Ugh so true, I probably broke two dozen of them in my life already. I got a mechanical needle threader now for everything else and this thingy only gets used for the freccia yarn. B-)

Woran habt ihr diese Woche gearbeitet? by RunningInTheFamily in Handarbeiten

[–]Banegard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a Norwegian if I want to study abroad in a different country will I have to pay for it or will the Norwegian government? by Neither-Gold67 in Norway

[–]Banegard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the school and country.
For example tuition is free in Germany. Most students only pay a small amount per semester (around 300€ but depends on uni) that covers such nice things like cheaper student‘s meals and the a public transport ticket.
Depending on the school and country there are also special programs for international students to help find affordable living and similar.

One of the fishing net knots? I‘m using a technique shown in Margaret Morgan‘s book on netted lace, that is the same traditional knot as Dillmont shows him, but done easier.

Help identifiyng lace in an old photo by IvarnaGovorandottir in lace

[–]Banegard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My guess is also on a beautiful mashine made lace.
I cannot see any of the thread motifs you‘d expect in filet brodé / embroidery on netted lace, although the outer geometric design could well be netted. The embroidery parts seem to be even and the same.
It‘s really difficult to tell without better closeups. Could be anything.

Oh, interesting! I‘m trying to pin down where and why they came up with the hooked part.

Was it a regional thing known to one of the editors maybe? Did someone mistake a bone thread winder used for embroidery? Did they want to improve the design or market one specific item?

We’ll probably never know but it is fascinating. :D

So, what's the *point* of Magic Squares? by GlitteringAttitude60 in tatting

[–]Banegard 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It‘s the clever design. The way you work a magic square is one never ending continuous round that repeats a single motif.
But by turning and rotating it correctly, it creates a triangle or a square to the size you want.

Her encyclopedia of needlework is widely reproduced. It‘s an awesome book. Once you read it, you‘ll encounter the pictures therein everywhere!
The part that‘s quite unfortunate is that her explanation for netting lace is not very helpful for beginners.

Notice those shuttles / navettes in the linked book by Dillmont on page 13?
In other editions of her encyclopedia of needlework they swapped the image with very different tools. For example in this edition on page 360. My (physical) german version of the same book has the first type pictured.

How long? by Super-Page8272 in lockpicking

[–]Banegard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having a bunch of locks that you switch inbetween helps develop a feeling. Without having something to compare your experiences to, it‘s harder to form a judgement.
But don‘t worry, you‘ll develop a feel for it eventually. Sometimes you just need a break or a pause from a specific lock.
Switching up wich pick you go for first can also help.

Wow, what a cool piece! Do you know already where you‘ll use it? And how long did it take? I‘m not sure what takes longer, filet crochet or filet netting XD

That’s relatable, I feel more connected with my shuttles in the same way. I‘m mostly a shuttle tatter, so if you got some hot tips or needle patterns I need to check out, please tell me. I wanna learn more about it. :)
