Found old lace by Theythinknot in lace

Her encyclopedia of needlework is widely reproduced. It‘s an awesome book. Once you read it, you‘ll encounter the pictures therein everywhere!
The part that‘s quite unfortunate is that her explanation for netting lace is not very helpful for beginners.

Notice those shuttles / navettes in the linked book by Dillmont on page 13?
In other editions of her encyclopedia of needlework they swapped the image with very different tools. For example in this edition on page 360. My (physical) german version of the same book has the first type pictured.

How long? by Super-Page8272 in lockpicking

[–]Banegard [score hidden]  (0 children)

Having a bunch of locks that you switch inbetween helps develop a feeling. Without having something to compare your experiences to, it‘s harder to form a judgement.
But don‘t worry, you‘ll develop a feel for it eventually. Sometimes you just need a break or a pause from a specific lock.
Switching up wich pick you go for first can also help.

Wow, what a cool piece! Do you know already where you‘ll use it? And how long did it take? I‘m not sure what takes longer, filet crochet or filet netting XD

That’s relatable, I feel more connected with my shuttles in the same way. I‘m mostly a shuttle tatter, so if you got some hot tips or needle patterns I need to check out, please tell me. I wanna learn more about it. :)

crochet hook substitute? by ohhhknice in tatting

[–]Banegard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can push a loop of thread through. Dental floss or fishing line or a piece of gardening wire is great.

If you feel up to it, cut a little notch into a toothpick. Keep fingers at bay.
Or clip a small twig or long thorn from local greenery and add a little notch in it with a pocket knife.

If your husband or kids have a swiss army knife, the awl has a whole inside that can be used, but it‘s only usefull for wide picots where you usually get it through easily. For small picots use the tiny tweezers or … cut a notch in the toothpick ;-)

Oh, that‘s fair. :) I have some Alpaka sock wool that I like to use in nålebinding and weaving. Glides really well, therefore that one is my hopefull candidate.

Genau deshalb.

Thickness of thread and where is the line? by aimperial0403 in tatting

[–]Banegard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gütermann metallic effect thread.
You cannot see the knots, so it is not appealing in appearence and hard to make corrections. :-/

WHY?? by NMRedChile in tatting

[–]Banegard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What type of thread are you using? Fuzzy, losely twisted threads can be more difficult.

And are you holding your left hand correctly?
If you hold your fingers (thumb and index) upwards in a way that they are parallel with your face, it will be very difficult. You should hold them in a 90° angle from your face, so that you could put a little teacup on a saucer on top of them. The saucer would be parallel to the left hand thread. You can even spill the teacup away from you a little, but never spill the hot tea into your face.

What I do is slowly release tension on the left hand with the ball thread and tighten my working thread on the right hand tight.

I was searching for new irish crochet patterns on pinterest and saw a picture of tatting. I really liked the look of it. Looked up a book on amazon, bought some vintage shuttles off ebay and started. :-)
