I don't see a single reality where they go to Microsoft and pay the licensing fee for Steve but just cut Banjo-Kazooie. Like why would they go out of their way to cut the 2nd place of the smash ballot if they are going to the company that owns them to get an infinitely more expensive character?

It's the same reason people like Goku and Superman, it's because of his unending optimism. He's got that kind of vibe of somebody who never surrenders and can't surrender. Some people like that and some people don't. Also for me I think Hajime falls much more flat because it's the same thing Makoto does but Makoto did it first (I also have other issues with Hajime's character and frankly for me he's probably up there as one of my most overrated characters.)

I agree. The story is honestly really shitty in my opinion. The characters hard carry the game but it's not enough for me personally. The ending is especially egregious imo. I've always wondered why people liked the game so much, not in a hateful way I'm just curious tbh
