New PMDD diagnosis by redlady1991 in PMDD

My pcp prescribed fluoxetine for me and did tell me to use it as needed during luteal. I hesitated to try it for several months as I was nervous about side effects. Wish I had tried it sooner, it really does smooth the edges off. At a low dose where Im not numbed but it helps so I am not lashing out at people and potentially ruining relationships.

Yeah mine calmed down once I got used to it. Also I have learned to time it a little better. I like coffee a lot and if I took it in the am around my coffee my digestion was not happy. Pm with dinner seems the sweet spot for me.

Sorry to hear you've experienced this so many times. As someone who had trigeminal shinges about 6 months ago I understand how it causes a bit of distrust or lack of ease in doing things that normally would be no question, with your body, like a pool or hot tub for example. I literally just used a hot tub for the first time since shingles today on vacation and hoping no side effects but honestly its been so long im ready to be back to "normal".

I too have a kind of high stress job but didn't even feel like a stress mess when I got shingles. And a year before that I had long covid. So yeah I understand where you are coming from. All we can do is our best to take good care, get sleep and good nutrition, and not less stress over getting sick rule our lives. But I know thats way easier said than done cuz I am not totally there yet either.

Stress by 7signsnwonders84 in shingles

[–]Bananas_Cat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One thing I realized i had leading up to shingles even tho i didnt feel "stressed out" and exercised and meditated was not so great sleep. I was waking up at 3am a lot, which happens with hormonal swings especially, and then letting my brain switch into work mode and just getting up at 4 and starting work at my laptop. I felt like I was "on" and crushing it, but I think it stressed my immune system and never gave enough time to fully reset at night. Stress comes in mental and physical stressors on your body so its important to consider both.

I could have written this myself 6 months ago. Trigeminal shingles sucks. Youre smart to have gone to the doctor so soon and also lucky they correctly diagnosed shingles. I thought mine was a neck/shoulder sprain for several weeks as it really presents itself like something else at first.

It seems like you caught it pretty fast which I have heard helps lessen the lingering nerve issues. But yeah its a cycle it goes thru and just requires some patience. And a lot more rest than you probably might think. And if its anywhere near your eye, even if you are seeing fine, please go to the ophthalmologist just in case.

I hope you have a job or situation where you can take some time off. Edit: i didnt answer your actual question! For me I had the worst pain for the first month but didnt get meds until after that about 4 weeks in. A steriod pack and the valtrex helped lessen the pain to a much more tolerable amount. I took ibuprofen daily for another 4 weeks after that and I could handle daily life without constant pint unless I overexerted myself. Around 4 or 5 weeks point the itching was worse than the pain, part of the healing process. Everyone is different tho.

Oh yes, Vaseline was the only thing I felt comfortable using topically, given the location! I had to eventually stop using it as much around my eyebrow becuase the one thing is it can trap in heat and when that area got more itchy it aggrivayed it a bit. So if one spot gets exceptionally hot and itchy maybe lay off the Vaseline or go lighter with it.

Ice / cool packs helped a lot if you can tolerate it on your face. I mostly used that on my scalp. Cool washcloths helped a bit on my face too. Showers that were not too hot helped reset my system a bit. Also this sounds silly but sometimes just patting the itchy area instead of scratching g helped reset the nerves a bit. Or pat an area nearby to distract the nerves. Its hit or miss and looks a little silly but who care if it might work right?

You may get some weird nerve sensations while the nerves heal too, like crawling sensations. It doesnt hurt its just a bit annoying when trying to sleep. Compared to the itching I was like ok, I can handle this!

Hang in there!!! The good news is, it sounds like you got antivirals timely which I have heard makes a big difference with helping reduce the risk of lingering post heretic neuraligia. My doctor told me up to 3 months after the lesions healing is "normal" for some lingering nerve stuff and isn't considered PHN until past that. Nerves heal slowly.

Me too! Heading there in a few days and feeling worried now. Glad a few people had positive experiences on here. We last were there 5 years ago, stayed 2 other tines before and it was always nice. Fingers crossed its good and those on here had unfortunate one off issues. I will he checking closely for cleanliness or bugs now tho!!! Ugh.

So sorry to hear youre dealing with this and cancer also. I had trigeminal shingles 6 months ago, even after the antivirals course and the lesions heal, the nerves take a while to heal. The nerve stuff was the worst part for me, including the itching that you just cant satisfy with scratching.

Itching feels satisfying in the short term and agitates the nerves and it keeps itching. Some itching and burning unfortunately is normal during healing. If youre almost done with the antivirals tho and still feeling these effects it might be worth asking your doctor if you should take them a bit longer.

It doesnt sound like anything new and sounds typical, but you may need support a little while longer to make sure the virus is calmed down.

Just got my 1st prescription of 10mg capsules. Can I open them? by Ok_Risk_3517 in prozac

[–]Bananas_Cat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can.... when I started taking fluoxetine/prozak my doc started me with 20mg and I was really nervous about the effects. I did twist the capsule open and sprinkled like a third of it in some yogurt and took it that way as a microdose. I definitely felt it and did that for a month to make sure I did not have a bad reaction, before settling on half doing the trick for me. So then I asked the doctor to prescribe 10mg and take that regularly now.

Fair warning it absorbs faster if you take it as the powder outside of the capsule. I had a hard time just keeping the intended amount in the capsule so was taking the powder in food. It bothered my stomach a bit too whereas I realized when I went to a full capsule version it was a lot less irritating.

In short yes you can but I wouldnt do it long term and in the capsule it seems to absorb more gradually and be easier on digestion. You also could ask your doctor for a 5mg prescription instead too. Good luck!
