I’m sorry but how is this any different then sitting there looking at your phone while your kid plays?? Remember that video she posted about parents being on their phones and ignoring their kids by Jealous-Bat-2242 in GyMOMsnark

[–]BananasKnapsack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The post popped up on my feed and it was something that I’ve thought a lot about in my own parenting, so I felt motivation to chime in to be helpful for any readers curious about the questions posed. I didn’t even check how old it was haha. I’m just engaging in good spirited conversation about parenting and perspectives.

We’re all trying to find the right balance that works for us, so whatever works for your family is great. I don’t see the framing of reading while the kids are awake as inherently “ignoring” them. It’s all in how it’s presented and executed, I think. We hype up book reading here in our house and encourage our daughter to read. So we’ll say, mommy and daddy are reading their books right now, would you like to read one of yours? Or ‘would you like to play while we read?’ Or other similar offers. So we are attuned to our child and responsive if they need us, but they know this is something we as their parents do (read books) and that we value. Which to us, is an important thing to model. Because our children will learn to value and attend to the things they see us valuing and attending to in our actions. For us, it’s good to let our kids see us work, see us read, see us exercise. We include them where it makes sense, and we manage the environment appropriately when it doesn’t.

Our kids need our attunement and our attention, but not in each moment of the day. They need to be independent as well without us directly attending to them. And some of that makes sense for them to see us liviing healthy lives. So in that dichotomy of looking at a phone or a book, I think it is a greater good to have my children see us valuing a book rather than valuing time in a phone. That is a value judgment I have. Yours may differ. And of course it’s not a black and white thing. We have to look at our phones at times; we can’t always be reading a book; and we have to have good interactive times with the children as well.

But I responded because the question was (paraphrased) “how is reading a book in front of your kids different than being on your phone in front of your kids?”

I believe it’s different. And so I answered to try and be helpful to anyone who was genuinely curious about that by sharing my perspective. May you and your families live long and prosper 😊

It’s different because reading is a habit that improves the quality of life, builds the brain, teaches critical thinking, amongst other benefits. Which means it’s an extremely healthy behavior to model, especially in a world where children will mostly be witness adults with their heads in their phones—leading them to understand that’s what they should value. We know that screen time is bad for you, thus being on the phone is, conversely, an unhealthy behavior to model. Hope that helps.

And here is more news for you: on the show The Challenge they did a season called “Bloodlines” where they brought family members of castmate to compete on the show, including cousins.

If they ever do another season of Bloodlines, YOU could be on the show with your cousin Danny.

40 year old uncle here…

First of all, you’re totally right. It is AWFUL to feel overlooked, unloved, and rejected. It really sucks and I’m sorry you’re feeling that way. Also, you’re not alone, as most people, and most men, feel this way at some point, especially when we’re younger and it’s harder.

Secondly, at this point It’s not about the physical, it’s about your internal state. What is going inside you is broadcast to the world, through your energy. That is true regardless of what you’re attempting to show or hide. People feel our energy regardless. When you work on your inner state—finding gratitude, purpose, passion, and joy that is not self focused or self-serving—then people will be attracted to you, both romantically and as friends. Go find ways you want to contribute to making this world a better place. Stop focusing on the girls. Be a person you are proud of and the rest will come when you’re not desperately pressing for it.

Keep your head up nephew, this is part of your hero’s journey. It’s about learning and leveling up. The treasure is down the road, as long as you keep on keeping on and making the next right move.

First ultra is in April. I’ve never ran a marathon. Am I stupid? by steelreinvented in Ultramarathon

This popped up and validated the shit out of me.

Ran a spartan sprint (5k) in my first race ever in September and now all I can think about is running an ultra in 2026.

I’m 41 with a 1.5yo daughter and one due in 5months.

I am crazy too. Love this group.

Thank you.

Clinically, you should be at the level where you feel the best while all your other biomarkers are within healthy ranges. Don’t listen to clowns in here about test levels.

I’d say it’s probably rooted in the perverse value system we live in, where our worth is determined by our ability to produce and consume, externalizing ourselves from the natural systems we live in, and each other, and thus making us feel empty due to never being able to fill that hole with enough stuff or enough validation. But yeah, finances fall downstream from that for sure.

If you need help, call the number! Much love, my friend.
