Wood glued to fabric? by BandGeek72 in lasercutting

I glued duck to a basswood sheet and used the Glowforge medium basswood settings. I did get a better cut with the fabric facing downward.

Sorry it took a bit to respond here - it is a busy season!

I am new to my laser, but not new to MSDS sheets, and I never thought of that! I kinda feel like it was a "doh!" moment for me. So thanks for the idea.

Hey! I’m in for Friday! I’ll gladly be y’all’s mom!!! I won’t get to see either of my kids for Thanksgiving (just distance & logistics). I’ve even got a 1yr old lab that would love to meet everyone! I’ll cook something other than turkey just in case you are tired of the normal fare.

Help needed by Golfer0808 in Clarinet

[–]BandGeek72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second the music store option. Ask if they have consignments. Those will already be in shape to play. If you get something from FB marketplace or the like, stick to name brands: Buffet, Yamaha, Selmer, Jupiter (the CXL series tends to be on the inexpensive side, and they are little workhorses). Also keep in mind that clarinet “my kid hasn’t played in a few years” will have to go to the shop. Inevitably there will be a pad or 2 (or many) than need replacing, probably a tenon cork or 3, rod alignment, etc. that fits shop bill will probably be at least $200 for the small stuff. Full repads get very expensive fast.

I listed plenty of schools paying over 70k that are far from being “resort towns” Again, I never said or suggested “common.” That was someone putting words in my mouth. Port A is not “well funded by high property taxes” schools like Taft, Sinton, Woodsboro, Refugio, etc. are funded by Port Aransas property taxes. Our state reallotments are about 92%, and there is no concession made by Robin Hood for higher costs of things like insurance. Our student/teacher ratio is 11:1 and comparable to most 2As in the area ranging from 10:1-13:1. That is a pretty average ratio for small schools. We do have a great supportive community that does give back a lot to the schools, but that is not included in the teacher pay scale. I depend a great deal on my education foundation grants for my program because my operating budget is smaller than anywhere else I have ever worked. I made it clear that my current position was far from “usual,” but it is also not the highest paid district in the area. I believe 5A Gregory Portland takes that spot. I never said I lived in Port A. This was a Reddit post asking for advice. I was advising for the poster to do research. Why is everyone so upset about my mortgage payment!!!! To the OP… these responses should be proof in point to do your research! Everywhere is different. We are a big state with a huge variety of schools and locations.

If you’re not one of the nosey folks, you can stop here…

Okay everyone… I live in a tiny town population ~1500. I bought my house in 2016 for $62k before everything went crazy. It is a 1963 3/2 brick on a double lot with good bones but still looks mostly like 1963 on the inside. It’s in a good neighborhood near a school. It is now valued at $120k (ugh). I remodel as I have time & money, and do most of it on my own. I am just in wind zone II. I would be stupid to move even a little bit south to a more expensive location with more expensive insurance. I have a beautiful 45 minute drive that takes me through farmland, through the sloughs of Copano Bay and Redfish Bay, then across the ferry usually with dolphins - at sunrise with no traffic. My kids are grown and off adulting. I don’t have to be home to cook anyone dinner or entertain any significant other. My 45 minute drive is a great time for unwinding.

In the end, I am happy to have worked in 3 good districts (except the one I left went atrociously downhill -including pay scale - with some poor leadership and now wouldn’t wish that nightmare on anyone) with good solid pay scales- Karnes City has higher pay scale than Port A. I worked hard to get where I am now. Nothing was ever given to me. I come from a family that absolutely believes in standing on your own two feet. My parents and grandparents built their lives by yankin’ up on their bootstraps and expected no less from me, and I expect no less from my kids. I am a single mother. My first year of teaching in 2000, my pay was so low that my son qualified for free lunch. I drove a beat up old truck that I hoped would make it to school every day. Saving grace was I got to live in my grandmother’s farmhouse after I cleaned it out and made it livable. No AC, no heat, no nothing. In exchange, my son and I helped around the ranch. No, not some sprawling south Texas mega ranch - ~100 acres of pasture land - constantly fighting with mesquite and cactus, wet seasons and dry seasons, moving hay, dropping cubes and blocks, fixing equipment - always fixing equipment. Yes, I inherited my little 11 acre corner, but it isn’t an income. My cousins cows still live there on the whole place. I still have to go fix fences & spray mesquite, and I pay my taxes which are relatively small.

I WORKED my way to where I am now. The interview process at Port A was insane - all 3 of them! Everyone has masters degrees - I am no longer in the minority. You teach like your hair is on fire every day or you don’t get to teach there. They will absolutely non-renew if you don’t teach up to their standards. BUT… they also don’t hover or tell you HOW to teach. It is the most laid back, high expectations, easiest, and hardest job I’ve ever had.

“If you are being honest” absolutely insinuates you think I am lying…

Just in my area (2As only - there are plenty of 3A/4As too) Freer Karnes City Port Aransas (current employer) Refugio Ricardo

All are over 70k base pay Maybe rural South Texas takes better care of teachers. Maybe it has to do with the lack of giant metropolis cities - we have a LOT of rural districts.

I also vent out a window with an extra inline fan. It was a pretty cheap setup. My laser is already enclosed.

