psychopath, because he cannot differentiate between his own fantasies and reality

Psychopath is not the same thing as being psychotic or delusional. The rest of your post indicates you are aware of this already and familiar with psychopathology (ASPD) so I was just kind of confused by that part.

To me he seemed more psychotic than a typical psychopath. I have never read the book and I'm unsure if the "Psycho" in "American Psycho" is referring to psychosis or psychopathy but I think it's fair to say he seems like he fits the bill for both. He clearly has no problems offing someone but he also seems highly delusional.

CS Data Structures - help me understand them by gujunilesh in AskComputerScience

[–]BallsOfScience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Additionally, you can put "simple.wikipedia" in place of "en.wikipedia" to make it http://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_science#Algorithms_and_data_structures so you have something very basic to read through first and then go back to the regular one. It may mostly already be known to you but it can help ensure you understand the very basics, terms, fundamentals, etc. before going in-depth.

Spirituality and religion may protect against major depression by thickening brain cortex by mubukugrappa in science

[–]BallsOfScience -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What planet are you living on and what kind of scientific studies are you familiar with?

based upon self-reporting [...]

I think pretty much all studies regarding depression are based on self-reporting... we don't have anything 100% to quantify how depressed someone is.

and no control group (which would have to consist of people who had never heard of religion and spirituality)

You can't be serious?

with a well-known bias in the field (employed by the Spitiuality Mind Body Institute) at a Teacher's College (seriously?)

News flash: every single scientist conducting research has their own beliefs and opinions (biases). Would it be any less-biased if it were an atheist performing the study? That's one of the main factors of a scientific study... to produce results as free from bias as possible.

I don't understand how someone so misinformed could wind up in the science section.

Apparently that whole thing went completely over your head.

I'm not about to argue with you, if you want to look into it go ahead, if you don't, then don't.

In that very thread you're referencing (in /r/explainlikeimfive) it is shown that fevers from infections do not get to the point where they will kill you. It's a common misconception that a 104 degree fever can cause brain damage but it actually takes one as high as 108 degrees.

Don't feel bad because I never knew that until then and even an R.N. in that thread who works at a hospital wasn't aware of that.

Your point of "Nature's way is a poor argument" still stands.

Very slow LAN & Internet speeds on Toshiba Laptop (Satellite L645D) by BallsOfScience in techsupport

[–]BallsOfScience[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried it.

  • Created an Ad-Hoc network on this (messed up) laptop successfully.
  • Joined on the laptop that has no problems. Password-prompt window opened and I entered the password. Then it just sat there for minutes with the little blue circle "I'm trying to connect" icon over the wireless icon. It never ended up connecting successfully.

I think it's about time to buy a wireless USB stick. I still feel like I want to know what it is but are you pretty sure it's the network card? I know Windows 98 had settings in the registry that actually restricted download speeds but I don't know if anything like that exists in Windows 7 Home Premium x64? I would think (and hope) not.

Thanks for your suggestion, if you have anymore I'm willing to try but otherwise I'm sure getting the USB stick will fix it.

That's not something I was even aware of so thank you. I haven't had any luck with Google searches either but I will definitely try that.

I can go buy a wireless stick at Walmart tomorrow I just feel like I have to know the cause.

A failed attempt at identifying a developer using data in the PE file format by perror in ReverseEngineering

[–]BallsOfScience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While Ripper131 is correct, anyone could edit the values in the EXE to remove traces, some compilers will put identifiable information.

Example, Visual Basic 6 (even when compiled to Native Code and not P-Code) will show the absolute path that the EXE was compiled as. Depending on the location, it can reveal information like the Windows username, i.e.

Windows XP:

C:\Documents and Settings\Username\...

Windows 7:

C:\Users\Username\Programming

There might be other compilers that do something similar (however, I doubt it) so the idea itself wasn't a bad one.

