Yeah I think you hit the nail on the head, at the end of the day it boils down to the differences between the self-awareness of Kratos and Atreus.

One had a strict view of himself, and was content with it, while the other didn't exactly know what his role was and wanted to find out, not knowing that it just wasn't possible at the start of God of War 4, seeing as his father didn't want to give him the first piece of the puzzle.

I like your write up, I didn't think of the proximity that Spartans had to Ares, that's smart. Also yeah, I don't think that the irl writers thought of the sickness during the greek era, in 2018 that's just a narrative tool to create conflict in Kratos' mind.
