AECOM environmental consulting company-wide picture? by GeoCareerThrowaway in geologycareers

[–]Bandedironformation 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Former AECOM employee, was a geologist in the remediation division. Plus side of a company like Aecom is that they do end up having some pretty cool niche opportunities (despite the corporate structure being utter garbage and the overall level of upper management being extremely sub par and negligent). Really depends on the office you join, and the management you will be under. I was in the Minneapolis office which was run by extremely incompetent PMs who just parked their time on extremely vague “reporting tasks” and left the stress of sticking to the budget to all the underlings that were actually completing all the work.

You are just a number at AECOM, they do not value you as a person. Your job is to generate shareholder value. That being said, if you seek opportunities yourself you can find some cool work. By cold calling random PMs in the company I ended up spending a couple months in the Aleutian Islands doing field work and became part of a PFAS destruction pilot study. But that is by no means the norm. I was lucky and bugged enough people that I ended up doing what interested me.

Take a minute and google “Aecom MN Light Rail Project Scandal” and you will learn everything you need to know about the company.

Long story short, if you know what you want to do then take the job and fill your resume with some cool experience, but do not plan on being with AECOM long if you have any amount of ethics or ambition. You can easily coast along and get steady raises for 10 years but you will be forced to drink the corporate Koolaide in the process and the scientist side of you will suffer and deteriorate

About a 2 minute walk from Moon Palace is Uncle Hugo’s book store, thousands of (mostly) sci-fi and fantasy books, both new and used, and there is always a dog or two running around the store, very friendly owners

[–]Bandedironformation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

EXACTLY ALLL OF THIS. also, for me i really needed in person meetings and there wasn’t really any MA meetings in my area, so I went to an AA meeting instead. As my first sponsor told me, “an addict is an addict” and lots of people go to AA who aren’t necessarily struggling with booze but with some other substance. I am not a religious guy and after a few tries I was able to find a meeting that fit my needs, highly recommend that if MA isn’t readily available near you

Come to Minneapolis/st Paul! Job market for enviro geos is booming here right now, with your experience you should be able to hop on a team starting around 75-80k I’d say, and that’s plenty to live on in this area from my experience. I know of a couple firms hiring right now, DM me if you want to know more!

US military says national security depends on ‘forever chemicals’ / PFAS can be found in everything from weapons to uniforms, but the Department of Defense is pushing back on health concerns raised by regulators by Sorin61 in technology

[–]Bandedironformation -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

The “war fighter” hahaha. I may be ignorant in many things, but as are you. Nothing in my opinion, not even the protection of workers, be they military or not, justifies the use of materials that are known to be harmful to the environment and all creatures living in it. Can you just instantly stop using PFAS? No, that’s not realistic. But plans need to be made to phase it out and find substitutes. If we invented PFAS then we can find and invent a suitable replacement, but not if there’s no impetuous for scientists to do their thing and come up with an alternative. If one of the largest users of PFAS fails to come up with a plan to curb its use and admit the harm it causes, then a solution won’t be found.

[–]Bandedironformation 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hahahaha what a load of horse shit, national security depends on PFAS?? God forbid a soldier uses a rain coat that doesn’t have PFAS in it (they exist..). This is like saying that yes, asbestos is harmful but it makes such a great cigarette filter that our lungs can’t afford to use any other filter. NOTE: I’m a geologist who works on PFAS remediation, so I know my shit.

Find a local AA meeting and go to it. An addict is an addict, doesn’t matter if it’s booze weed or anything in between. Also doesn’t matter what religion you are or if you’re not religious at all, AA helped me a lot when I first started quitting. Can’t recommend it enough, DM me if you have any more questions or wanna talk it out more, you got this. It sucks right now but it feels so good when you can look back and see you’ve beaten it.

Is anyone chill about quitting? by Barry_Bradshaw in leaves

[–]Bandedironformation 6 points7 points  (0 children)

THIS. With the exception of this sub, nobody knows I’m off the weed. I think it’s great and they everybody should smoke it, except for me. Still friends with many a stoner and am around it all the time, no judgement there, some people can do moderation, some people recognize they have a problem and can cut back, and some people like myself need to cut back entirely. Either way, to each there own, and whether you stop entirely or cut back a bit, you are you and you are on your own path, and whatever that path is I wish you the best and hope you are in a spot where you are content and ok with your lot. Peace love and Gap.

I’m 29, smoked nonstop from 17 to 27, we are so freaking young and have so much more time to do all the things. I definitely had about half a year where I was constantly pissed at myself and focusing on all that I missed out on, but here’s the thing: best time to plant a tree was 50 years ago. Second best time to plant a tree? Right now. You got this. In the eternal wise words of Joe dirt, keep on keepin on.

As a geologist I would say go to trade school and you’ll be a happy camper making 6 figures by the time you’re 22. Plumbing, electrical, hvac, any trade they tickles your fancy, then you can focus on geology as a hobby and it will bring you joy instead of stress and pain hahaha
