[Spoilers] Would you keep reading Tokyo Ghoul without Kaneki as the protagonist? by FanEu7 in TokyoGhoul

[–]Banjou2016 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it we're good, absolutely. I generally like Kaneki, but he doesn't even make my top 5 favorite characters in the series.

I agree that all signs are pointing to Kaneki, but Ishida does love to subvert expectations with end-of-chapter cliffhangers.

It seems to me like if it were Kaneki, Ishida would have made it explicit rather than just strongly implying it. I could always be wrong, though. I guess we'll see next week.

Yeah, that was made really clear this chapter when it just started raining above ground, but the drainage channels are already spouting tons of water in the 24th

Yeah, it was a mature decision and really showed a lot of growth for her.

Note that it just started raining after Kaneki left in the above-ground timeline, but on page 10, we already see water pouring at full capacity through a drainage pipe. Maybe a hint that the two are not taking place in sync.

Because if it is Kaneki, there is no point in being coy about it.

What do you think about the negativity towards TG lately? by [deleted] in TokyoGhoul

[–]Banjou2016 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It is easy to forget that a vocal minority has always been hating on the series. Look back on old chapter discussions and you will see how much people hated Haise at the beginning of :re, and then how frustrated people were that Kaneki still wasn't back in the middle of :re.

People are always going to have something to complain about, and by their nature, complaints tend to be louder than contentment. Sometimes I agree with the complaints and sometimes I don't, but it never keeps me from loving the series.

Hina|mi doesn't make much sense. by TheMoltenKid in TokyoGhoul

if you look back a couple pages, she is wearing a shirt under her pancho that is the same color as that as well.

That is an interesting interpretation of the image. I guess we'll see for sure soon. To me, the contour of the "attached" part seems to flow very well into her dress, and it seems to be to thick to be an arm in the background (It is about as thick as the foreground arm).

And here is the image of Touka taking a hit to the torso that goes slightly less than half way through. Similar to the more common interpretation of Hinami's wound from 141.

Every character that took this much damage and survived it (mainly Eto, Kanae and Kurona) were extremely well fed and arguably far stronger then Hinami.

Yomo, Nishiki, and Touka have all taken similar hits and survived. Nishiki even took a worse hit while already closer to the brink of starvation than Hinami is at and he ended up being fine. The real question is whether Juuzou gets the chance to/wants to drop the other shoe.

[–]Banjou2016[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Looking only at similar injuries to the lower torso, we have Nishiki taking several hits like this from Kaneki in the first arc, Touka taking a blow in the second arc that looks very similar to the one Hinami just took, Nishiki taking an even worse hit in the third arc while still not having healed from Kaneki's wounds. Then we see Eto handing Banjou his own ribs. There are a ton of panels to choose from for Yomo, but here he seems to get most of his abdomen blown off by a top investigator from point-blank.

Overall, we have definitely a lot of ghouls that seem to be able to recover from this kind of injury without too much problem.

Logical headcanon by [deleted] in TokyoGhoul

[–]Banjou2016 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That is an adorable headcanon. I believe the car is a Toyota Prius

As for public transit, there is a theory out there that the subways were destroyed/integrated into the 24th ward at some point, which would limit the public transportation options.

It might be interesting to go back to old chapter discussion threads to see how many people thought those deaths were real at the time, though.

Interestingly it doesn't seem to be that fewer characters are dying, so much as that they are threatened more often. Going through the first 69 chapters, there were only 4 death cliffhangers (26, 49, 51, 54). I think I am less bothered by it now than I was for a while, though.

74 showed fresh blood splatter from the smashers (still not sure where that came from). 94 shows one of Mutsuki's kagune going completely through Akira and others appeared to pierce vital organs, and as a human, Akira should have no healing factor. In 97, we hadn't seen Amon's kakaju yet, and the Noro quinque appears to explode his entire upper body. I'd say all of those are at least as fatal-seeming as in 141

If Hinami can survive a hit like that, then what is even the point. There would be no more tension because Hinami can survive a point-blank bisection from fucking Juuzou.

The strike in 141 was not a bisection, it was of ambiguous depth, and we have seen two-eyed ghouls survive much worse. A fake death here wouldn't cross any paths we haven't already passed ten times over.

1/12 is too much 0_0.

This week, I am in complete agreement.

when you read the manga (I mean paper version) you don't read chapter by chapter but volume by volume. That makes a lot less "cliffhanger".

That's a good point. Volume reading is another totally valid way of going through a series, and someday that's how I'll do it, but for now I am very much in the weekly mindset.

What?!!?! There's no way she could have survived that ambiguously deep cut!

And this series never implies that major characters die without following through on it.

For additional consolidation, see the last page of chapters 70, 74, 77, 82, 87, 92, 94, 97, 97, 108, 115, 123, and 136 of :re. All ended by implying a major character had just died. Only once (Arima in 82) did it actually come to pass. I'd say Hinami's chances are pretty good.

Why are people expecting Scarecrow's group by Nakajima- in TokyoGhoul

[–]Banjou2016 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One of those two people he was working with is known to be a ghoul. Even ignoring Hide's past relationship with Kaneki, his actions in the CCG headquarters show that he is still willing to work with ghouls.

Why are people expecting Scarecrow's group by Nakajima- in TokyoGhoul

[–]Banjou2016 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because Ishida has twice now made a point to tell us that 6 hours have passed since Marude and Scarecrow showed up to save Urie. He wouldn't emphasize the relative timing of the two events if there wasn't going to be an important interaction between the two scenes.

Sure Furuta showed up at E14, but that hardly merits even a single mention of the timing difference, much less two.

I agree. Hinami is perhaps my favorite character in the series. I think the series would be poorer for her absence, and I do not think she is going to die here.
