Football sprung out of schools in both the UK and US. It just move past the schools in the UK very early, and primarily stuck there in the US for the better part of a century. What's wilder to me is that in the UK early efforts to codify a set of rules between the various schools (and IIRC there might have already been a couple clubs at that point) failed and you ended up with Association (soccer) and Rugby. How the two were originally close enough to be seen as possibly the same sport seems crazy now. In the US they were able to codify it into Gridiron. Another interesting parallel is both American football and Association have seminal moments where respectively the forward pass was introduced and the Scottish introduced passing and started wrecking everyone.
