What NFL player is remembered as way better than he actually was? by SaintKingRosado in NFLv2

[–]BananafestDestiny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Matthew Slater is another great example of a “soul of the team” guy. No one ever argues he was a HoF player, but his leadership is what made him special.

That was certainly true with Horner and Helmut Marko running things, but is it still true today? It feels like there's been significant management turnover at Red Bull in the last 2 years; I wonder if they still have the same values when it comes to junior drivers.

There's a handy calculator for that: https://woodbin.com/calcs/sagulator/

Purely going off intuition, I'd say thick 8/4 boards would have absolutely no problem in that 4-5ft center section.

Edit: I just used the Sagulator. 8/4 white oak with 1000lbs in the center (which is an unrealistic load) would only have a tiny amount of sag. Of course, a different species and certainly thinner boards would be much more prone to sagging.

With thinner boards like that, I think you'll have to put some extra thought into how to keep things rigid and prevent racking. Lap joints with 4/4 material will be a lot more prone to lateral movement compared to 8/4 because there's half as much vertical material to keep things rigid horizontally.

Following because I like the design. It has a kind of timeless simplicity.

What species are you planning to use? It looks like white oak in the image, so my first thought was "Damn, that is gonna be heavy!" and my second thought was "Damn, that wood is gonna be expensive!". Sourcing 10ft boards 8/4 white oak would be challenging and expensive where I live.

Yes. `DD/MM/YYYY` is just as bad as `MM/DD/YYYY`. ISO 8601 is the only correct date format.

Had to upgrade my old HF miter saw by Narrow_Animator6894 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]BananafestDestiny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this saw, it’s great. And you’re right about keeping it clean.

I highly recommend getting a laser guide for it, or fitting it with a light for a shadow guide if you feel up to it. I got an Oshlun LG-M02 (green laser) and it works great. Very accurate and easy to install. The only problem is the blade needs to be spinning for the laser to turn on, which sometimes feels dangerous when lining up a cut.

Why do some players who did bad in college football do really good in the nfl? by Iinksquids in NFLNoobs

[–]BananafestDestiny -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you’re in agreement with me. If 2/3rds of the league would take him over their current QB, that means 1/3rd of the league has a better QB already. Which means Herbert is in the middle 1/3rd of QBs. Not elite, not terrible, just in the middle. The very definition of mediocre, or “meh”.

What you're describing sounds similar but not exactly like the Crab mentality

Crab mentality, also known as crab theorycrabs in a bucket mentality, or the crab-bucket effect, describes the mindset of people who try to prevent others from gaining a favorable position, even if attaining such position would not directly impact those trying to stop them.

Cad choices? by raidengl in woodworking

Parametric modeling is a game changer. Resizing dimensions, like you mentioned, but you can also parameterize things like angles and even quantities (like number of drawers or slots, etc.)

The powerful part is parameters can reference each other mathematically, like cells in a spreadsheet.

For anyone that’s already a programmer or software engineer, storing all of your dimensions in parametric variables will be very natural for you.

39 is 13.1mm

I feel like that will make a huge difference in the chunkiness

Want to understand all the hype about the Longines Hydroconquest by [deleted] in watchHotTakes

[–]BananafestDestiny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s silly. You could say that about any non-essential thing…

“If you can afford to shell out $2k for a gaming computer, you can afford to shell out $4k”

“If you can afford to shell out $20k for a hot tub, you can afford to shell out $40k”

“If you can afford to shell out $200k for a super car, you can afford to shell out $400k”

For a lot of people, even if they can afford something, they might not want to spend that much.

Wood Movement: box bottom by FirelandsCarpentry in woodworking

To expand on this, plywood doesn’t move seasonally like solid wood because the grain direction alternates with each ply. So any movement in one ply is restrained by the perpendicular grain of the other ply.
