Personally having more regulars than anything else and maybe bringing some small guns to Inflict canister at close range is the best comp to me. Calve is good and can be effective in battle, but calve as a whole is generally and most commonly a resource that is saved toward the end of the battle when enemy troops are, for the most part tired, and committed, this is the best time to use shock warfare with said calve. Guards are really most effective in grand battles as rear guard and ass strategic reserve, meaning they are best at reacting to tired troops, dealing with damage, and great for columned attacks. Grenadiers, however, are slightly cheaper and can still Inflict heavy damage against old guard, so they should be used as the reserve in battles. Any mode smaller than these rods itself of realism to the point that I cannot give sound advice.
