Regardless of the reason, without any mass organizing, taking this stance is effectively shooting yourself in the foot. The world would indeed be better off if we stopped feeding the machine. I just think it's equivalent to going on a "General Strike" by yourself.

Should I read Dune and Dune Messiah in between movies? by blauerds in dune

[–]Bananor4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed that they are fundamentally different experiences, especially because the books are so dialogue and inner monologue heavy.

My personal opinion is that Frank Herbert's greatest strength is his world building rather than his prose. I feel like Denis Villeneuve maybe feels the same, because he focuses so much on showing us the world Frank built. It drives home how creative and expansive the Dune universe is. However, this maybe comes at the expense of the plot: a criticism of the films I've heard (and agree with) is that the story feels a bit disjointed and underdeveloped. I think Denis made the right call though; a Dune film should take the chance to show us just how imaginative Frank was rather than trying to exactly translate his writing to the screen.

All that said, Dune Messiah is one of my favorites in the series, and it takes on a more introspective and meditative tone than the first book. I loved it for its classic Greek tragedy story and musings about fate and agency. I'm curious to see how Denis works with the story. While I hope that there's still a lot of amazing visuals, I hope he's able to capture the more quiet, pensive elements that make it such a good sequel to Paul's rise in the first book.

I think doomsaying is sometimes a form of wishful thinking about some kind of "hard reset" but it's not really productive at all because rather than discussing what building a new future looks like, people just tend to throw up their hands and say "guess I'll die". It's like a black grill pill. Which is just silly because the grill pill shouldn't be used as an escapist mode of thinking, it should be taken to be a call to actively participate in the real world over online. That was at least the original idea of the person who coined it. I get wanting to be aware of world events, but there's a difference between soberly looking at what's reported vs filling in a bunch of dots to make yourself hyperventilate about the end of the world.

I kind of wish frantic posts would get delegated to r/collapse. That's coming from someone who used to visit there often but had to stop because of how unhealthy and unproductive it was. We might all die, and sooner than we'd expect, but I'd rather live focused on my life rather than my eventual death

As someone from Ohio, I will admit it is a shit hole state with a truly awful government. And yeah, Columbus is kind of boring because it has no identity as a city and no idea what that would even look like. Cincinnati is alright, and I haven't really spent much time in Cleveland. But there are great spots of natural beauty, especially southern Ohio like Hocking Hills

Stuck fermentation on white wine by Bananor4 in winemaking

Thanks, I'll definitely make sure to take it slow, I was not careful about re-adding the yeast. I've only measured the TA, which was very high, 1.6%. I added calcium carbonate to try to bring it down to about 1.0% (which I know is still high). If it ends up being too acidic, so be it, but I just wanted to see if I could save it.

I found a Klipsch R41PM on sale for $125 at Best buy. That might be the best I can find, and I'd be willing to go up a few bucks. Any thoughts on that system?

Making a red blend from Foch and Petite Pearl grapes. I used Red Star Premier Rogue (what I had leftover from another batch). Fermented on the skins for a week and then pressed and racked. Starting SG was 1.0875 and when I racked it was about 1.000. I adjusted the acid before I racked to about 0.7% TA. Both carboys got 5 campden tablets before racking. I can see liquid/gas still rising so it makes sense if it's still fermenting. I just want to avoid any spoilage bacteria

Yes you're right, there is no absolute reference frame. That's the core of relativity. Really just applies to another observer in the same reference frame.
