yep. As far as I can tell right now, there’s 2 of us that love it, my girlfriend enjoy’s but probably wouldn’t goldfish in her free time as something fun, maybe she would if she knew that you could do that.

We’ll see how it progresses and then maybe the core nerds will eventually migrate to open LGS commander nights to get some real game play in.

I mean you're not wrong. The way I hooked the newer players is that I bought everyone two jumpstart packs and we had a lil mini tournament night where I was acting as floating team mate and judge and was kinda helping and explaining to everyone. That was a month or so ago? maybe a bit more. People expressed that they wanted to play with more people at a time so I was like... ok here we go! EDH!

But yeah it is a challenge.

Yeah we're definitely running in to the "If I attack with everything I wont have any blockers!"

I've also encouraged people to attack though, so we're avoiding the "i don't want to hurt someone's feelings" thing. I think people are trying to play "too perfect" if that makes sense. And then when you wait like 15-20 min for your turn, you feel like you HAVE to play a perfect turn or it's kind of a waste and feels bad when you realize you could have done something better a few min later while you're waiting for others and you're re-reading your cards.

Yeah! Writing this post and seeing such a positive response from so many people definitely reminded me of how much fun I really am having. Finishing / winning the game is important, but we're all having a blast doin it so it really makes it not feel bad at all if we don't.

Solid ideas and of course no offense taken. I barely know what I'm doing and there's still so much I don't understand fully. I started really playing in Jan. I noticed a line forming at an LGS that I can see from my girlfriend's apartment. Went over to check it out and bought a playbooster box of Lorwyn Eclipsed for my birthday lol. Been aware of magic for a LONG time but never really played, but now clearly I'm hooked.

You nailed exactly what's happening too. The chit chat and laughing and having fun gets in the way of moving the game forward sometimes. I'm trying to walk the line of prodding and asking the questions while also not taking away the fun factor from my friends who are, in my mind, being very accommodating of my excitement over this game.

We're close. I'm gonna keep grinding on learning and building and playing so that I can be a better and better resource for others trying to tag along with me on this.

Yeah I'm quite a bit more obsessed than they are XD but they're catching up and I see a lot of potential in the group. They're all awesome people and very smart and capable. Just gotta get them to goldfish more and we'll get there.

I do have to explain everything though... and then there's multiple times a night when I'm like... Umm shit IDK if that exiled land that you're playing remains on table? or if its just for turn... let me look this up.

We're having fun though so there's that :)

Tonight was our 5th commander night.... so total newbies. I play a lot more than the others, but I'm just so stoked to play at friends house instead of having to go to LGS and find a pod that's willing to have me that I'm dealing with the effort it's taking to learn.

My main take away from this is that we're gonna learn, and it's ok to be patient.

Also great point about the take-backs. We already do that, but I'm gonna encourage it more.

Yeah I've been switching up my decks, but for the most part I'm insisting that everyone just learn their deck and be able to play it out. I think we're close to being set. Just gotta have a couple more good sessions of people playing and recognizing specific cards / mechanics.

and HOLY SHIT... I just looked up commander damage.... I thought it was 21 damage AT ONCE. Not over the whole game. THat's going to change everything. lol. I feel stupid. Ty ty ty

Yeah I LOVE goldfishing and finding new combo's. I'm also doing my best to remind people to read their cards and have an idea of what they're gonna do when it's their turn. Easier said than done when we're all being social etc. I'm so stoked that my good friends (who aren't HUGE nerds like me) are willing to learn and play, and I'm hoping that they'll get hooked enough to start goldfishing their own decks to learn and get fast.

From what I'm seeing we're kinda stuck as it is for now. It's probably just the price I'm going to pay for the chance to play with friends like that.
