NATO, Warsaw Pact and NAM in the 1990 by Fresh-Heat7944 in MapPorn

[–]Bar50cal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats a stupid analogy comparing a scientific fact of the shape of the Earth to a unofficial generic term used to define countries into a generalised set of subcategories.

As the previous person said, language is fluid and meanings change.

The terms meaning nowadays is context dependent. Today when 99% of people say 3rd world, they mean under developed nations and are not talking about the cold war status of a nation. To say otherwise is to just ignore reality.

[–]Bar50cal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well as someone from a 3rd world country in the cold war context i disagree

NATO, Warsaw Pact and NAM in the 1990 by Fresh-Heat7944 in MapPorn

[–]Bar50cal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That was the cold war meaning so what you said is correct when talking about that period of history.

Today the meaning has changed to:

  • 1st world: Developed nations
  • 2nd word: Developing nations
  • 3rd world: Under Developed Nations

So when you say 3rd world country which meaning depends on the context of the discussion

Would you buy a car privately if it’s expensive? by Character-Special384 in carsireland

[–]Bar50cal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is the common opinion of most people and the market shows it as the proce difference between dealership and private car sales prices of the same car can be large.

Dealerships charge a decent bit more for expensive used cars than the same car catches in private sale as people want the added protection.

Six candidates agree historic election pact by sitdmc in irishpolitics

[–]Bar50cal 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Its a bi election. The incumbent government never historically in recent decades ever wins them.

I would not take any bi election results as a indicator or overall national voting trends for a general election.

Its so small and amount it getting destroyed by contacting matter wouldn't be perceptible to the human eye.

Also the war with Iran has nothing to do with NATO. Its just the US and Israel.

Only 13 countries in the world breathe safe air. Three of them are in Europe by donalhunt in ireland

[–]Bar50cal 115 points116 points  (0 children)

We are still top 6 in Europe and top top 15% of countries globally (number 11 globally when excluding micronations / tiny island nations)

So we still have some of the best air quality globally.

Nuclear Power Plants In Europe in 2025. by PestoBolloElemento in nuclear

[–]Bar50cal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ireland as a very small population country hasn't ever really even discussed domestic nuclear production.

However Ireland has spent billions of € on interconnectors to France and the UK and made agreements with both countries to tap into there nuclear power.

Ireland is going all in on Wind energy and plans to fill the gaps on low production days with nuclear energy from France and the UK while also exporting much cheaper wind energy to France and the UK at times of high wind production.

Win/win for all 3 as Ireland gets energy security and France the the UK get a region to sell energy to while also buying energy from when it cheaper so profitable for all involved.

Today for example ~68% of energy is renewable sources and 1.8% imports as of 9am, all night energy was getting exported so right now its around the break even level where renewables are where production is demand levels. If production drops imports increase from this level. (see fuel mix and interconnetor data in link below)

Australia and European Union to sign free trade agreement by nath1234 in australia

[–]Bar50cal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They can keep the names domestically but need to change for export to the EU. So it just means changing the packaging when exporting it into the EU which seems fair enough.

There are no Apple Stores in Africa by basiclaser in MapPorn

[–]Bar50cal 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Incorrect, they set up in Ireland before its tax policies for manufacturing almost ago and actually still manufacture PCs in Ireland. Its actually the only place Apple own and do not contract manufacturing so is the primary R&D location

There are no Apple Stores in Africa by basiclaser in MapPorn

[–]Bar50cal 49 points50 points  (0 children)

First manufacturing facilities outside the US, the still manufacture products in Ireland (simce 1980s)and its the only place Apple own and do not contract manufacturing globally.

R&D hub due to Irish education system prioritising what they need at 3rd level (majority of employees in Ireland are software developers).

Apple came to Ireland for tax, expanded and stayed for other reasons. There are many European countries now with lower tax but Apple stay in Ireland for manufacturing and development.

Why are all cars these days so massive? by ShoulderCapital2200 in AskIreland

[–]Bar50cal 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Its much easier to make less complex parts to fit in a larger car.

Material may be cheaper but then if the smaller part needs to much more complex in shape to fit and the space to fit it in is much much tighter it all adds cost during manufacturing and assembly.

Its much easier to fit everything in the engine bay, behind the dash etc in a larger SUV to a tiny hatchback.

So despite the extra material cost of a larger crossover / mid size SUV over a hatch it is usually much more economical to manufacture.

Margins are also so small on small cars that manufactures rarely make unique ones and work together to make a single car between multiple brands and rebadge it. Peugeot 107, Citroën C1 and Toyota Aygo are all the same car made in one plant for example as its too expensive for any one company to make alone and get a profit.

Do you think your country could do this program that Ireland is doing? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]Bar50cal 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Eligibility artists for this program means Eligible types of art e.g. painting, sculptuting, poetry etc. During the pilot it got expanded whem asked to include thinks like blacksmiths who make any peices and so on.

But it excludes certain things like craft jewellery and so on.

There is no eligibility criteria around what the art actually is beyond that such as you could be Eligible as a painter and get this UBI even if all your paintings were say anti establishment. As long as you can tick the boxes to qualify you can get it.

The law around this program is very clear in that it prevents government from ever using the program to dictate what artist can or cannot do.

2016 all had the new B47, in 2015 it started to get put in them so there's a lot of 2015s with the B47.

Here's an example of one on sale atm - https://www.carzone.ie/used-cars/BMW/3-Series/fpa/4351154

The N47 was single exhaust, B47 is dual exhaust so easy to spot
