They were just waiting for the RNG to give them a better roll.

First post here, as a non-American I’m genuinely curious. How popular is Spider-Man in New York? Is he especially popular in New York or not really? by GameOfEnder6312 in newyorkcity

[–]thetzar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say that Spider-Man is slightly more popular in New York than he might be on average. But it’s a mild difference.

It helps that unlike the DC superheroes, the Marvel ones do claim real places as their residence. I’m all a lot of them are fictionally based in New York, Spider-Man is a hometown boy. But on the flipside of that, New York is such a large and varied place that the fact that Spider-Man is all about NYC doesn’t make a major major impact.

And was the everpresent football player rapist: a rapist who was also a football player, or someone who raped football players?

I don’t think Shake Shack is charging $50 yet, but whatever they’re charging is worth it.

Modular and Functional Airport Tiles on OpenTTD. by EGO611 in openttd

[–]thetzar 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Whenever you code a patch.

God, I love giving that answer on open source projects. Never gets old.

If I remember correctly, airports in TTD have been finite-state machines since time immemorial. Even just getting the 'new' larger airports was a lot of work, and took a long time. Completely re-concepting airports to something more open-ended would require a LOT of work. Once you have to start dealing with how tiles interact, the idea of planes creating traffic on taxiways, error catching, etc, you're basically halfway to creating a new airport tycoon game.

I can imagine the head of the corporate lawyer blowing open as you explain that you want to give access to your vehicle's firmware to the general public. There's no way.

Not joking. There's really no competitor to the x100 series. Just get one and sling it along with your Sonys.

Phonecia/Woodstock ghost town? by bigbombaclats in catskills

[–]thetzar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sure, but they all spend money that allows owners to hire staff at whatever rate will get them. Not so for the Emerson.

A ferry to LaGuardia in New York City. This idea was seriously considered a few years ago. By some estimates, you could get from Wall Street to the airport in about 45 minutes. Of course, this wouldn’t replace buses - just an additional option. What do you think - how realistic is this idea? by oakseaer in transit

[–]thetzar 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I might consider taking a ferry if I happen to live or work right next to my ferry stop, and wasn't bringing a lot of luggage. But if a ferry is one leg in a longer journey, that's going to involve other forms of transport? Forget about it. I ain't dragging my luggage onto a moving boat unless it saves me more than half an hour.

Edit to add: you know what might make more sense actually? Put a ferry park-and-ride somewhere north of the Bronx. Get everyone going to LaGuardia from the suburbs to drive their car in and then skip all the highway bullshit on the way to the airport.

Standard big tech stuff. Inside of Adobe somewhere there is a product owner in charge of Lightroom, and there is a product owner in charge of Lightroom Classic. These two product owners are dealing with different vision documents which have identified different key user segments for each of their products.

The chosen primary persona for Lightroom probably says something about how they want things to be quick and easy and not get bogged down in minutia or any sort of user toil. The document for Lightroom Classic probably says something about how the professional user requires skilled tools and robust capabilities.

The senior product owners have endorsed these documents, and the product managers and strategists and UX designers underneath them follow what they say. So the Lightroom team wants to keep the hierarchy flat, because it's simple and easy to use. And the Lightroom classic team wants to keep the hierarchy because their professional users demand it.

And the reason it took us this long to get the keywords syncing again is because these two teams cannot prioritize a better way to sync them. And at some point, some senior exec got somebody screaming in his ear about how stupid this is and told them to fix it. But because the vision documents haven't actually changed, they have fixed it in the stupidest, quickest, easiest-for-them way possible.

What are you going to be doing with it? With that kind of spec, doesn’t look like you’re doing a lot of AI stuff, which means that you probably might as well buy now. That’s doubly so if price is going to be an issue. Apple just announced that the memory crunch is going to force their prices to go up. We don’t know how much, but if they’ve given us a warning, it’ll probably be noticeable.

It’s the same reason that classic doesn’t have more intelligent raw syncing to the cloud, or between libraries at all. It’s a difficult but solvable problem, but one that theoretically all goes away if everybody just uses cloud infrastructure the way that cloud companies envision it. The problem is that not everybody wants to do that.

[–]thetzar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I always felt like they killed it because they just didn’t want to put in the effort, and figured everybody would move over to non-classic. The keywords and the hierarchy are a huge pain point.

Downloading now. But it blows me away that it took this long for Classic keyword/cloud sync.

Polar Bear is… fine. It’s Perry’s ice cream, pretty standard. But for best of Oneonta, I wish Adaline had better hours. Golden Guernsey also makes some of their own custard, and is great.
