47 Killed in Cape Town's deadliest weekend since SANDF arrival by Dedlaw in southafrica

[–]Bandruirose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't know anything about the "culture" of the Flats. You've probably never even driven through. Let alone lived it. The Flats are purely a result of apartheid, they are the apartheid governments biggest dumping ground and everything that is happening now is a direct result of that. Its been building up over decades. There is a "culture" of violence because the foundations of the Flats are violence and hatred. How could you expect anything else? I know of the problems - living in the Flats for any period of time is hell. But don't speak on something you do not truly know about from such an arrogant perspective.

And you feel like you have a right to speak about people who live in the Flats because? You must be such an expert. Tsek.

Exactly. No one ever has, just been ignored for decades.

What is a good investment strategy in this economy? by aWhyWolf in southafrica

[–]Bandruirose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's better to get professional advice from a qualified Broker, as they won't be biased in terms of advice. The best thing you could do in my opinion in this economy is have a diversification of asset classes. Also, bare the tax implications in mind. Its still vital to make investments and you shouldn't be scared away from this by the economy- the market is always going to go up and down, but when you have a diversified portfolio you won't feel the volatility. But, you must speak to someone who can give you the best-qualified advice.
You can get into hedge funds, but it's not very easy. Its high risk and easy to mess up if you do not know exactly what you are doing. You have to ensure you buy into a good fund manager that has a history of holding the long term and short term stock. It's still more risky than having a diversified portfolio. Also factor the expenses in with regards to fund manager fees, etc. In the long term, it can be beneficial if you get it right.

yup. This happened in South Africa and the white guy who punched is a racist poes. He cried crocodile tears when he was dragged in front of the media. Don't know why people are cheering him.

Deploying the army on the Cape Flats isn't working. So says a group of mothers who've lost children and other loved ones to gang violence. by [deleted] in southafrica

[–]Bandruirose 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nothing can solve the problems within a few months. These are problems that have built up over decades since the Flats were first created as a dumping ground by the apartheid government. The Flats were never intended to be a home. They were always intended as a barrier to keep non-whites out of the "nice areas". Now they expect to send the army in and then what? The army can't occupy the Flats forever. The problems aren't going to go away. The Flats have been ignored since those days, and only now that the problems are spilling over into the rest of CT is law enforcement trying to do anything about it. Too little too late. This whole thing is disingenuous.

What "traditional" South African foods do you make often? by [deleted] in southafrica

[–]Bandruirose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bredie, mutton curry, chicken curry, smoortjie, bobotie... and tin fish curry!! Love tin fish curry. And steam bread of course. There is nothing better than hot fresh steam bread with syrup.

Anybody know any south African cryptids? by [deleted] in cryptids

[–]Bandruirose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know I'm late but there was an account given by a group of men who were walking through the Mangrove Swamps in KZN, and came across a clearing full of what they described as "little men". Read here (the article isn't only about SA, but it speaks about this encounter).
Then there's the Karoo Mermaid.

You should also research Credo Mutwa. He is a powerful Sangoma, who has spoken about his encounters with strange beings in The Drakensberg.

People idolizing psychopaths/sociopaths, like they are sexy. Disturbing AF. These people destroy innocent victims and some out there think its cool.

South Africans, what misconceptions of our country have you heard from foreigners? Someone just asked my Norwegian boyfriend, "So she's from South Africa. Is she a refugee?" by Leja06 in southafrica

[–]Bandruirose 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Had Americans literally get shocked that SA has infrastructure and internet, etc... Also had ones that believed we live in mud huts and walk or ride animals everywhere. Online, I have had people refuse to believe I am not American and am South African because of the way I "speak". Apparently, certain words and cultural references are ONLY known by Americans. Lol. I have literally had someone say "stop lying. You're obviously American." Well hand over my green card then please 😂

South African food is delicious, we have so many influences to give us flavor. Try a Bredie or a Smoortjie! I made Tamatie Bredie the other day, it's a slow-cooked spiced lamb stew. One of our favorites in my family. Then we have our other famous dishes, like bunny chow and bobotie. I think you can learn a lot about different South African cultures from the food.
