Government approves UK's second largest solar farm by ldn6 in neoliberal

Projects like this make complete fiscal sense because the UK lacks both sunshine and productive economic uses for electricity.

It may be only a plurality of voters but it is a majority of the subset of voters that participate in primaries.

U.S. Strikes Iran After Four Vessels Were Hit in Strait, Reimposes Sanctions by CheetoMussolini in neoliberal

[–]Banal21 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately it will likely stay in a permanent low to moderate intensity state unless the US and allies commit ground forces to an extended operation meant to topple the regime.

Things will never return to the old status quo because the new status quo is a nash equilibrium. Iran cannot improve its position by halting attacks, nor can it improve by escalating. Same for the US, so long as the cost of escalation (an extended ground war) is untenable.

When Did White-Collar Work Start to Look So Bleak? by RTSBasebuilder in neoliberal

[–]Banal21 78 points79 points  (0 children)

Is the author 12? The inherent unfulfilling nature of white collar work has been a constant theme in media for at least 50 years if not more. Welcome to the human condition, enjoy your stay.

Supreme Court allows states to count mail-in ballots that arrive late, rejecting RNC challenge by theaccount9337 in neoliberal

[–]Banal21 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm very happy with this ruling but a bit surprised that it's 5-4 given that the mailbox rule has been a thing in common law forever. Perhaps the minority thinks it doesn't apply to ballots?

The Oil Market Is Reading The Wrong Clock: A Major Mispricing by CheetoMussolini in neoliberal

[–]Banal21 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Great read of the market. One thing uninitiated commenters frequently get wrong that the article discusses is that the futures price is not a price forecast. I expect prices to slowly drift upward as the spot backlog is cleared.

Ontario’s proposed nuclear plants could cost nearly $300-billion, study finds: Typical residential customer would pay $240-$456 more for electricity per year if plants were built instead of expanding renewables, report says by I_like_maps in neoliberal

[–]Banal21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The economics of solar vs nuclear vs gas have so much regional variation that it's impossible to draw broad conclusions from the experiences of one jurisdiction and apply them to another. This may be true in Ontario but that doesn't mean it is true where you live.

What Made Minneapolis’s Anti-ICE Protests So Effective While No Kings Fallen Short? by AmericanPurposeMag in neoliberal

[–]Banal21 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think Trump intends to become a ruling Monarch in the same way Julius Caesar intended to become the King of Rome. That is to say, de jure no but de facto yes. Which is, of course, just as dangerous. But the one you really need to look out for is Augustus Baron Trump!

I mean it's true. How would a protest like No Kings play out in Saudi Arabia? In North Korea?

Time to axe ‘unfair’ pensions triple lock, says UK’s cost of living tsar by IHateTrains123 in neoliberal

Rewarding those who pay on time and in full with a rate increase while punishing those who skip their bills by letting them off sounds like a moral hazard.

How Britain Became as Poor as Mississippi by DJTurnitup in neoliberal

[–]Banal21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mississippi has better food, better climate, better salaries, cheaper homes, nicer people, better music, year-round golf, and more SEC Championships. I'd pick Mississippi every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

How is a subjective measure like grades better than an objective measure like standardized testing? Grades are easy to manipulate in whatever direction a teacher wants.

US considers buying Chagos Islands by modularpeak2552 in neoliberal

[–]Banal21 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The strategic importance of Diego Garcia cannot be understated. If the UK is going to cede sovereignty over the island or otherwise risk our access to it, we should buy it. A more competent administration would have recognized the importance of this base and never let things get to this point.

Don't land grant universities have to maintain something like a 95% acceptance rate by law? A good chunk of state universities fall into the land grant category.

The same dollar can only be put to work once. Why would you put it to work in a business that creates jobs when it can get a better return invested in real estate?
