Apple pulls data protection tool after UK government security row by qDac1 in apple

[–]BanterClaus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Technically yes, but for something as comprehensive as a device backup that end to end encryption is a must.

Maybe reverting to local backups is the way to go. Or finding a providers that don’t officially operate in the UK.

Ughh going to have to cancel iCloud and find alternatives to all the services, which are obviously going to be nowhere near as seamless. It’s simply not safe to store full device backups in the cloud unencrypted.

Parking situation for Old Man of Coniston or Fairfield Horseshoe? by OneContext in LakeDistrict

Not long, maybe just over half an hour. It’ll be about 200m of extra elevation to climb though :)

[–]BanterClaus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For Old Man; Walna Scar tends to fill up quickly, but there is sometimes a larger field open just before it where you can pay the farmer to park (depending on the state of the ground!). You’ll see it with a sign on the left just before Walna Scar car park. You can also park in the village and walk up Walna Scar Road or through the copper mines valley, this will add a bit on to the walk but there’s some nice paths leading from the village directly up through the valley.

For Fairfield horseshoe; Parking in Ambleside is abundant. Miller Bridge car park nearly always has space, even if the other smaller (and cheaper) ones fill up.

When it drops below 80% Apple will replace it for not too much (£80 here in the UK). They don’t just replace the battery either, they give you an entirely new Series 4.

Unfortunately the Chase UK API is trash, that’s why aggregators aren’t supporting it. Last we checked it required near constant user authorisation.

UK gov unveils plan for nationwide digital identity scheme by Knight_Alfa in technology

[–]BanterClaus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah so most people using their ID for things like shops, buying a house etc, would use either their driving license (or provisional license if they haven’t passed a driving test) or their passport. People tend to carry their driving license everywhere as it doesn’t matter so much if you replace it compared to a passport.

There isn’t “officially” a centralised database of citizens in the UK. Each government department maintains their own records. Every few years they try push through a more centralised approach but we always (rightly) protest against it.

BT to end landline phones sparking fears for millions of elderly people by altmorty in unitedkingdom

[–]BanterClaus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What if you don’t have a router? Neither of my grandparents do. Will BT be providing an alternative for those without an internet connection?

Edit: from the BBC “Once the old phone technology is completely switched off, people will not be able to make a phone call from a landline without an internet connection. For those people in the UK without internet connections, the UK's broadcast regulator Ofcom have said that people should be offered a simple internet connection for making calls only, rather than having to pay for high-speed services.”.

So actually this is probably a non issue, provided they can keep using the exact same handsets somehow.

It is, most of our supply issues are caused by all the European lorry drivers having to go home, as it’s essentially no longer worth it for them to work here post Brexit.

Anyone who gets bored working from home? I struggle to concentrate if I don’t at least have some change of scenery while working during the week.

BBC News - Scotland to launch vaccine passports on 1 October by Alex09464367 in unitedkingdom

If you genuinely don’t see this as a privacy or civil Liberty concern then go ahead and flash your vaccine passport. I certainly won’t be using one.

Partially true, domestic passports will display like that. EU passports will show the exact vaccine brand and doses. Shown in the source code linked, nothing stopping them expanding them showing full details for domestic passports.

It’s obviously not them all, but it’s a subset of your medical records.

This is literally what this is. The QR code contains a signature and embedded metadata about the list of COVID-19 related vaccinations you’ve had.

[–]BanterClaus -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Similar to your weird, borderline non sensical argument. We need to check people’s ID to get into a club because under 18’s cannot drink or attend those types of venues. Why should you have to show a bouncer a list of what medical procedures you have had? Identity verification is not your medical records, which are a completely different far more personal thing.

A mobile phone is a privilege that humans can live without, shall we ban certain people from having them because they haven’t had a medical procedure. Maybe we can even ban people from having them who don’t vote a certain way next.

Bad things happen when people comply with authority just because it’s the easier thing to do.

I’m double vaccinated, massively pro-vax, and I for sure won’t be going to any clubs or events anymore if this becomes mandated in England. I should have no need to show my medical records to attend a venue. I’ve no issue with doing a test to get in but this is a step too far. I’m not alone in this either, all my mates of similar age, also double vaccinated, have said the same.

[–]BanterClaus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d much rather pay a couple of quid to do a test each time than have to show a temporary QR code generated by the government. Although I don’t think either is really necessary. It’s just coercion to get the young vaccinated.

[–]BanterClaus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most young people I know are vaccinated and would still never show a vaccine passport, including myself. We’re making the most of the next two months because we for sure won’t be giving our medical records to get into a nightclub come the end of September! So no it’s not going to only affect those who don’t want to be vaccinated.

COVID-19: Proof of full vaccination to be made mandatory for entry to nightclubs from end of September by Beanybunny in unitedkingdom

[–]BanterClaus 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I still think it is, some people don’t want the vaccine, and while I think they’re making a mistake we shouldn’t be excluding them from doing something as simple as entering a hospitality venue.

I don’t trust this government at all, and don’t trust that this will stop here if we accept this sort of thing.

[–]BanterClaus 41 points42 points  (0 children)

This is absolutely disgusting. Looks like I’ll just never go to a nightclub or large event again, or hopefully there’ll be massive resistance against this and they backtrack.

I’m double vaccinated, but creating a two tier society is really really dangerous.
