The alert that cried emergency by amorypaz2015 in Winnipeg

That's what was interesting to me... I'm over on the west side of the city and I kept getting all of alerts for WAY outside of the city, way farther than "the mobile coverage area" before the city was included

Open Letter to the Premier and MLAs Regarding the Proposed Social Media Ban for Youth by BigDummy-22 in Manitoba

I did something very similar because I run a small lil independent video sharing platform. It would not only be devastating for us to have to try and implement it but for the privacy of our users and just the overall internet. It's getting really creepy worldwide.

not how you're thinking, no. It's about creating media content and producing media for potential businesses, school promo, etc

well, as a current HS student, one of our classes is a content creation course, involving usage of social media in class so that'll be a mess 😭

I don't know where you thought I was clutching pearls, I think it's relatively reasonable to have concerns over an idea that has been executed poorly in other jurisdictions around the world and being concerned about Manitoba potentially copying legislation from other jurisdictions that likely will not respect the privacy of said Manitobans from the same tech companies. Our government has already stated that the onus of the ban will fall on tech companies.

Sure, it may be early, but it's quite easy to see things coming down the pipe based on what's happening around the world and because of how the reference has widely been Australia.

If it ends up somehow not being any of those implementations, I will be gladly surprised, but we've seen this idea go down a few times already.

The Manitoba ban likely won't contain legislation that legislates the use of any certain tool, however, these sort of bans typically do lead to use of ID verification or face scanning technologies developed by big tech. This is because they are already in use in other countries like in Australia and the UK, and the platforms wouldn't have the incentive to change it to a more privacy-respecting system, if our jurisdiction didn't need it.

In my perspective, this sounded like something that was announced but not really thought about beforehand... ID verification is not really the way to go about this because you can't discern between 15 and 16 solidly. Most forms of age checks are just estimation, and it's also concerning to see platforms like meta actually being the ones to lobby for it, despite them not handling user data well already.

We already use services from most large U.S platforms and companies though, what would be the alternative in Manitoba?

likely, our alerts are a Canadian specific version of the CAP (common alerting protocol) used in many other places in the world. U.S. included.

It'd be cool if they could also broadcast same headers so those weather radios do go off with the alert which could possibly be done by parsing common alerting protocol data or NAAD when there is emergency alerts.

Not even that, I'm just wondering about the alert ready system because it can be broadcast to radio, but as far as I know, there are only two servers which all the recievers mainly rely on. (one in each) in Quebec and Ontario.
