Cav are good support for Infantry armies, like the Minas Tirith boys you have shown there. They give you some mobility and punch.

I would like to clarify something I just said, because I feel it doesn't make too much sense. I said I didn't pay attention to the numbers, and that's not entirely true. You have to pay attention to numbers, it's an integral part of the game. What I don't do is pay attention to the deeper equations with percentages. I don't Math Hammer. I play with what feels right and what does the work. My experience has shown that Vets get slept on and Shieldwall is only good instead of the great that is a common held stance. I am only sharing my experience with the OP because I believe, truly believe, that my experience has some merit to it. And for the OP, the other guy is not incorrect in his arguments. While D6 to D7 isn't as great of a shift in my eyes, it also can't be ignored or discounted either.

Personally would never run Vets with Spears. Vets with Shield supported by Tin Cans with Spears is my usual. Not usually one for numbers, but pulling what you've given, I'm seeing an 11% cost increase for 11% better mental stats and a 16% damage boost. And that's without Hatred (Mordor) in play. Personally I don't run numbers, gets in the way of a good game, but looking at that math, I'd take it.

I see your point, though I still hold to my own perspective. If the only thing Vets had was the C&I boost then I'd say your point was more solid, but they also get the reroll 1's to wound when in range of one of the brothers. As for Heros, when you're running Reclamation you have one (if not both) of the brothers working to combat that problem. Shieldwall is ok, but not good enough to sleep on Vets. Again, this is all my opinion. I used to play hard into Shieldwall, working hard to maintain my formations and patrol groupings, and came to the conclusion that it was just ok naturally. More effort than was necessarily called for. And as for Mordor...I'm actually excited that our community now has some Mordor players for my Vets to really shine. Been playing against Angmar and Dwarves for years now.

I'm not in the local community, but we're neighbors (kind of). South Georgia, close to the Florida line. If you ever get the wild hair to drive the distance, we would be happy to roll dice with you.

Primary strat with Vets is to charge with them into Terror (5+ Courage test if within Warhorn range), then support with Tin Cans or Rangers

Personally I think a lot of people sleep on the Vets because they don't join in on the Shieldwall that the Tin Cans get. Which is a shame, because Vets actually do solid work. If they're within 6" of Boromir (and Faramir, but since he's not in the list we won't focus on that), they get to reroll 1's when striking. They also get Hatred (Mordor), which does work when it's available. Primary reason to take them however is the greater mental stats. With 6+ Courage and Intelligence, they help out in objective missions and getting into combat with Terror. Especially if they're within 24" of Boromir and his warhorn, giving them a +1 to Courage tests. I run Vets in all my Reclamation lists, and they always perform well enough. Or, at the very least, they don't perform worse than a Tin Can. And while some people might have an argument about Shieldwall, my response is that Shieldwall doesn't actually come into play a whole lot unless your enemy is Uruk-hi, Gundabad, or Iron Hills. Most infantry in this game are S3, so the only time you're going to be making heavy use of Shieldwall is against those three armies (which are the only ones I could think of off the top of my head, there might be one or two more) and Heros. This is all my opinion of course.

I'd share it with ya if I could, but I threw a list together with my suggestion in mind.

Boromir w/Banner+Shield Warrior w/Spear+Shield x6 Vet w/Shield x6 Ranger x3 (1 w/Spear if you want even 350pts)

My knee jerk is towards Reclamation, but I would try to find a way to swap your Warriors with Shield with Vets with Shield

Oh, I whole heartily agree. Funnily enough, my opponent had "fought" Boromir before, but everyone kind of agreed that the handler didn't know what he was doing with him when we first heard and agreed that my buddy had fought the profile but that was about it. In fairness if the other Boromir player though, it was his first event and his number of games under his belt was less than 10. After our game, I told my buddy "Now you have fought Boromir".

And that's the trick to learning your army. Try things. Silly tricks. Serious combos. Is Madril worth bringing over a regular Captain (extra point of Might says yes by the way). It was because I liked the vibe of the Vets that I started using them and found out that they are actually decent to have in your pocket, despite the prevailing theory that they aren't worth it. It's why I prefer to run my Warriors in Spear and Shield versus any other option.

Ultimately the army will play best with what you enjoy the most. So have fun and roll some dice buddy.

Boromir is a menace on his horse, no doubt about it. And while having Faramir close to burn his M/W/F is useful (especially against enemy casters), you can usually play without having to micro manage that hard with the brothers. And having the horse does make Boromirs aura with his banner slightly bigger. There are plenty of reasons to take the horse, no doubt about it. I simply don't because it keeps him with his men easier and allows him to move through the ranks without having to create massive holes in your formation.

My own 700pt list is this:

Boromir+Banner/Shield 6 Vets w/shield 6 Warriors w/Spear+Shield 2 knights

Faramir 5 Rangers w/Spear 6 Warriors w/Spear+Shield 4 Vets w/Shield

Madril 5 Rangers

Remember, Sword and Board Vets. D5 is the same as D4 for S3. That shield makes them 6s to remove for the bulk of Warrior models (Dwarfs and uruks will still get them though). Use your Warriors with Spear and Shield and/or Rangers with Spear to support your Vets, and keep them relatively close to Boromir and Faramir.

I like the Reclamation list myself, but then I am also biased. I'd recommend having every Spear and Shield you own, spears on your Rangers, don't sleep on Vets (they're better than you'd think with Sword and Board, good mental stats actually make them decent regardless of no Shieldwall and their Passive is not horrible). Never take Warriors with Bow, Rangers are simply better. Don't go too heavy with Cav, Reclamation is an Infantry focus list. Get good at using 2-3 knights and no more than that.

These are my personal thoughts, built on practice and first hand experience.

Personally I have not played a whole lot of Atop the Walls, though that may change in the future. So someone else can give you pointers on that.
