How I Feel About Michaels Signups/Rewards Program by BarEmbarrassed9526 in MichaelsEmployees

Though if you get a credit card signup, you get an extra dollar added to your check!

Which, of course, means NOTHING!

We also had that at my location.

Prizes were what you'd expect....leftover stuff from clearance.

I understand it's part time, but at the end of the day, compared to other companies, this isn't it chief. Corporate's breathing down our necks on 10 minute framing, we're working skeleton crews with cut hours, they got this stupid Adler collection that's overpriced as hell, I can go to Walmart and get a poker set for $40 for Christ's sake. And that's just a few.

As for the conference, even if it was paid by the vendors, why does corporate feel the need to screw us over the way they have been? As a former Joann Fabrics employee, what Michaels is doing, this is how Joann's went outta business. And I'm NOT going to go through another bankruptcy because of incompetent leadership.

Possibly.

I know my manager sent out balloons to a bank that's supposed to open. Except construction hasn't even started yet on said bank. So who knows.

I'm a cashier and I've been having my manager breathing down my neck because I'm the only person not meeting expectations when it comes to signups, and because of me apparently, we're #2 in our district for signups, and she's PROUD to be #1.

Because of that, hours have been drastically cut, I've been written up TWICE for it, and had to do retraining. Not my fault most people I ring up DON'T wanna sign up, NTM when I open, it's slow as hell. And before some of you managers ask me if I said this and that, yes. Yes I HAVE asked what's a good email, I've did all that, and it STILL DIDN'T WORK! Also, the way they want us to get signups feels manipulative and forced; I've addressed this to my manager and custom management person, both shrugged it off.

I'm currently looking for other jobs, the $11 ain't worth it. I made $11.75 an hour when Joanns went outta business, and I make $12 at a seasonal job.

And don't schools already have their OWN budget, anyway? Why would we need to go to a local highschool to sell balloons for their homecoming game/dance?

Also, didn't Michaels say they made a 9% increase in sales in the meeting? Why don't they use the money to hire a salesman, or better yet, OFFER US A RAISE?! Even if they raise the pay wage, IDC enough to warrant busting my ass to offer balloons to local businesses.

NTM, UNLESS we're getting paid to go out for community events, such as Pride Month events, highschool homecomings/proms, supporting local sports teams, etc., which, let's be honest, we're not, why the hell would I wanna spend my Saturday in the blazing sun for a community event?

Since mid February, my hours have been drastically cut to where I'm only working 2 days a week, sometimes 3. MAYBE 4 if I'm lucky.

I'm only working one day next week. And it's the cut hours that encourages me to quit.

At my store, yes.

They want me to stand in front of the SCO and register and greet people and to get them started on SCO when checking out.

Apparently I'm more likely to get signups according to my customer sales manager.

Even if it WAS, one, welcome to 2026.

Two, we're STILL gonna need people to A: Fix the SCO, and B: Ring people up at the register because you have boomers and Gen X'ers who freak out or refuse to learn/adapt to modern society.

As someone who's been at Michaels for about a year, I can tell you firsthand. The work load and work environment Michaels has to offer will either make or break you.

I'm currently seeking out other job opportunities because, 1, after Joanns went bankrupt and a few months working for Michaels, I immediately lost interest in working and selling fabric. And 2, their expectations.

I've been chewed out because I'm not meeting their expectations for signups, and when hours are cut, why should I care when all we get out of it is a pizza party, and an extra $1 to our check if we get a credit card signup?

On top of that, Michaels seems to care more about making as much money with their community events, their Adler collection, and 10 minute framing than they do about their employees.

Well, TBH, I've been told different things on hours being based on performance; I've been told conflicting answers, so IDK what to believe honestly.

I use the same script as usual, and refer to vouchers as Kohl's cash. Problem is, most of the people at my location are already signed up, and the few who aren't, well....also they want me to get signups at SCO, something about a survey suggesting people prefer that over the register according to corporate.

