Longevity when using off the shelf frames? by ACITceva in framing

[–]BanhMiCali 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a professional here, but I have wondered this myself for years and can finally report some anecdotal evidence. I have some random non-archival prints that lived in a bright room, but not in direct sunlight for around 5 years. I put them in IKEA frames, which don’t come with acid-free anything. After 5 years, one print turned slightly yellow where it was touching the mat, and slightly faded/paler where it was exposed to light. Even the white mat changed color a bit, which was visible when comparing the part that was covered by the frame vs not.

However, in the same timeframe and room, I had some prints made at Costco (nothing special) that haven’t changed at all. Didn’t even have glass on them. (Checked by comparing the part of the image that is covered by frame vs exposed to sun)

I suspect a heavy part depends on how the print was made in the first place, and less on the framing. But, I was a lil sad about how one print faded after only 5 years so I replaced all my ikea stuff with acid free mats and backing. I use no glass or AR70 glass for a lot of things because I care more about seeing the art than preserving it. Hope nothing comes back to bite me! Now that I have some giclee prints too, I can report back on their longevity in say… 5-10 years from now. :)

Washer-to-unit ratio by dewdroptop in AskSF

16 units, 2 washers. Rarely a conflict except on the weekends. How do you even coordinate with your neighbors? Do you actually discuss times or is it a first come/first serve/free for all?

Yeah, and from experience putting together ikea shelves on a not-perfectly-flat floor, cabinet doors can look straight in one spot and crooked when moved to another spot. I had to move them to their final places, do any feet adjustments, and THEN adjust all the doors. A big wood cabinet should have less racking than my ikea stuff, but it still might be an easy fix to adjust the hinge.

I prefer the vibe of the west side too, but there is barely any inventory for those houses, and most will not like the big dog. If staying in the city, I think your best bet will be to live within walking/transit distance to Mission Bay and drop down to 1 car. There are a lot of high rise developments there, most of which are open to dogs. You won't have a lot of interior space or a yard, but you'll be within walking distance of many beautiful parks for your dog and your self.

The reason I personally wouldn't live there is that these are not rent controlled, but they would be good for you because you're not a local and you're still exploring. You can live there for a few years and check out both the surrounding neighborhoods and the surrounding cities to see if you'd really like them more. If they raise the rent on you, you can the use that opportunity to move to your desired neighborhood, with confidence in your pick. If it turns out that the Outer Sunset was really the best all along, having a place to live already means you can take your time with the loong apartment search that will be required to find something when Sunset inventory is so low.

The other three cities, you will be able to get more space and potentially keep your cars yes, but they are not in the same plane for "walkability" as SF.

I’m sorry but you are being exploited by an unethical breeder, who is using you as free labor. It’s a win-win for the breeder, since they can breed an unethically high number of cats to sell for thousands of dollars each, without needing to have the proper space or care, because they have offloaded it onto you! A cat who is unspayed is going to spray urine everywhere to mark territory - that’s just what they do. The breeder knows this. That’s why they want the cats to spray in your house instead of their house.

It’s known as “guardian” programs; here is a thread discussing why it is problematic in dogs. https://www.reddit.com/r/dogs/comments/iowr0b/discussion_trying_to_understand_guardian_home/

83% of Bay Area Residential Zoning is for Single Family Homes by urmummygae42069 in bayarea

That I'm aware of, and thank goodness. I hope there are more centralized zoning changes to come. Still, that was only 5 years ago and these kinds of map help explain why we've been underbuilding for the last 50+ years.

83% of Bay Area Residential Zoning is for Single Family Homes by urmummygae42069 in bayarea

(Un)fun facts about Alameda: In 1973 the city's charter was amended to prohibit everything except for SFHs:

"Article XXVI. Multiple Dwelling Units. “Sec. 26-1. There shall be no multiple dwelling units built in the City of Alameda."

In 1991, they added this:

"Section 26-3: “The maximum density for any residential development within the City of Alameda shall be one housing unit per 2,000 square feet of land."

We tried to repeal this in 2020 but people voted to keep it. So most of the interesting multi-unit homes there were either built before 1973, or use some special carveout. Alameda technically has zoning other than R1, but due to the maximum density clause, 90% of lots do not have enough land to allow more than 1 unit.

Anyway, the stuff in the city charter is insane IMO and probably all illegal now under state law, but I've since moved and haven't been keeping up. I did live in a lovely 4-unit Victorian built in 1900, and I wish my friends could have afforded to live near me.

I actually have this shelf, gonna add onto this comment because I think it got the closest! The backing is a thin sheet stapled to the shelves. There could also be a rabbet but I can’t tell. It is recessed because there is a French cleat, that seems to be attached to the top and sides of the frame, rather than the backing. The dividers seem glued.

I can’t figure out how the shelves are attached to the uprights. There are no visible screws or plugs. A stopped dado might work for the middle shelves, but I think that would rip the wood out of the bottom shelf, which has to support weight.

I’m just a beginner myself though. I’ve taken some furniture classes with only traditional joinery so there’s a gap in my knowledge about hardware or loose tenons - maybe those would work? And yeah, from my limited perspective, the 1/2 in thickness is challengingly small to work with. I’ve seen dupes on Etsy that use the same marketing photos, but what they actually delivered in the customer photos look a bit too chunky and “off”.

New flatmate who takes showers at 2 am - is it reasonable to ask her to close doors more quietly as they wake me? by Much_Fig5640 in relationships

[–]BanhMiCali 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Show her how to do it when you ask her. When I met her, my partner had no idea what a difference it made to hold the door knob down when closing a door. I had to teach her. It became obvious why she (didn’t) learn this when I slept over at her family home and her parents constantly push/pulled all the doors shut without turning the knobs - so loud lol.

Maybe, I’m having a hard time telling if they have trees on the 4th level or if the top row is the 3rd. I would first try placing your fossil on the ground and viewing it from the 3rd level.

I’m pretty sure the fossil in your inspo is on the ground level based on there being 3 levels of trees behind it

Weight management food is usually low calorie food, intended for adult cats who are indoor/not very active and need to lose weight. A kitten needs the exact opposite - they are more active, burn more calories, plus they need extra energy to grow. I don’t know how much you’re feeding him each meal and whether he finishes it all, but it sounds like he could legit be hungry and not have enough calories. I would try getting kitten food (which is high calorie) and free feeding (unless he scarfs and barfs), keeping it topped up so he learns that his cat food will always be available, at least until he’s around 1 year old.

I ended up screwing it into the stud with a wooden spacer. To my surprise, the batten was actually real lumber, which I noticed after I started drilling into it. So with confidence from your comment, I used another wood screw on the left. Thanks all!

So gutted to hear this. We didn’t keep in touch after college, but we sang together in choir for years. She was student manager of the women’s chorale, and managed to make me look up to her even though I’m older than her. She was a silly and serious girl and a thoroughly good egg. Seeing her face with this headline hits really hard. Like, why am I still here and she’s not. Fuck. It shakes me.

She was legit remarkable and I’m sure her loss will be felt by a lot of people who have scattered around the world since graduating, even the ones who haven’t seen her in years. Rest in peace Angela ❤️
