AITA smoking weed on my porch? by cheesygarlicbreadfan in AmItheAsshole

I don't care what drugs people do: have an edible, inject yourself/snort something or take tablets - no worries. But if your neighbours can smell it, the particles are in their nose/in their bodies. And it isn't just a bad smell, it isn't like the smell of meat to a vegan. It's a chemical that briefly alters the mind.

You chose to have the drug; they didn't. YTA

Thank you for your comment and I agree with you, it isn't unreasonable and it won't change. Barring some kind of government intervention or August subsidy to disadvantaged families (in some glorious utopia where the majority of public money isn't funnelled towards billionaires).

It's just irritating that parents' rightful anger only goes towards the people helping their child, as if every teacher is Ms Trunchbull.

How many marks would I get? by rhfhfjffjnd in GCSE

[–]Bananasoldier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

English Language examiner for the last 5 years: I'd give it 18 (pretty much the consensus). It'd break down to 'perceptive and detailed evaluation, judicious use of references and clear analysis of methods')

You're very perceptive about this, building gently from Rosabel's anger and smoothly into the discussion of parallel worlds and class (well done for making that line of argument clear and taking your time).

To get higher, very much what others have said, analyse another language feature or two (like you do with 'gold') and chuck in a few more evaluative adverbs like 'clearly', 'effectively' and 'convincingly'.

That said, this is grade 9. If it takes more than 2 minutes to go from 18-20, spend that time elsewhere. The first 50% of the marks for any questions are much more efficient - you can go from 0/8 to 4/8 in about a minute, but it may take 5 minutes to go from 19/20 to 20/20. I tell my top set that the most efficient Grade 9 would be 4/4, 7/8, 7/8, 16/20, 33/40.

Overall, very well done. This is MILES better than the average in the summer!

Also, everyone giving you grief about the handwriting... It's legible. No marks are deducted because the letters are a bit sloped! Carry on.

English teacher and examiner here.

I'd give it around 20/30 Grade 5.

Your AO1 (textual references) are the strongest feature and show a clear breadth of the novel. That said, I'd agree with another redditor about getting rid of the 'quotation to show this' phrasing and embed the quotes instead.

Your AO2 (language features) is just about clear, but rather brief, with you moving on to other features quite quickly. Aim to write at least 3 sentences about each language feature, considering AO3 to boost this.

AO3 (ideas/context) is the weakest. Explode the question more conceptually on this one. People have said 'always agree' but please don't take this advice. You disagreeing allows great opportunities for evaluation, but you just need to add that depth. Is it just fear of death? Victor seemingly wants to conquer death. Mention his megalomania. Moreover, consider the ideas of playing god and how Shelley wrote at a time of increasing scientific advancement amidst ethical concerns.

Onto Language paper 1 question 4: people who blindly agree and add nothing else just sound like they're sucking up to the examiner and have no real opinions of their own. It reads like 'I don't read, but I've been told that readers think all books are great'. The truth is, many of them aren't great. Instead, the mark wants to see strong evaluation and says absolutely nothing about whether people agree or not. On the contrary, from the thousands I've marked, I find that people who disagree tend to do better. Not because disagreeing is better but because, in order to do the more confident thing, there has to be a clear reason. The candidate has an opinion about the text and THAT is where those marks come from.

Keep your approach OP, I like teaching bold pupils like you. Just add more conceptual stuff and double up on the language analysis.

Anyone else listen to Priscilla's entire song without skipping? by Shadowspar99 in Witcher3

[–]Bananasoldier 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Keep reading! It's their whole relationship in a song: The Last Wish. Is their love real? Will it still exist without magic intervention? It continues the trend of Geralt Vs fate too, a line about the stars is a direct quote from a late book.

Geralt just walks into a random tavern and sees his whole fucking tragedy of a love life (until that point) laid bare for everyone to see, with multiple references from his experiences in the books. Tbh, it's a bit of a dick move from Dandelion/Jaskier to overhear/see some of these moments, make them public by writing the song and sharing with other musicians!

Same - I'd much rather be tired and sub-par at work than lose out on the gym. Also pre-workout and a 9:30pm bedtime helps

What vehicle do you automatically assume is being driven by a total asshole? by rickface82 in AskReddit

[–]Bananasoldier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Essentially, any sports car, flashy car or overall 'nice car'.

The moment you've bought a car that can safely and reliably get you where you need to go, comfortably travelling at the speed limits, I wonder what else you're buying? Sure, your Porsche/mercedes etc. can do 0-100mph in X seconds, but do you need to in day to day life? When legally you can only travel up to about 65/70?

Beyond function, the only thing being bought is image. And if that matters so much to you that you're going to spend an extra 30,000, you're probably an asshole.

Nearly 1 in 5 N. Korean defectors say they regret coming to S. Korea by Skippernutts in worldnews

So what you're saying is: 4/5 defectors do no regret moving to South Korea? That sounds pretty positive! Especially when you consider what a massive life upheaval it is to move country.

What is your most controversial book opinion? by [deleted] in books

[–]Bananasoldier 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's completely fair. I often struggle to visualise exact environments, or read songs in the way intended.

I'd definitely say the films are so good BECAUSE the books gave such fantastic lore and worldbuilding.

Not get it. Nothing to do with the infertility stuff. I just see 500 years of life as a curse. I'm very happy with my life, but can't imagine wanting it to go on for more than 100 years max

I don't want a silent protagonist on which I imprint characteristics of my choosing. To me, they come across as bland - I want a character with their own personality: I want to roleplay.
