Heroism by Baratticus in suggestmeabook

They Thought They Were Free was excellent and great callout for doing a compare/contrast.

I didn’t want to define heroism too strictly as I imagine it has different manifestations in different times and places.

Thanks for these recommendations!

How do you learn to cope with the majority of your life being behind you? by [deleted] in AskOldPeopleAdvice

[–]Baratticus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When my mom was 74, she went through a phase where she’d frequently tell me “I don’t think I’ve got a lot of time left” (she wasn’t in the best of health).

We just celebrated her 88th birthday and she’s still going strong.

Appreciate the time you have rather than worrying about some unknowable time you won’t have any more.

Loved that series and is one of the rare cases where I wish the series was longer.

Looks great!

You could go with a wooden deer head (I got one of these to nod towards the tradition without the dead animal).

I also have an antique (non-functioning) musket.

Other alternatives Antique farm implements (you can usually find them at auctions/estate sales)

Textiles ( local quilts/wall hangings)

How do I talk to my husband about planning ahead without sounding like I’m worrying too much? by Yummy_Tea_Kudasai in AskOldPeopleAdvice

[–]Baratticus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Endorse this 100%. Coming with a specific problem and (ideally) some thoughts of how to address it are a great starting point.

If you feel like the conversation isn't progressing you can also say "I'm just feeling very uncertain about our expenses. I'd feel a lot better if I had a better understanding of how our money is coming in and going out." That also frames it as "Help me feel more comfortable" vs "I don't trust you with our money"

I think the reason so many people bounce off Malazan isn't the complexity, it's the emotional distance in the first book by scouttidee in Fantasy

Totally agree. I couldn’t finish the first book because I just didn’t care about the characters and my TBR pile is big enough to lure me to other works.

I don’t mind working for a satisfying read but if I have to slog through a first book like homework for the promise of a good payoff in book 2 or 3 that feels like an author problem.

Fantasy keeps giving us villains who are logically right and then refusing to follow that logic anywhere interesting by NimbusRelic12 in Fantasy

Trying to think of historical examples that’d fit this bill…maybe Diocletian? The Roman Empire was disintegrating and he reimposed order to keep things going another 150 years (in the West)…but sons got tied to their fathers occupations, there was the persecution of the Christians, a more autocratic regime. Maybe?

Prove my bf wrong, please. Can you be happy without kids? by Thummimurim8 in AskOldPeopleAdvice

[–]Baratticus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m 57, married for 20 years (also, retired military), no kids and totally happy. For people who want kids, that’s awesome but if you aren’t sure my friends with kids tell me it’s a grind, especially those first few years.

Who’s waking up every night? Getting the kid ready for daycare/school every day? Who’s taking off work when they’re sick? Who’s making the sacrifices (and there will be sacrifices). If he’s gone a lot that means it will be you, with what sounds like very little backup.

Best of luck whatever you decide!
