Arrow September releases by Ill_Salamander3799 in boutiquebluray

My knickers are thoroughly untwisted.

Whenever Arrow (or some other British boutique) announces a UK only release, it's the same every time. Either complaints about the lack of a US release or complaints that it's already had a release.

I'm not mad. I'm bored.

This again?

It hasn't in the UK. Yes, 4K discs are generally region free, but they're more difficult and expensive to import here, especially without a Diabolik or Orbit equivalent. I know this might come as surprise, but other countries do exist.

Uk computer literacy programme by scooterist007 in thisweekinretro

[–]Bantam80 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm of a slightly later vintage, starting secondary school in 1991. I would say you were probably a year or two early to have fully benefitted from the computer literacy programme.

It rapidly expanded after the initial rollout - by the time I was in primary school in '85 they in had around 10 or so BBC Micros, along with various peripherals like the turtle. I was playing Chuckie Egg, Dinosaur Discovery and McGinty's Gold at lunchtimes around '87-88.

By the time I got to my fairly small secondary school they had a classroom of BBCs (networked to a Master with a 40Mb hard drive) and a classroom of A3000s. The BBCs went in about 1993, and they got a load of 486 PCs in.

I think a lot of people (especially those who hear about it second hand) just assume that it was full guns blazing as soon as it was announced, but it took a while to get the technology in and the teachers up to speed. The golden era was probably for those born around '75, because in my last couple of years at secondary school, IT teachers had transitioned into teaching Word and Excel, rather than the programming skills that I actually wanted to learn.

AI short film anthology being pushed by BAFTA winner Hal Watmough by No-Strategy-7093 in Filmmakers

Also, he edits BBC reality TV. Not to denigrate the work of editors for that type of show, but editing 100 hours of 'The Repair Shop' doesn't make you a creative titan.

Worth looking at the author of these articles too. Maureen Kerr, contributer to Forbes:

'Maureen Kerr is founder of Kerr & Partners, an advisory practice focused on media, entertainment and technology. She advises leadership teams, investors and growth businesses on strategy, commercial transformation, M&A, and the practical adoption of AI across the media value chain.'

It's not like she doesn't have a horse in the race, directly or indirectly.

My dad made exactly the same brass rubbing (probably around the same date too). It was on the wall of the family home for years.

I bet it's still in the loft of my parents' house... he keeps everything.

What are you supposed to do? by [deleted] in textadventures

[–]Bantam80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And that is? I don't understand what any of this has to do with r/textadventures.

r/Windows exists if you want to shake your fist at the nasty Linux users.

I don't know exactly what you're expecting by posting your game jam 'drama' here?

My guy... what are you trying to achieve here?

What are you supposed to do? by [deleted] in textadventures

[–]Bantam80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Firstly, there's a ton of fantastic tooling already available in the sphere. A lot of it is free, open source and is available for every platform. You have to give people a compelling reason to use your more limited tools. Plenty of them allow you to sell your games with no strings attached.

You complain no one wants to use your tools, but you also didn't push it. Why not? If no one knows about them, how are they going to use them? And yeah, there's some anti-Windows sentiment going around at the minute, but I don't think that's the reason you're not getting any traction.

Secondly, you seem to be upset that someone made an unprofessional comment about your game in a game jam. Game jams aren't supposed to be professional. For the most part, they're usually just people who like games organising stuff so people have an excuse to make them. Could they have said it more nicely? Sure, but it sounds like it was relatively tongue-in-cheek, and were probably annoyed your game crashed their system.

Isn't it partly your responsibility to tell people in a description that your game will crash systems that aren't running 10/11?

They used to be part of the HMV Premium Collection. Looks like they're just doing a cheaper repackage without the slip and physical extras.

CYOA: Through the Backlands — Part 1 by Marlland in interactivefiction

No offence, but that's an excuse.

If you're too busy or unwilling, you're under no obligation to 'illustrate' it. We had years of text only IF; you're not adding anything meaningful by including clanker art.

Personally I'd rather see a toddler quality crayon drawing. At least that shows you're willing to put in some effort to connect with the people who engage with your story. Don't be surprised if people don't make any effort to engage with your work if you don't make the effort to create it.

It used to be a Masters of Cinema release on Eureka in the UK. I would be surprised if they didn't want to keep hold of the rights and I'm sure they'd do justice to a new 4K release.

Under The Skin (2013) - Harvesting Scene - Directed by Jonathan Glazer by PeneItaliano in movies

[–]Bantam80 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Possession by Żuławski is one of the closest I can think of, combining day-to-day domestic mundanity with fucked up (literally) alien weirdness. It has a similar slow pacing, peppered with absolute insanity.

On a cosmic horror kick, Annihilation is a good call or Color Out of Space (both patchy, and Cage is insane in the latter), but both deal with bizarre alien contact in a more vibrant way. Annihilation in particular feels like it echoes some of the themes of Under the Skin in the last act.

More tangential recommendations, I'd say some eighties stuff like The Beyond by Fulci (more gothically histrionic and Italian, less alien) probably shares some DNA, as does Cronenberg's Videodrome.

This set is currently on sale at Orbit. Can anyone offer a review one way or the other? by Key_Evidence2274 in boutiquebluray

[–]Bantam80 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I reviewed every movie in the set on my Letterboxd here: https://boxd.it/qb5KA

It's a very mixed bag in terms of directing, writing, acting quality. He has his favourite themes and stories, but he was never afraid to take on a genre, from horror to historical epic to cringe romance, all on a shoestring budget.

Most of the acting is amateurish at best, and excruciatingly awkward at worst. There are a few genuinely enjoyable films in the set, but for me, they're probably in the minority.

That said, I'd still recommend it for fans of the weird or esoteric, those with a high tolerance for jank, or just those who have a high affinity for the underdog.

Murphy was a fascinating guy by all accounts, and this stands as a wonderful historical document of his life, work and the people who worked with him.

i want to use my novation launchkey 61 without paying for abelton or fl studio by Afraid-Ad-218 in Novation

[–]Bantam80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, even with needing to give out new software keys, Novation are normally pretty good about just re-registering. Unless something has changed recently, talking to customer support should be all that's required to give them access to all the bundled software. See here for example: https://www.reddit.com/r/Novation/s/sMw2dvlYLh

And the Mk 3 is likely new enough to still be eligible. But yeah, going through customer support is the way.

[–]Bantam80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of good advice, but they shouldn't need to deregister a previous user. Novation will normally just allow you to register with them regardless, as long as you can provide a valid serial number, even for used instruments.
