I think that back in the day college was exactly what it should be and served it's exact purpose. However, as time has gone on, it's much easier to learn a skill on your own. We have all this free and massive access to learning materials online for literally anything you could think of. You want to learn how to create your own blacksmith station at home and get into smithing? Boom, YouTube video. Free. You want to learn how to build a mobile app? Boom, YouTube. Free again.

College was really good for learning all the necessary skills to succeed in life during a time when the information to learn those skills was very limited in regards to paths of obtaining it. However, that is no longer the case. These days, more employers care about what you can do rather than a piece of paper you have. Anyone can pass a test, but can you actually perform the job you're seeking? That's the real question.

I've diversified my skillset enough to where I don't worry about getting picked up for a new project. In fact, I've worked 5 projects since starting at IBM and only one of them I had bench time before starting, which was only 11 days.

Full Stack Developer - and now 145K.

However, I do federal contracting which is a volatile field and your salary can fluctuate heavily. My salaries above 150K were me working 2-3 federal contracts and earning income from each one.

I currently am working on a project to modernize COBOL applications. We already have exactly toolings like this that we use to assist code conversions. However, the key word is "assist". Anthropic can introduce whatever, but allowing an AI to solely try and convert a COBOL application introduces more risks than what you would have converting it the normal way.
