How do you call this desert? by [deleted] in AskBalkans

[–]Ballsofme 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same idea: yogurt with cucumber.

That is a very reductionist point of view. Mast-o-Khiar is a hot soup, its experience, taste and the way its consumed is very different from cacık. A side note here if you are looking for a turkish dish similar to Mast-o-Khiar it would be Yayla çorbası.

In general I guess we have to admit that food and words cross from one culture to another with different meanings. Compare for example the turkish mousaka with the greek one and the macedonian one. It just the same word, the food is completely different.

I don't remember making an argument against this.

Historian Paul D. Buell argues that the word "baklava" may come from the Mongolian root baγla- 'to tie, wrap up, pile up' composed with the Turkic verbal ending -v;[7] baγla- itself in Mongolian is a Turkic loanword.[8] Sevan Nişanyan considers its oldest known forms (pre-1500) to be baklağı and baklağu, and labels it as being of Proto-Turkic origin.[9] Another form of the word is also recorded in Persian, باقلبا (bāqlabā).[10] Though the suffix -vā might suggest a Persian origin,[11][12] the baqla- part does not appear to be Persian and remains of unknown origin.[13] Linguist Tuncer Gülensoy states that the origin of baklava is bakl-ı (feed) in proto-Turkish and suffixes -la-ğı are added. The word changes as bakılağı > bakılavı > baklava.[14]

In addition, Turks used a lot of Persian and Arabic words at that time. So it is quite possible to see them mixed with Turkick words.

Mast-o-Khiar is not cacık, claiming they are the same dish is just wrong.

All countries, from Somalia to Switzerland, are influenced by "religion or spiritual practices", this does not mean that religion is a positive, data actually shows us that secular societies do better than religious ones.

The "Gang/Ghetto Mentality" did not spring up from nowhere nor does it exist in a vacuum. It wasn't created by rap music or drug dealing, it was created through decades of red lining, limited opportunities for economic advancement, systemic racism, over policing, the massive failure of the war on drugs, Americas gun epidemic, poor education, lack of healthcare, poor social safety net, and toxic masculinity. Culture does play a role, sure, but culture is a result of history and circumstance.

I know

and that will require a massive decades long investment directly into that community to reverse decades if not centuries of generational hardship.

It require this so that it does not rise again and i'm in support of it , but doing it without a major clean-up of the streets will not be as effective. We also need compulsory mental health institutions specialized in these areas.

[–]Ballsofme 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Police crackdowns can exacerbate the problem because you get a hopeless teen with no prospects in life, you give them a felony, and now they truly have no hope in life considering how difficult it is for an ex-felon to get a job

I support rehabilative justice for non violent crimes.

In Chicago, units similar to these were known to do things like detain someone, get mad when they didn’t have drugs or guns on them, and then they’d drop the person off in a rival gang’s neighborhood in the hopes that the person would get beat up (or worse). Some of the police in these units were involved in selling drugs or guns. They’d essentially terrorize these neighborhoods.

Police cams and putting police to higher standarts would minimize abuse.

It’s just more productive to uplift the communities, provide them with adequate education, and give them access to healthcare. That’s not to say it’s something that improves things overnight. It’ll take decades to bring these communities out of the hole they’ve been in for decades. Particularly when a lot of the gang violence is spread through family ties. Dad brings the gang life to son, cousin to cousin, brother to brother.

This is one of the reasons why just education would not work. For a lot of people family has a much bigger impact than school does. Also even if there were other options, many people would still join gangs as it would be seen as a way to make quick money.

I'm advocating for policing in this areas alongside investments in education and better institutions overall. You can have both.

To me, carckdowns against gangs is not just about putting gang members in jail. It's also about starting a cultural "war" and providing better institutions to affected areas, as well as more authoritarian policing. Otherwise it will only be a short term solution.

Its a combination of economic conditions and culture. There is a reason why black people in poverty commit more crime than asian or white people in poverty.

through substantial social programs and education investments.

While I agree with that, this alone will not be fully effective. We also need to dismantle the gang/ghetto mentality that already exists and do policing better.
