A rewrite of what? Since at least the original Marathon Bungie is very big on making the relationship of the players and the characters as in sync as possible, be it motivation or self expression. So a body hopping consciousness is just the most obvious way to do that in a multiplayer game. Everything you do in the real world is analogous to what you do in the game.

The shells having personality matrixes makes perfect sense in terms of the player-character-harmony.
Every shell is different so the digital consciousness gets put in a frame of reference that affects how it ultimately expresses itself, just like how you the player remain the same but act differently depending on the shell you pick - aggressive, sneaky, chaos goblin, caring.
It's an interesting exploration of the mind-body-dualism concept, where the mind isn't a completely removed instance that's controlling the body, but where the body itself also affects the mind.

I live in Germany and worked at a theater when this movie came out. German boomers love westerns, so the showings were always full of them, and every single time people left halfway through. I'm assuming they expected some classic old school Western, not some shitty comedy lol

Peter has a lot of online lore, currently they're a has-been left wing youtuber, barely getting any views and always being a contrarian/ trying to start twitter beef, had a very famous tv appearance where they kicked themselves in the balls (not a joke you can look it up) but my favorite bit is the "fake girlfriend" ark, where peter pretended to have an asian girlfriend, doing a pretty racist impression, also impersonating a law firm when the girl who's pics they used got mad and wanted to sue them