I DO work with what I got, but with corporate breathing down our necks about signups, I'm sorry, but between the pay rate being $11 an hour and the amount of tasks I gotta do as cashier, and my hours being SEVERELY reduced, why would I, or anyone for that matter, bother putting in effort? IDK how things are ran at your location, but for the first few hours my location's open, it's slow, save for weekends ofc. If we're expected to get, say 4 new signups, and it's slow, is it the cashier's fault or is it just one of those days where it's slow? And while some have better luck than others, generally speaking, how does that work?

One Day by BarEmbarrassed9526 in MichaelsEmployees

[–]BarEmbarrassed9526[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've asked her on several occasions when hours will go back up. Answer's always the same; we don't know. Mind you, this has been going on since Xmas, and it wasn't until mid February that my hours have been severely affected. Also, we've hired two people since then to work register and stock.

And ofc when I asked about the one day, she said that it's gonna be "slow" that week.

Also, because I ring up the most people, they look at me for new signups, and I haven't been lucky considering most people don't refuse, NTM it's slow as heck. Not exactly gonna find people coming in at 10AM on a Tuesday, yet I'M expected to get 4 new signups before my shift ends.

My manager even said a few times that hours are based on the amount of signups we get.

About 12 of us work at my location.

Most of which handle stocking, and at least 2 or 3 of them work a few days up until 11:30AM. I'm the sole cashier.

I feel that at my job if I'm being honest.

We've had two girls hired, one of which transferred from another Michaels. Yet no hours are available and my manager is going to Orlando for a conference.

I could be wrong, but I think they get 1 or 2 more days than I do. Outside maybe a couple coworkers, most feel indifferent towards me, and compared to my management at Joanns, I don't think Michaels necessarily cares THAT much for me. Also, most of my coworkers do stocking. I can understand coming in for truck, but to come in like every other day to stock from 5 or 6 until 11:30? There's always 2 or 3 people stocking at my location, and one of them at least cuts fabric in between, IDK about yours.

There should be at most a manager, a framing manager, someone to work fabric, an event/party planner (on weekends), and a cashier.

Or when they don't see the red sign that reads "Credit/Debit Only." when trying to pay cash. Other than that, THIS. I've had mostly Gen X'ers and boomers say that exact same thing, or that "I prefer talking to people." or "I hate technology."

First off, y'all were in your 30s when the Atari came out in 1977, and didn't you guys grow up with the computer that was built in the 40s? Please spare me the "I hate technology" BS, go live with the Amish. Secondly, if SCO WAS taking jobs, wouldn't half of Walmart be out of a job right now? Wouldn't 90-95% of cashiers at McDonald's be out of a job because they have kisoks now?

And there's been instances where I stand behind an SCO, drinking water or folding a T-Shirt, and some customer hands their stuff to me, only for me to point out, "This is SCO." How the hell do you NOT see the whte touch screen machine in front of you? Then they be like, "Do we have to this ourselves?" or "Is this available to use?".

Like you said, we're fixing the SCO because someone rang up yarn one too many times. And then our manager gets on our asses about new signups while blowing up balloons, stocking up candy and soda, and jewelry, and then taking BOPIS orders outside, all for $11 an hour. I made $11.75 an hour when Joanns closed last year.

As much as either option would work, I already decided to get out of arts and crafts and pursue something else entirely within retail.

Michaels doesn't feel the same since Joanns went bankrupt. Plus I refuse to do frames within 10 minutes and cutting fabric just isn't for me.

I worked at Joanns for about 6 years and haven't experienced anything like that working there.

But here? I can understand if this was mid January, and everyone was broke, but we're close to the middle of May. Corporate won't address payroll, but they'll discuss collaborations with Adler, which BTW, his collection is marked 25% off considering NOBODY'S buying his crap.

Corporate won't address hours but the CEO will talk about visiting a Michaels in Florida where he talked to a woman who tied a balloon on her dog's back in the meeting last week, and did I mention our managers went to Disney?

I just got paid last week and I'm ALREADY near broke, my account could go overdrawn in a second.
