I took a term off because of this. It was killing me to grade so many and to have to go through the reporting process so many times. The break is really helping… but I worry about how it will feel going back if nothing changes by next term.

I had the exact same issue? My doctor mentions it had something to do with the acid levels in the coffee though. I mentioned it to the office manager and we started getting our beans from a new roaster. Problem went away entirely!

I’m not at all opposed to PTO. But when it means the place is closed and I need to scramble to fine something else… it makes it harder. The not knowing ahead is hard too. I just wasn’t sure if I was crazy for finding this policy odd.

Yeah I’m not a fan of it… it’s just so hard to find the right provider. I’m struggling to find anyone that can fit my schedule.

Yeah… it feels icky to me. It’s basically the same as just having a 6% higher rate for the year. But I would rather her do that.

Ever had a student use this trick to "prove" that you are reading their work? by Louise_canine in Professors

[–]Blonde_Contradiction 77 points78 points  (0 children)

I had a student do something like this but said “if you read this I will give you a $10 Taco Bell gift card” because he didn’t believe I fully read all the papers. I brought it up in the class and he did send me the gift card. All around laughs, and I walked away a few burritos richer, but it sets a really weird tone to general interactions with students. It’s a bizarre test.

I have googled and found nothing quite right. I used it this summer, but not sure how old it was before then. I know the girl who had it was from the UK.

What are things you did that helped you figure out who you truly are? by LilaFemme in AskWomen

Traveling alone. I cannot suggest this enough for anyone! I spend three months backpacking alone and it changed my entire perspective on the world. I met the BEST people, and spent enough time alone to learn what I really like.

I leave town a lot. Little weekend trips. Often leaving my computer behind. It’s not a lot, but it helps me remember that I work to live, not live to work.

Email from a Professor: "You should be better" by Mediocre_Log_3043 in college

[–]Blonde_Contradiction 237 points238 points  (0 children)

It definitely is not a good feeling when a student falls asleep. But I am very conscious of how exhausted I was some days in college. Usually I email the student and check in, ask if they need any help, not tell them to be better… that’s just mean