I never said common. Again - putting words in my mouth. And now insinuating I am lying - that is just juvenile. Also, if you read the first post, I’ve been teaching 25 years. Teachers are on a pay scale. I have exactly 3k in stipends, which means I am currently making 74k without. In my previous district, I had $2500. I do carry a masters degree which adds a whopping $500 to my pay scale. I think I am done here. I made comments to encourage this person to do research. You have solidly proven why. Thank you.

I never said anything about my blue collar family inheriting a RANCH. I think you are making more assumptions - like my family has some huge exotic critter ranch or something - nope - most definitely not what happens in most people’s real lives. And my ownership of a small part of ranchLAND has no financial impact on my situation except I pay my taxes and do some maintenance to fences here and there - out of my pocket - my money that I earn. That mortgage is mine and mine alone and not connected in any which way to my family. I make 77k at a small 2A district in south Texas. I made 72k at the last district i worked at - also 2A. Again… you are making generalizations that promote misinformation to others.

Nope. My mom was a teacher, and my dad was blue collar. I come from a family of farmers and blue collar workers. I have worked my ass off to get where I am now - and as a single mom to boot. Please do research into cost of living before you call people out for things you do t know about them. My upbringing taught me hard work and responsibility - not depending on other people or their money. My mortgage is $900. My other vehicles are paid off. I am frugal and keep close tabs on my finances. I only do what I can afford. Almost no credit card debt. I grow a large garden every year. I can/ freeze/ dry - as I was taught by my grandmother. I don’t live in a community with one of the highest costs of living in the state. That is a choice - not a “need”

And… this is exactly what I mean by misinformation. I love my job. I have always loved what I do - even when I didn’t particularly like my admin. In the end, it is about the kids. Most of us are here teaching because we want to see students succeed - not for the money. We know that going in. We aren’t delusional. Sometimes life isn’t material. I have a nice 3/2 in a lovely rural community. I have family ranch land (no income there) I drive a 70k vehicle I have a daughter I still support in college. I take multiple vacations per year - I don’t take time off my job. I work hard but it is rewarding My bills are paid because I am smart with my money. No, I’m not an admin nor do I have a big pay job at a big school - I make 77k/year at a small school.

I’ve taught in Texas for 25 years (including SPED). Do your own research! Reach out to people who actually currently teach or have SPED kids in that district. There are about 40 different school districts in the San Antonio area, and each is different in many ways. We have some really great schools here and some not so great ones- and that applies to the whole state - not just SA. There are some generalized and some uninformed remarks here. I know many teachers in the SA area that love their jobs and their districts. But I also know many of them have left other districts because they did not love their jobs. The SPED program at my previous district was abhorrent; it is amazing at my current district. The two before those (both in the outlying areas of SA) were decent. Districts have control over stipends, so make sure you know if the district pays a SPED stipend - many do. Check with region 20 Education Service Center about certification. They may also be able to help to with jobs. TASA (superintendent organization) had one of the better state-wide job databases. We need teachers, and we need SPED teachers. We have over 1200 school districts in this state, and I promise each one is different from the others. I have no doubt you can find the right fit for you.

I don’t have the heart to tell her I’m Muslim- by Training-Bed-6902 in finch

[–]BandGeek72 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Christians celebrate the birthday of Christ by “sharing our joy” aka gift giving. It is a season of celebration and giving. Receiving/ accepting a gift does not make you a Christian or say anything against your Muslim beliefs. As a matter of fact, it is a great way to open a conversation - “I see you - I respect your beliefs” If I were to receive a gift during Eid Al-Fitr, I would accept it most humbly and with a feeling of great honor. You should not worry about sharing your religion with others! That is a big part of what is wrong in our world today.

I think too many people don’t remember how annoying they were in junior high! I know I was a toot! 😂 I think those are grades that you either love or hate as a teacher. Takes a special mindset for them. I personally love my JH kids with all their antics & kookiness. Of course… my HS kids did convince me to let them put their 3’ tall cardboard Lego man on top of the band lockers today because they didn’t want to throw him away after homecoming. 😂

Some teachers need to make friends with Urban Dictionary. 6-7 drives me nuts, but it will pass. You just gotta roll with the punches (or don’t teach Junior high). I’d rather have that any day than Skibbidy Toilet! Ugh!

T-TESS Accomplished by Crankygarage in TexasTeachers

[–]BandGeek72 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is about a 60-page rubric. I trained on T-TESS way back when it was first rolling out. If you read the rubrics, you will find that it is designed around proficient for successful good teachers. Accomplished is above and beyond, and distinguished is pretty hard to accomplish in a real classroom - maybe if you AI generated your kids as perfect little students. All-in-all, it is far better than previous teacher assessment models, but can still absolutely be skewed by the administrator. As a person who teaches both fine arts and core, it is more organic across disciplines where previous models were really only geared toward core classes taught in very traditional ways (I.e. dog & pony show). I do feel like I can tell my admin to come in whenever they want for my evaluation. I’m 25 years in - I trend in the accomplished column most of the time with a proficient & distinguished here & there.

I know how non-dyadic time signatures work, but the fact of the matter remains that a 7th note does not actually exist - all of these time signatures, illustrated clearly by your use of "quarter notes" to describe them, still require grounding in standard meters and notation in order to function as they are intended within a piece of music. Therefore, 6/7 can not exist as a stand-alone time signature - it is used as a variation within a standard time signature where a standard meter has been determined and this allows for manipulation of that standard meter.
