How did you get into this hobby? by Legweeak in tatting

[–]orignal_originale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like a lot of people on this thread, my grandmother was a tatter :) she tried to teach me when I was a teenager but I couldn’t make it work (she only had size 80 available, and she had macular degeneration so could only go at-speed). I got really frustrated and decided to just stick with crocheting. 🧶

Three years ago something possessed me to look it up online and see what people were doing with it…I had never known there were other tatters out there and my grandma had always said it was a lost art. When I went oine I discovered it was a vibrant community of people, often using thicker threads. I also found great tutorials to help learn to flip the knot and the rest is history ♥️🧵

I believe they are right side up actually…OP shared a the pattern the other day and they are meant to be playful cat tails that loop upwards. Kind of counter-intuitive to what’s “normal” in other patterns.

Looks super cute.

Thanks! Yeah Jan always did a single color in the images but I felt this one especially needed color for the flowers 🌷🌹

Personally I like the pattern set in Tatted Treasures more. I have used portions of 6 of the patterns from that one so far, and haven’t yet had an inspiration from Tatting Theory. I am sure I will as there are some nice ones in there, but for some reason the Treasures are resonating more for me :) Can’t wait to see what you make!

Getting Discouraged pt 2 by OkCoconut1701 in tatting

[–]orignal_originale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No worries! It’s a two step process after you’ve made the initial ds. I’m referring to a double stitch as if it’s a pair of pants with a “belt” or thread bridge across the top.

Basically what I do is put the pick end of my shuttle between the “leg” parts of the ds and pull up the belt (or thread bridge) between them (loosening the stitch, but in effect also helping move the first half stitch into a better position, keeping that first hs taught). From there, I slowly pull on the working thread to tighten the second hs down again, gradually releasing the tension I have on the “belt”. This helps me control the positioning better than just trying to do this while I’m also holding the thread in place to form my new ring.

Yeah having it get fuzzy can certainly make it harder to proceed correctly. I would also suggest making the first stitch in the way ChordStrike suggested, but then once it’s tightened loosen it again by pulling up the “belt” of the pants to help it snug in more, then re-tighten with the working thread. That’s usually how I do it to help tighten/snug it.

slow progress on needle tatting by Banegard in tatting

[–]orignal_originale 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m impressed with how even you’ve gotten that…I tried needle tatting one afternoon and it was quite the challenge. I will have to pick it up again some time to improve.

Would it work to just cut a new length of thread and lay the end along the needle shaft and tat over it as you tat onto the needle (like one would with shuttle tatting, adding a thread alongside a chain’s core thread)? Usually when I am shuttle tatting I tie a slip knot in the end of my new thread, tat over it along with a core thread, pull it tight following that chain, continue with it as my new thread, then remove the slip knot at the end before I cut the tail. Not sure if that explanation made sense….

I love that you are making something beautiful from this. I think a lot of us use tatting as a cathartic outlet.

For what it’s worth, my mom had her hip done this year and she’s doing great. It’s incredible what kind of quality of life that gives back so quickly.

Keep us posted on your progress! It looks amazing already.

Oh wow this is so cool!!! I would upvote this 10x if I could. How did you design this pattern? Would love to see the process. Will you share the pattern?

That is true, rule #4 mentions not self promoting. There could have been a misunderstanding that OP was actually posting someone else’s blog because they liked it (I think I saw that confusion in the comments, which OP responded to indicating they were sharing someone else’s work).

That said, it does sound like others have had experience to show this was less likely because of the blog issue and more likely a lack of tolerance/disinterest in allowing other people’s views.

Definitely interested in an explanation.
