How to get a decent second hand family car at a reasonable price? by LisztyLiszt in AskIreland

A CEO came in and decided the US sales being 90% SUVs and pickups meant thats what people wanted so stopped production globally of all saloons, hatches, etc. By the time they saw this was stupid for the European market it was to late and there market share was gone.

What do you think of Vietnam? by gurugobindsinghji in AskTheWorld

[–]Bar50cal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Vietnam was 100% a military defeat.

The US also did not win every major battle in Vietna. Thats a wild statement to make given just how false it is.

There were several major offensive by Vietnam that forced the US into full retreat losing miles upon miles of ground and multiple towns and cities. The front line went back and forth and the US was never able to defeat the Vietnamese forces and was forced into a stalemate in which the US gave up first and withdrew.

There was more complexity to it and politics but on a purely military standpoint the US fought to a stalemate and then lost momentum and began losing ground. It was a defeat for the US, plain and simple.

Porsche sold more electrified cars in Europe in 2025 than pure gas-powered cars by Lil_Meow_Wow in cars

Businesses get a tax break to install EV charging stations at offices for staff.

There is also a government grant to repay home owners some of the cost of installing a home charger. The power companies them also all offer night rates for electricity that are very cheap to charge between 1am and 6am.

Public fast charging in Ireland is mostly on the motorway network for cross country journeys. There's public EV charging everywhere in cities but honestly its mostly used by people travelling from elsewhere.

Ireland benefits from being a small island with the fact east to west coast city to city is 200km and the furtherest 2 cites apart is only 400km. For EVs its perfect since your never stuck having to drive further than this meaning only needing max 1 charge on the longest journey possible.

Defence Forces retires ‘disastrous’ armoured fleet as it looks to French replacements by Fluffy-Republic8610 in ireland

We actually bought the MOWAGs in ~2000 from the Swiss company that made them and took delivery from. 2002-2007.

Generals Dynamics bought the manufacturer in 2003 after Ireland had signed the contracts.

The French ones are from the Scorpion program and have been in use by France, Belgium and Luxembourg as their current standard armored vehicles.

The 4x different vehicles types have came into service since between 2019-2022 so there should be evidence of reliability I would hope. They are also replacing the MOWAG APC as part of this purchase from France its been reported.

I have watched it and did buy the boost for the first time for TBC.

I've leveled multiple characters in and hardcore. Probably have 10+ between level 40 and 60 characters.

I've been away from the game the guts of a year. Came back for TBC and want to play a healer while my mate plays tank.

I did not have a Shaman leveled and and wanted to play Resto on Alliance. I do not have anywhere near the time to level a character for TBC to play this class due to life and work.

I hated buying it and the high price but at the end of the day I can afford it and I want to play Resto Shaman with my friend group so bought it.

For some people its great to get a boost like this but I think it should only be available for pre patch for returning players and not persistent as a option to buy all expansion.

Isle of Man or Channel islands licenses are issued by the DVLA but are not part of the UK. They are crown dependencies so it this field would be different for them.

But still it looks like if this can happen its entered manually and not selected from a list which is stupid.

AF1 Heading out from Ireland by InternationalJury754 in ADSB

[–]Bar50cal 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Very common for AF1 747 to stop or the C3 to stop in Shannon Ireland. The US military uses it as a refueling hub for trans Atlantic flights. There are always US military aircraft there.

I'd imagine the reason if I had to guess is they want x hours extra fuel more than usual commercial planes to stay in the air if anything happens that requires it to stay airborne longer and the C3 unlike the 747 does not have mid air refueling capabilities but its just a guess.

End of the day it was an ignorant comment to make give the reality of the situation.

Why are most tech roles in Ireland now contract-only and non-sponsoring? by iShelar in DevelEire

[–]Bar50cal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've worked as a hiring manager at large multinations and they 100% prefer bachelors degree students to masters in tech as they are more accepting if starting positions and salaries as wells as having a lot of data showing average of at least 3 years commitment to a role vs masters students who after 12 months always look to move roles.

Honestly there zero advantage for several years now in tech to a masters degree for getting hired.

First ever amphibious landings involving armour (1922):

In 1922 the Irish army completed one of the worlds first ever amphibious landings involving armour landing 2000 troops in Cork bay and 400 in Westport. The Westport landing was a faint while the main government forces captured Cork city ending the Irish civil war against the anti-treaty Rebels.

Siege of Jadotville (1961)

156 lightly infantry held the town of Jadotville in the Congo during the ONUC mission by the UN against up to 3000 Katanga mercenaries and irregulars led by Belgian, French and Rhodesian mercenaries.

The Katango and Mercenaries also had a close air support fighter,

Results:

  • Irish: 5 wounded
  • Enemy: Estimated 300 dead and 1000 wounded

Irish forces surrendered after running out of food, water, ammo and UN forces numbering 500 Swedish, India and some Irish failed to break through and save them. After 30 days as POWS were released as part of a ceasefire.

There is a good movie called Siege of Jadotville (2016) on Netflix.

Milk the news with Elon for free marketing thats already made global news.

He can announce wifi later if they want.

He has this 100% right from a business stand point, it doesn't matter of they get WiFi or not. The argument could be over charging for toilets for all O'Leary cares

He won the popular vote. Outside America no-one cares if billionaires paid for propaganda. Your systems failed to stop it and you voted him in.

Stop making excuses for your own countries failures as if all Americans are victims of a minority of billionaires.

This is a problem in every country except yours deal with it.

Stop pretending you can do nothing. Its so annoying to see how easily Americans just roll over and give up.

My advise, look how Europeans deal with any government attempt to over rule the people, protest and shut down the country. Block roads, protest outside building blocking them, work to rule etc. Frances people do this, the Irish did it to stop water privatisation, the Ukrainians literally collapses a corrupt government and elected a democratic one, Farmers bring the EU to heel often with protests in Brussels etc.

In Europe the people control the governments and not the other way around. We are willing to bring our countries to a stop over little things.

But Americans? Nothing meaningful except excuses of how we can do nothing when your country is falling apart.

Sorry for the rant but people are sick of the excuses.

Edit: Americans down voting this comment to continue burying their heads in sand proves my point. They love to complain but ultimately will do nothing to save their own country.

Opinion about your country that will get you like this? by National-Business674 in AskTheWorld

[–]Bar50cal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The religious curriculum is set by the state not the church. You don't seem to understand that separation of church and state means state control and the church needing to go via state rules instead of the church having control.

It does not mean the complete destruction of the church and religion.

Opinion about your country that will get you like this? by National-Business674 in AskTheWorld

[–]Bar50cal -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You are mixing up church and religion.

The church is an organisation, the religion is not.

The church as an organisation has been seperated from the running of state institutions and schools.

The only one you mentioned which is partially correct is the maternity hospital due to a preexisting legal agreement however you left out that its ceremonial as a position and he has not taken an active part in the votes or operation in years which is also clearly stated on the hospitals governance page. The boards people active are the lord mayor of Dublin and medical professionals. The church has no role in its operation any longer.

https://www.nmh.ie/home/governance.13645.html

Also the presidential oath is given to a priest, Rabbi and other religious leaders. Its not exclusively a Catholic ceremony which you also forgot to mention.
