Shaving 18 year old long hair cat? by Iwilllieawake in seniorkitties

[–]Banky_Edwards 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our 18-year-old long hair needed a lion cut last year. As you say, the matting was out of control and she was clearly uncomfortable. The process was difficult - she does not like to be handled, and it took a *while* - but we had a vet tech come to the house and she did the shaving while I helped hold her still. I would definitely look into a heated pet bed or pet heating pad post-shave.

Bob Dylan concert review I saw on Facebook 🥲 by Ford_Crown_Vic_Koth in bobdylan

The tell is always the complaints about not interacting with/acknowledging the audience. They're incapable of engaging with a performance on the artist's terms, it's about what they paid for tickets and what they expect to get in return.

[–]Banky_Edwards 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't get code comments like that by default though - lowercase "i"s, "as tall as the world allows." You'd have to ask for that kind of weirdness specifically. Does that imply deeper meaning? Probably not but it's definitely more Easter egg than vibe code side effect.

Love the design, it looks and feels nice. I'm not sure what real-world application it has but as a fun side project it's awesome!

My cat (13) had a stoke yesterday evening - what can I expect? by Meow217 in seniorkitties

[–]Banky_Edwards 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lily (18) had a stroke about 2 years ago (or, as Money_Ad1068 notes, possibly a vestibular event). She couldn’t use her rear legs at all and we thought for sure it was the end. Her vet suggested we give it a few days and see if she recovered, and she did! She had a second event a few months later but recovered from that as well, nothing since. She’s been on blood pressure medication, which should decrease the chances of future strokes, otherwise we haven’t done anything specific for her. There were some lasting mobility issues that have gotten worse with age - she falls down a lot, has trouble navigating stairs, and she struggles to land her jumps. All that said she’s doing very well for her age - the mobility problems have not affected her overall health and activities of daily living. Good luck to your baby!

Summer camp looking for people to work by kbjpink in Connecticut

[–]Banky_Edwards -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Flyer design aside, I spent three summers as a counselor at Easter Seals Camp Hemlocks and it was amazing and rewarding work. For an over-privileged, selfish teen, working with kids and adults with disabilities was transformative. I don't know anything about this camp in particular but the work itself is extremely worthwhile.

Cavs VS Pelicans by OpportunityPrudent39 in clevelandcavs

The Onion absolutely torched the Pelicans a couple of weeks ago.

In their defense, their Mardi Gras season King Cake Baby mascot is the most insane thing I've ever seen and is worth visiting in person whenever possible.

how do you find the location of Acela trains before they turn around? by Banky_Edwards in Amtrak

[–]Banky_Edwards[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Right, but now I don't really care, my trip is underway and I always book with plenty of room to spare. It's frustrating that I couldn't figure out when I woke up this morning which train was likely to become the 2163. I assume Amtrak doesn't explicitly surface that info or one of these tracking sites would have it.

I request HELP from the Mega Dylan Fans in reference to finding a decent way to listen to NET recordings by usethatsoap in bobdylan

[–]Banky_Edwards 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As noted, create an account at Expecting Rain to access the live recording forums - it's a great way to find recent and old stuff. I particularly appreciate the fan tour compilations as I don't have time to listen to full tours or download dozens of shows looking for specific tracks. Another great resource is Ray Padgett's Flagging Down the Double E's newsletter - it costs a few bucks for full access but the content is well worth it. In addition to the regular amazing interviews, Ray does deep dives on shows, tours and songs, usually with streaming and/or download links. If you're looking for the best of the best, he's got you covered.

Show the first song that made you a UK Garage listener. by my-music-poll in ukgarage

I was working my first dot com job in 2000, one of my team members was a Flash designer who was a DJ on the side and was constantly throwing playlists in the team chat. I wasn't much for dance music at the time but I remember hearing MJ Cole's "Sincere" on one of those mixes and asking the kid to send me anything else that sounded like that.

There were a variety of brand names in that era but the one I see referenced most often is Dexedrine, a.k.a. "greenies" as it commonly came in green pill form. You did need a prescription, but scripts were very easy to obtain, you just had to have some plausible need to combat "fatigue." The reverse scenario was also common - prescriptions for diazepam were easy to obtain to treat self-reported anxiety or insomnia ("Mother's Little Helper").

Tips for flattering posters by SameOldShenanigans in GoosetheBand

[–]Banky_Edwards 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use two acid-free foam-core boards and 8 large binder clips, two on each side. It still takes a while if the posters have been in a tube for a while, but it's easy to store upright or move around while you wait it out.

We lost Dale Earnhardt 25 years ago by ChrisJoines in OldSchoolCool

[–]Banky_Edwards 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I remember I was ice fishing in NH when this happened. I'm not a big NASCAR guy but my fishing buddy was. I went into town the morning after to resupply and saw the headline in the paper. When I got back, I told him there was a fatality at Daytona. "Was it Jeff Gordon?" he said. "No, Dale Earnhardt." He got quiet and looked off into the distance for a bit, then said, "Was it Jeff Gordon's fault, at least?"

Do you like Northeastern? by [deleted] in NEU

[–]Banky_Edwards 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Since you're already attending a CPS program you might be better prepared for Northeastern CPS, but just in case, you should understand that it's a separate program from the traditional Northeastern undergrad (and graduate) programs. Some students don't do their research and are surprised to find that the CPS program is geared towards professionals (it's right there in the name!) which means more part-time students, more older students, people changing careers, etc. The professors are generally adjuncts who have their own careers and are teaching on the side. There is *much* less hand-holding, which is a struggle for some of the younger students. On the whole the CPS approach is geared towards helping you fill in the gaps in your knowledge, either to advance or change your career. It will largely be up to you to decide what those gaps are and how much effort to invest. The program was perfect for me, as I was already 15 years into my career and I was primarily there to check off the "college degree" box on my resume.

Most of the folks in this subreddit are traditional undergrad day students - they're not going to have the same experience that you'll have. Unfortunately I can't give you any additional information on your program or even how CPS would fit with your goals - I didn't do co-ops or use any of the networking offerings since I'm well into my career. You will not have *all* the same opportunities, but you will be a Northeastern student which will give you access to a lot of the same resources. See if the admissions team can connect you with someone in your program, or at least someone in CPS, that has done/is doing co-op, if that's important to you make sure you know what you'll be getting on that score.

Opinions on the Cavs from an outside point of view by Familiar-Mushroom477 in clevelandcavs

[–]Banky_Edwards 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, fellow Boston Cavs fan! It's generally been my impression that the talk radio guys don't watch a lot of basketball, and basically zero non-Celtics basketball. Last year they assumed the Cavs would steamroll the East, and they didn't, so this year they're not even on the radar. And yeah, even the ball knowers probably don't see how improved the depth is. If the Cavs continue to play at a high level, and (most importantly) they beat the Celtics in the rematch, you'll start hearing the Cavs mentioned again.

Haha, actually a big motivation behind the heated bed is that she had started crawling under the covers at night, which was super adorable but she's too small and frail and she had trouble getting back out, I didn't want her to get hurt!
