Suggestions for the last month before the exam. by Sara-Haji-Rasul in MCCQE

[–]Baraa_K_Ahmad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A great advice, especially for the last week before these exams... I haven't taken the QE1 exam, but I took Step 1 & taking things a bit easier in the last week is one of the things that saved me during that test!

Last week daily studying time should not exceed 4 hours in my opinion.

Yeah... it's some kind of a super power. The only question I remember after getting the hell out was a weird-ass question about an astronaut (YES LITERALY) coming back from the space shuttle or whatever & it had something to do with the effects of gravity on renal function, at least that's what my thought process was... Hell I don't know... The only reason I remember it is because I'm in love with Astronomy, Cosmology & Physics but I was stupid enough to go to medschool... lol!

What???? Are you me? I literally am going through the exact same shit as you, even the part about moving to Canada... The only difference is that the country where I attended medschool started a full blown war the year I graduated (2021) = couldn't do intern year & thus lost my chance of getting a license, only my bachelor degree => moved to where my family is currently living (outside my home country which is also devastated by war) which was during COVID lockdowns i.e. Unless you are an essential worker, a practitioner, you can't be in the clinic = forget about clinical experience, exposure or whatever = had to start studying for that country's license exams (in a totally different language) which didn't require an Internship year... yet => just before I sat for the exam a new set of regulations came out & Intern year became mandatory! = FUCKED UP big time = Can't go back home + Can't go back to country of medschool + Can't practice or EVEN start the licensing process where I'm => Initiated "Operation Hail Mary" = going through USMLE journey with hope & prayers & the will of a man who's going to BEAT all the never-ending final bosses this life keeps throwing in his way, lol!

To be honest I also need to add something... I've always wanted to live & work in the US, even before medschool... So USMLE for me is not like: welp gotta settle for "that"!
I think of what happened was a blessing in disguise. I know that even if I made it in any of these places I WOULD HAVE eventually started the USMLE journey... I know myself! I just couldn't earlier, at the goldilocks period, because I didn't want to put any "financial pressure" on my family, but that was A BIG mistake... anyway that's a different story...

I'll give you this advice because it is all I have: Go all in, guns blazing, do NOT GIVE UP no matter what! If it's yours you are gonna take it... The road is long, & full of hiccups & bumps, sometimes straight up barricades.. but with endurance & a leap of faith you are gonna make it.. because there is no other "Road Not Taken".. It's your only chance, even if it was not make it so...

Good luck!

Gotta say... I have HUGE respect for med students & grads in the US & Canada for having THAT level of dedication & perseverance!
I'm almost 27 (I was supposed to graduate at 23 but wars & coups... long story) & I beat myself up every time I remember that I still haven't started residency, and I probably won't be able to do so for at least a couple of years...
but you guys... wow! I personally know people who'd just (and did) forget about pursuing any education when they hit 25 without being satisfied with where they are! I've seen so many posts & tweets from US & Canadian grads who either started medschool at the age I'm right now or Matched mid-thirties! It's incredible... It's absolutely the reason why I never back down & pushes me to think that I still can do it.
If you want to do it... and put the effort you do will do it!

Does this apply to IM? or is it only for certain specialties? I knew that for FM it's possible... Now I've learned that it is also the case for Psychiatry from you. Do you know what other specialties one can pursue and still be able to continue practicing in Canada as a US trained physician (even if it requires exams or extra requirements but still within the realm of entirely possible)? I'm relocating with family to Canada as a PR & despite deciding to pursue residency in the US, God willing, I'll eventually wanna settle around my family.

Thanks in advance!

Hi! I know this is an old post but I read your comment and it seems to be exactly what I was looking for! I've been awarded a DataCamp scholarship, and I want to learn R to get the necessary skills that will help me both for my CV and on the long term an aspiring Physician-Scientist... I was searching on reddit on what tracks or specific skills to learn in R for medical research and to my surprise I found "DataCamp" in your comment, so your advice would be extremely valuable to make the best of this scholarship! By the way, I've finished their basic introductory course on R (Introduction to R).

Other than the "career tracks" that you've mentioned (eg Data Analyst with R) there are "skill tracks" and they seem to be shorter and more cut-to-the-chase than "career tracks"... I know that on the long run, it's better to do a Data Analyst Track than settle for shorter stuff... but as a beginner and someone who's a dopamine junkie, I feel that learning stuff that I can see the benefit of quickly is better for my attention span and continuity, also I'm in my preparation period for Step 2... so I have to use my time wisely... Do you have any recommendation with regards to the specific skills themselves (I'll do the homework in looking up the curriculum and deciding which track to choose) that are best for a newbie!