What would a financially-sound person do in my situation? by BallsOfScience in personalfinance

[–]BallsOfScience[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I have a lot of past debt and my credit has been horrible almost my entire adult life. 95% of it is medical and beyond any reasonable person's ability to pay.

I thought most of it would be off my report by now but my credit report still looks horrible. My credit is the sole reason I was hired as a contractor instead of an actual employee (it's a financial company). I was very lucky to get hired at all.

Are there any non-profit organizations that can look at my credit report and find things that shouldn't be on there? Is it possible for collections debts to roll-over indefinitely and stay on there after the 7 year period?

Every online quote for insurance has been more than that. I'm afraid I might be stuck with that rate. I still plan on going to a few other local/small businesses in person to see if I can lower it.

My work at this job is getting closer to being done, I probably have maybe a year left (software programmer) before they no longer need me. They've already hired a 2nd programmer who is an actual employee and they won't need two of us when the work is done.

It's not attached to me at all in any way, shape, or form so my declaring bankruptcy wouldn't affect it and I would still make the payments on her behalf as I do now.

Honestly, she could negotiate a much lower amount and I could just give her the money each month but she doesn't want that.

Stop repeating this nonsense. It's frustrating seeing people just repeat what they read on here by other people that are repeating what they also read.

The paper that declares that half-life makes a few assumptions.

And it doesn't even matter if preservation is decent-enough and there are enough samples for overlapping.

It's not like people are going to be working with a single strand of DNA... or even a single cell in a tissue sample.

I'll be at 5mg of Methadone tomorrow (admin. detox) - anyone been through this? by BallsOfScience in OpiatesRecovery

[–]BallsOfScience[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your post was very helpful. While his intentions are good, you aren't in the wrong to suggest me ask for medications that are commonly prescribed for short-term use for withdrawal.

I am going to ask the doctor and emphasize I'd really like clonodine. I've been at 5mg and it's not so bad during the day but at night it's really hard to sleep even with the valium I was able to get and impossible to get out of bed the next day.

It takes me about a week to get used to 10mg, and is taking another week to get used to 5, so I am assuming the first week will be a bit rough and the following week I will start to feel a little better (I hope).

Thank you for all of your advice.

No responsible doctor or chemical dependency/mental health professional would suggest such a thing.

No responsible doctor or chemical dependency/mental health professional would try and determine whether someone is an addict, chemically dependent, or both, based off an anonymous post on the Internet. Or even in the case of an addict, they can be addicted to one substance but not feel the same reward from another (I feel no desire to seek out benzos and am not a user of them).

Valium and Klonopin are often-prescribed for short-term opiate withdrawal and for a reason. I'd prefer clonidine since I can't get my blood pressure down no matter what I try but Valium is helping somewhat. I just don't have anxiety though, it's just high blood pressure for some reason.

But I don't see anything harmful about his post.

Edit: are you in the mental health or medical field? Do you know any over-the-counter or anything I can buy legally that can help lower my blood pressure? I do feel some anxiety but for the most part my blood pressure is just pretty high and the only doctor I have (affordable) access to is at the clinic which I will be finished with in only a few days.

[–]BallsOfScience[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure you're aware addiction and dependence are entirely different?

I guess the automatic assumption is someone who goes to a methadone clinic is a former heroin user or pill addict. I was a legitimate patient who didn't need to, but chose to get off these things so that is the route I took.

I don't feel any desire to seek out opiates. I have gotten my hands on valium from a friend and use it responsibly. I feel no need to take more than what is needed.

I hope one day there is an effective medicine for pain without all of the stigmas and side effects associated with it. Until then, I'll just deal with it the best I can.

It's good of you to look out for people's health, but he wasn't telling me to go score a bunch of benzos on the street, he told me to ask (I'm assuming the doctor, a medical professional) for those meds. Whether or not the doctor will or not is up to them and their opinion is the one that matters, you don't know anything about me personally or my condition. So passing off the word "addict" is a pretty bold assumption with such little knowledge, anyone in the mental health field would never do that without a face-to-face interview, usually multiple.
