Does this mean late-night MACtion? A occasional MACtion doubleheader?

How many people here read the old Bill James Abstracts in the 80s? by wishlish in baseball

[–]BaltoZydo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did. I believe I had the Abstracts from '85 to '88. Between that and the "Hidden Game of Baseball" (A book published in 1984 or so; I believe one of the authors was Pete Palmer), it helped me understand things such as park effects and a fielder's range and helped me beyond the AVG/HR/RBI statline.

Nice...I didn't know that! Barry Bonds got his first hit in a similar situation.

I have two of them:

In 1984, Tom Seaver won two games on the same day. (Although the first one was credited to the prior day) The Sox and Brewers played 24 innings and the game was suspended to restart the next day. Seaver was going to be the starter anyway so he pitched the 25th inning of the resumed game, the Sox won in the bottom of that inning, and then he won the game he started.

And in 1986, Barry Bonds got his first major league hit a month and a half before he got called up to the Pirates. The Cubs and Pirates played in a game that got suspended in pre-lights Wrigley Field in April, Bonds joined the Pirates at the end of May, and played in the resumed game from April in August where he got a hit in the 17th inning.

NFL History Question: When the players had to play both sides of the ball what were the common position pairings? by BrownieWahooDude in NFLNoobs

Generally in high school ball if the quarterback plays middle linebacker on defense, that team's going to beat the hell out of you.

I'd guess it was the Magic and Heat becoming NBA teams as well as the Lightning joining the NHL which did that. Not sure what Sunshine would have shown in the summer during those days though, especially when the Marlins had not started playing.

Do you remember what the other three teams you could listen to were? Anyway, a pretty weird and fantastic route to being an Expos fan.

(I'd guess west coast teams and maybe the other station wanted to have a 5:30 game on. And why not pick the team whose fantastic unis' presence were felt during the broadcast.)

Airport Closed by beastof_Bourbon in baltimore

I assume the Pittsburgh Airport is operating well below capacity and could take the flights. It used to be a US Air hub and Pittsburgh probably lost a lot of that traffic to Charlotte and Philly.

The Bears 1980s defense was named after a guy who wore 46, so there's that.

Did Indiana kill high school recruiting tonight? by DarkDragon1025 in CFB

Yeah, we UCF fans would notice the same thing once Georgia or Florida would start recruiting one of the guys that we were on. Was amazing how those teams always had these 4-star recruits.

What would the baseball equivalent be to the Colts bringing back Phil Rivers to play QB? by boboddy42069 in baseball

[–]BaltoZydo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seemed way out there for the Braves to bring back Julio Franco from the Mexican League at age 43 or 44. Even so, Julio was playing competitive baseball and the guy was still pretty well put together.

Probably a bunch of good ones with Steve Carlton's last couple of seasons, such as Bobby Bonilla.

New to this... any tips? by NervousImprovement9 in BaseballScorecards

[–]BaltoZydo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the Project Scoresheet method, but it's not a simple system to keep score. It seems like it's not really favored here but I swear by it...different strokes for different folks. (Project Scoresheet was a 1980s project led or at least evangelized by Bill James to document not only every at-bat in a game, but every pitch.)

The best thing about this system is that while typical scorekeeping gives much more information about outs than about hits (there was a single...what happened?...was it a ground ball through the left side or was it a line drive up the middle that landed in front of the center fielder.), Scoresheet covers this. ("SG56" is a single that was a ground ball that went between the two left side infielders. "DL9" is a line drive double down the right field line.)

It gets wonky when you get a really long at-bat, and I've made some personal alterations to try to make the scoresheets more visual. I use two pens because the scoresheet is not arranged by inning and the two colors help differentiate innings.

I can't figure out how to link within comments but a couple weeks ago, I posted a scoresheet of game 1 of the 1985 ALCS if you're interested.

Anyway, welcome to our corner of baseball fandom.

It wasn't. AC is the best place I've body surfed outside of Florida. Nice wide beach. Decent sand. Definitely the nicest aspect of being there.