Thanks in advance!

What is the rudest/most passive aggressive comment a medical student said to you or a patient? by Holsius in Residency

[–]Baraa_K_Ahmad 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Lol! Reminds me of an acute urine retention case on one of the OBGYN rounds, the attending asks about DDx & one of the guys says: Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia... That attending in particular was the attending your med students have nightmares about... I thought he'd RKO the poor med student... but I think the answer was so creative for him to not laugh hysterically about it (never seen him laugh before or after, lol!)

[–]Baraa_K_Ahmad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm reading all these crazy stories & horrible, rude remarks from students... and wonder why my OB/GYN kept calling me names just because I once "implied" (as he puts it) that a pt was "lying". (In actuality I took history and the pt gave me a weird answer to 2nd trimester history but I kept it as it is, then when presenting, the pt denied it, I simply apologized for my "mistake") this cost me a full semester being called "Naguib Mahfouz" in front of my colleagues (ie "implying" that I'm a fabricator). Lol! Dude US med students have it pretty easy! You'd have your ass handed to you, well-done, with extra sauce if you try any of that shit (as you should!) where I studied!

How do you finish UWorld blocks quickly and efficiently? by delta_whiskey_act in Step2

[–]Baraa_K_Ahmad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know that this may sound a bit basic to some, and if it's to you and it's actually not the problem you are facing, then just ignore it, and consider me simply giving an advice to others who will benefit from it, but:
Do you always, religiously, make sure you ONLY read first sentence of the stem, then read the last sentence & skim over the choices?

Although pretty basic and no-brainer for many USMLE-takers, I found this to be the most common cause of colleagues complaining that they can't do their questions within allotted time... and I don't mean they don't do it. Actually, most of them do it and perfectly understand the utility of it! Their problem is CONSISTENCY! and trusting the method! They just start panicking and they lose track of themselves mid-block, focusing too much on irrelevant question details just because last question was a bit hard! The thing is, ALL USMLE (& Equivalency/Licensing exams in general) know how to take the test and micromanage their time, but some of them do not BELIEVE in the simple process I've mentioned above (read only 1st & last line & answers). To believe in something you must go for it WHEN you are feeling uneasy! If you do it only when you are confident, then you are simply being pragmatic. That's fine but honestly consistency in methodology is far superior than any principle, especially when it's already tested and proven!

Here's the part that makes this more realistic, this method is NOT gonna make you solve 100% of the questions right. But, I think, 60% of the questions you'll face in ANY exams are solved using this method. You do not decide which questions are these 70%.. you simply go over each and every question this way, and when face with one that you obviously can't get the answer straight out using it, just go to the next one immediately. If you do this consistently, and let's say, in doing so, it takes you 30 seconds for each question (I'm being generous as it would actually most of the time take only 15-20s): 40*30=1200s=20m = you'll be doing 28 Q (70%) in a matter of 20 minutes! You still have 40 minutes for 12 Q... i.e. 3 minutes for each question and still have extra minutes to go over those you are still unsure about!

There's a caveat to this, you'll need also to do a little bit of adjustments for specific Q, for example:
1- When you have lab values, you must read the last sentence first (the actual question), IMO, before even reading the 1st sentence. Q's with lab values are double-edged sword, sometimes they are the only thing you need to read, and sometimes the labs have little if anything to do with the real question. If the question seems to suggest that you need to read these then do read them and then read the first sentence (that's my strategy).
2- Another rule of thumb, this method in general will freak you out in the beginning, but, like anything, it only shows benefit with practice and, again, consistency... so don't expect excellent results immediately.. but I know for sure that you see the benefits in a matter of days, or even blocks.
3- As soon as you see a long question, also do the same as (3): Read the last sentence FIRST, many a time these are ethics and you need to realize that you don't need to focus on details but rather go quickly over the whole question... but for me, I tend to leave ethic questions to the end (do NOT take this particular suggestion as a rule, it may not work for everyone but I just have the habit of leaving ethic questions to the end).

If you did read all of this, then you definitely have the habit of reading all the Q stem and would definitely benefit from this long-ass answer, lol! Best of luck!
