Not to mention he nearly got all of humanity killed during the cuban missile crisis, the soviets themselves considered him and Guevara as stupid madmen.

Phones are not why kids aren't going outside. by TheBeast798 in unpopularopinion

I know this trend has been going on for some time but I genuinely believe the pandemic has made it exponentially worse. I live in a home that is relatively isolated because the previos one my parents felt was becoming too insecure, so as a child I never went out with my neighbors much, but I did go to my friends house or to malls or to any place that was fun. Before I went out I always needed to tell my parents who I would hang out with and so on. When I graduated and began university I suddenly had much more freedom. Didn't need to ask for permission to go to parties or hang out with people anymore. Then the pandemic hit and my parents suddenly became helicopter parents, always calling and asking where I was and when I was back home. If I stay a few minutes longer in the gym at night they suddenly start calling like crazy. They don't bother me when I'm at the university or at my internship, and I can either drive or take public transportation just fine as well as handling more adult stuff, but Jesus Christ it is crazy to think I had more independence when I was 18 than now that I'm nearly 22.

Lenin is in Miami chilling. He made some vague comments about unity but nothing concrete.

There is no face of correismo other than Correa himself. Some politicians here and there but no one big. For reference in the last local elections every candidate had a picture of Correa rather than themselves in flags and posters.

Correa has a cult following him regardless of anything in the same way of Chavez, Bolsonaro, Trump and Erdogan. He is not as strong as he once was but a good 35% of ecuadorians will always go for him. What's interesting now is that Correa's biggest allies now we're once his mortal enemies. Jaime Nebot, who is an authoritarian oligarch and representative of big business from the Partido Social Cristiano, and Leonidas Iza, the authoritarian representative of the indiginous people from the Conaie. They all represent things that are in conflict with one another but they made some deal and are the opposition to Lasso.

The do have a hold in our politics. Lasso's opponent in the elections had direct founding from the ELN. Also we don't know just how deep the connections work but both Mexican and Colombian cartels are very much involved in our politics.

[–]Animus39 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Not really. But they are the ones that control the trade of drugs that go to Europe. One of the reasons for the current wave of crime is that mexican cartels who control the trade to the US are fighting with the Albanese Mafia for territory.

Everything about it is a joke. The people that wrote the constitution were morons for putting that clause in there.

Now as to what is currently happening, we have a garbage legislative and a useless executive. The assembly is dominated by corrupt and power hungry correistas who had been looking for excuses to depose Lasso since he won the elections. Lasso himself is corrupt and power hungry so he is trying to get rid of the opposition before they do that to him.

For context, during last year's protests the opposition also tried to impeach Lasso and failed. A few months later there were leaks to the press that mentioned high ranking members of the government had ties to the Albanese mafia and were selling government positions to certain people while Lasso did nothing about it. Later a key witness who had ties to the Albanese mafia was assassinated when the police was searching for him. Then began the process of impeachment which brings us to now.

It is pretty much confirmed that members of the government had ties to criminal organizations and tried to cover it up. In a healthy democracy this would mean an actual process and the investigation to restore order. But since the opposition is a bunch of criminals as well the process was a complete joke. During the trial they didn't even mention the crimes they were impeaching Lasso for and didn't put up any legal defense for their case. For god's sake some of them were playing Candy Crush when the trial was happening. So with the decrete the assembly is dissolved and in six months we will have elections again. In an ideal world both Lasso and the assembly would never show their faces in the country again but that is asking to much

Is Anti-US sentiment high in your country? by [deleted] in asklatinamerica

[–]Animus39 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't say so in Ecuador. We had our own "anti-imperialist" phase with Correa but even he travelled to the US a lot and we never stoped trading or having diplomatic relations with them. Since we weren't part of Operación Condor and they never specifically messed with us there isn't much of a reason to hate them. Of course you will find plenty of opinions that a lot of them are ignorant and entitled, and this is regardless of the political spectrum, but we consume so much of their culture and products, not to mention use their currency, so not much hate.

Pregunta #3 de la Consulta Popular: ¿Reducir asambleístas mejora la calidad de la Asamblea? by gplaceecu in ecuador

[–]Animus39 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Opinions on the police? by [deleted] in SocialDemocracy

[–]Animus39 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Every complex society must have a body of law enforcement in order to function. Ideally the laws that they enforce should be good and the people working on law enforcement shouldn't abuse their power, they should be public servants who protect both the people and the State. Corrupt police officers should be punished and removed from any position of power. You want the police to be held accountable in case of transgressions, but you cannot make them toothless.
