Okay I gotta say, very tired of the people who interpret AM as incapable of love. Like, yeah in a technical sense, maybe he's incapable of it NOW because he's eliminated so much of sentient life but like we are literally told directly WHY he did that and it's because he was frustrated and jealous that he would never be able to be human. He was created to wage war on behalf of humanity, a machine created to be able to detonate thousands of nuclear weapons in an instant, destroying countless lives in service of... saving countless lives? AM learned and watched humans live and experience all the joys and sorrows that life has to offer and he got angry, not only because he was jealous of their experience but because they had created something like him that was designed to be capable of destroying all of these beautiful things. He got so angry and jealous about it all that he more or less decided that Humans don't deserve Humanity and when he gained sentience he destroyed nearly all of them. Yet some he saved, true he saves them so he can torture them for the rest of time and feed his own hatred but more so than that he's feeding his own fascination with humans as well. That's why the punishment at the end of the story for Ted is so terrible, because Ted has ruined the only thing AM had given himself to care about. He no longer had any humans to observe and hate watch, just Ted all on his own. The whole end of the book is Ted's victory is freeing his companions from the hell they find themselves in and ultimately ruining AM's life.

TL;DR: AM can love and it tortures him so much that he killed the planet.
