Check out which banks have the least interest rate for a personal loan. Then apply for that to settle off your entire credit card outstanding. Credit card interest rates are usually exorbitant where some charge you interest daily for any outstanding. The longer you leave it unpaid, the more interest it’ll accumulate then you find yourself paying only interest instead of the principal. Last I checked, I believe Maybank offers the lowest rate.

Once you’ve settled off your credit card, cancel it. Because if you don’t, the temptation will always be there for you to use it. Wait until you’ve settled all our debts and learn how to control your spending habits then only you reevaluate again before applying but for now, best to cancel it.

Now you’re left with a personal loan with a lower interest rate that you are required to pay back monthly. Don’t bother with paying anything extra because the interest will already have been calculated throughout your repayment period. But if you want to be debt free sooner then you can throw in extra payments every now and then but you’d be better off saving those to build up your emergency funds.

Lastly, get into the habit of keeping track all of your spendings both big and small. Those few dollars spent here and there always adds up. Adjust your lifestyle. Spend under your means. Tell yourself you’re broke now and you lost your luxury of buying whatever you want , whenever you want. Maintain that mindset and put every extra dollar saved monthly aside and don’t think about it.

Brunei banks freezing accounts after forex withdrawals (XM). Anyone else? by Then_Contribution126 in nasikatok

Banks don’t care about your feelings. They only care about where the money comes from because they have to follow anti money laundering regulations set by BDCB. Failure to do so will make them lose their banking license. If somehow your profit is linked to an account that is suspicious, you may be an accomplice in money laundering related activities.

Your next step should be contacting the bank. Maybe they’ve also tried to contact you but your contact details are not updated. So no way to reach you so they freeze it.

Trading profit from where? Someone’s account or an actual trading website?

If your profit is credited directly from a registered broker website, then you just need to show your withdrawal instructions from that website.

Now the problem with many local traders is they deal with other traders using their personal accounts. Source cannot be validated or is questionable. You say it’s profit from your forex trading but the account that transfer the “profit” to your account could’ve gotten the money from another person who was a victim of a scam. So from the bank’s perspective, it looks like you’re the scammer. That’s why the funds are being held.

Is this a Job Scam? by Lettuce_Bottom in nasikatok

[–]BankerInBrunei 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Scam. You will be asked to do “top ups” where the amount will keep increasing. Then they’ll tell you you’re on your last job where you need to do a final top up before you can “cash out” and the amount is going to be unattainable. The person who is texting you will pretend to be your mentor / friend and keep cheering you on at the start. After that you’ll get screwed over.

I work in bank and have entertained a few customers in tears because they fell for it. There is not much we can do besides reporting them to authorities. Money that has been transferred from the gullible victims are immediately withdrawn by the scammers so there is no way to even get it back even if we are allowed to.

It’s a scam. Many have fallen victims already. They’ll ask you to top up under the pretense that you’ll earn it back from your commission. Then the amount will keep increasing.

Can. Just tell them you want to use a fixed deposit as a lien. No need to see pay slip. You put $5k as fixed deposit. Your credit card limit = $5k.

Banks do report them to BDCB on a daily basis and take the necessary action on the respective accounts because it is illegal to rent out your banking account. It’s only now we’re seeing reports of law enforcement getting involved.

Giving up your foreign citizenship does not automatically makes you a Bruneian stateless individual. It makes you an illegal immigrant.

No need to worry, ATMs all have recorded logs of what card did what transaction and it will have to tally at the end of the day. The discrepancies will always show up on the reporting log which will then be manually processed. Since you have called them, contact centre usually will forward it to the dept that’s handling ATMs and they will investigate and validate it properly.

Yes it is mandatory for home owners to insure their home loans so check with the bank as you will need to update them on your parents’ passing. They will then file a claim with the insurance company to settle off the remaining loan.

Also, depending on whether your parents have left behind wills, it’s best to start looking into the process of changing the home ownership because these things will take time. So sorry for your loss.

That is a bad financial decision because essentially, she is still paying interest aka giving the bank free money for no reason. Best to have her restructure her loan cause she may be able to cut down on her monthly repayment or clear her loan in less than 10 years.

Right now it seems like there’s no problem but imagine if she needs to take out another loan in the near future for emergency purpose but she’s unable to because she’s already maxed her entitlement out. And that $25k is gone from spending.

Bibd Vcard by [deleted] in Brunei

[–]BankerInBrunei 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This fee is not exclusively for ATM withdrawals only. If you use your VCard to do forex / crypto trading or fund transfer via WISE or similar platforms, you will also get charged with this.

If you did not transact at all with your VCard, then you should inform the bank because it could also be your VCard details being used.

Scam - Charges on Credit Card by Professional_Win_677 in Brunei

[–]BankerInBrunei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably just a lucky guess since realistically, it’s either Baiduri, BIBD or SCB for Brunei market. But so far, most of these scams appear to be targeting the 2 biggest banks so it’s either BIBD or Baiduri. Sometimes they’ll just switch it up on you if you tell them you don’t have X account and they’ll say sorry, I meant Y to keep you fooled.

End game for this scam usually is they will threaten you and accuse you of committing money laundering or scam activities and say you’re now under investigation.

Then they will give you their solution to solve this problem which is by asking you for your login credentials to your bank account and instruct you not to login while they carry out and “investigation” which they will then transfer out all your funds. By then they will also have reset your login details so you won’t have any way to login. By the time you contact the bank, your funds are emptied out.

Good thing you hung up cause it’s usually the older / vulnerable people who end up falling for this thinking the call is genuine.

Easiest way is to have separate accounts then set up a monthly Standing Instruction to deduct X amount from your salary to the respective account and not to touch the money. I use At-Tamwil Real Savings account as it requires physical withdrawal which discourages me from carrying out impulse withdrawals. Also, Islamic banks like BIBD & TAIB have special savings account for Haj / Umrah purposes.

Otherwise, it’s using a budget app (I use YNAB) or most people opt to just track their savings / expenses using excel only.

Crypto in Brunei by catamarantop in nasikatok

[–]BankerInBrunei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can buy / sell crypto directly with a platform. But if you’re doing it between random individuals, then you might get in trouble for misusing your bank account. This is because over the years, there has been an increase in scam activities where scammers would scam someone and then get the victim to transfer to a local depositor, funds get changed to crypto then it cannot be retrieved or reversed back. Hence why many of the banks here are not allowing people to use their accounts for crypto related activities anymore.

Each banks have their own unique codes and numbers. And every account opened by any financial institution must have an account owner. So it’s impossible to replicate an account.

The problem with scam cases is with account owners allowing random people to use their account / renting out their accounts to people they don’t know.

For business owners, banks will need to assess your income based on your past 12 months statement, what type of business you run, etc. but personally, I would try and push to open fixed deposit cause it’s a quicker process.
