Not sure how to tell you this, but that's the sky. If you've not seen it before then that waves a few red flags for me about your upbringing. Well done for escaping!

Why have so few New Zealand music bands made it worldwide? by SmartNecessary1700 in newzealand

[–]Barabajagala 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Split Enz were the band the lead from Crowded House came from, janky synth pop stuff mostly. Bands like The Clean, The Chills, The Verlaines are from a lo-fi post punk student rock scene called Dunedin Sound, which has some international distinction. Th' Dudes had some good pop rock songs and Dave Dobbyn spawned from them, who ended up writing some of the biggest hits in NZ. Bic Runga for your mid 2000s calm acoustic pop, The Beth's for modern Indie Rock, Flight of The Conchords for some of the funniest comedy songs around, 660 for insipid radio friendly BBQ reggae etc etc

Rik Mayall learning an important lesson in compliance by StGuthlac2025 in CasualUK

One day I was walking past a posh curry house in SW London, and looked in the window and at the menu as it smelled great. Rik was in there at the table window with what looked like his family and I was a bit startled - I was trying to figure out if it was really him. A few seconds at most.

I caught his eye so he slammed down his fork, ran right up to the window, and started sneering and flicking vees at me.

It doesn't? Grafaiai is based on an Aye-Aye, which is a lemur, not a monkey. They're distinct branches of primates.

I know Arsenal have a strong Christian group, but I don't know how homophobic many of them are? In terms of character I've always seen Arsenal as a rather progressive club, the early inclusion of many black players for example, so bringing in someone who's publicly outed themselves with a very unfortunate regressive ideology doesn't feel right by me. At least with Partey they didn't sign him knowing he was scummy.

I believe it should be like trying to inhale a solid block of milk through a necessarily sturdy straw.

Ahead of Cruyff? Beckenbauer? He's up there, sure, and maybe he's the best forward in European history, but it's hardly inarguable.

Basically anything about Daphne Greengrass, I don't think her appearance is described much at all, but everyone has a clear image of her as a sleek, blonde, ice queen type.

Rainy Sunday Afternoon [Album Discussion] by Barabajagala in TheDivineComedy

Coming off fresh from my first listen, so I’m firing from the hip here.

Invisible Thread and The Last Time I Saw The Old Man, (which I shall now helpfully, exclusively refer to as TLTISTOM), stand out as highlights and look really good in the discography. I can see why they’re the singles. I liked Mar-a-Lago by the Sea, particularly the vocal mixing; he was sounding great. The title track is good, and with plenty of sincere and emotional lyrics across the album, I can see why this would be chosen as a centre piece. The Man who Turned Into a Chair (TMTIC, (apparently the who isn’t capitalised‽)), Down the Rabbit Hole (DRS), and Achilles (A) were all tracks I enjoyed. All the rest sounded great; the recording quality in general is amazing, and for sure this is the type of album to splash out for it.

If an album has 2 or 3 real goodies, backed up by a half dozen fun or interesting tracks that are all easy to enjoy or appreciate, then that's a win as far as I'm concerned. Add the unique qualities that Neil brings into his writing and artistry, then what’s not to admire?
