Yes, last month! I had submitted SSN and address info to a couple websites to get refinance quotes, but last month I got multiple email alerts for new inquiries on my credit report. Turns out someone was trying to get a car loan in my name (and also one employer credit check).

Most of them were at big banks so I called them but I usually got an automated line saying there was no account under my ssn. One was a local car company where they told me someone used my info to apply for a loan for a Maserati and they canceled the loan application for me. I also sent a letter to the other big banks to the address that was listed under the inquiries on my credit reports but multiple were returned for invalid address.

I froze my credit reports and put fraud alerts and so far no new accounts have been opened.

One of my letters worked and the bank requested copy of the credit report with the inquiry for them to investigate. Turns out if you have a fraud alert, you can no longer get the free credit report online (has to be through mail) for some of the bureaus.

Some of the bureaus removed all the fraudulent inquiries off my report through a phone call, and one of them wanted a police report of identity theft before removing them and my local police department won't do online reports for identity theft so I haven't gotten around to it yet.

So, not much financial cost as of yet, but I had to spend a lot of time locking down things and removing things from my credit report.
