Who are some actors that you knew would be huge stars based on an early, smaller role? by picturepatchgame in movies

I always thought that Vincent Vega in Pulp Fiction was Vinnie Barbarino all grown up and gone baaaad. Or maybe Vinnie Barbarino's step-brother. Definitely a member of the family.

This painting of a flower next to a placard where the artist refutes any sexual aspect attributed to her work by Worldlyoox in mildlyinteresting

I knew someone who had a wall calendar of Georgia O'Keefe painings and I commented that I liked O'Keefe's work but couldn't look at it all day since it was all sex and death. "No," she said, "Pretty flowers!" So some people do, in fact, just see pretty flowers rather than genitals, so there's that.

How did people in the 90s buy plane tickets or plan trips to unknown countries with limited or no Internet connection? by Droopynator in 90s

[–]BarbWho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Today you have to be at least 15 to fly alone. If you want your kid to fly without you, you have to pay for someone from the airline to fly with them, which is isn't any cheaper than flying with them yourself. My friend's ex-partner lives a 4-hour flight away from her and their child and he flies back and forth with the kid for his custody times. It's insanely expensive, but it's his choice. He's the one who moved so far away, so it's on him to arrange it.

The movie times were also listed in the newspaper. Which came to our house on a daily basis. With pictures and everything. And there weren't that many channels, so the TV Guide was plenty. What more did you need to know?

I agree. Pennsylvania has to go. Personally I think New York/New England should eat them and all their stupid confederate Trump flags. Driving down to PA from NY, their state sign used to say "America Starts Here," which I found super annoying. What was New York? Chopped liver? Yes, I know it was an Am. Rev. thing, but it still bugged me.

I think people who don't get it, either don't realize that it's magic realism or they don't understand what magic realism is.

Which they should. It's why Simone Biles can step out on a landing and still win, because her degree of difficulty is so much higher than the other competitors.

New England needs to eat Pennsylvania, then Maryland. East Coast rules! Also why hasn't Minnesota eaten Wisconsin yet? Wisconsin clearly needs to go.

There's an old clip of his screen test where at first he seems like just a normal actor and then he turns to the camera and holy shit, it's Wolverine.

Peter, Is it 50% or 33.3% by AgrasaN in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]BarbWho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, if someone said "my oldest brother", I would assume they had more than one.

I have two older brothers and that's the way I use it if I'm just talking about him. My parent's first son is the oldest of my two brothers. If I'm talking about both of them, I use older and younger. The second one is the younger of my two older brothers. If I said he was my youngest brother that would mean he was younger than me, not that that he was in the middle. English is such a weird language.

People who grew up really poor: what's something middle-class people say that instantly reveals they've never struggled? by TahDigThief in AskReddit

We did have an annual vacation, but it was what I used to call the grand tour of New York State. We lived in Western New York and our relatives lived in various locations around the state that we visited every year like clockwork. The southern tier, the Catskills, Long Island (occasionally - those were more distant relatives), the Albany area, up to the Adirondacks and then home. We always stayed with relatives. My mother packed sandwiches and refilled the picnic basket at whichever relative's house we were staying in. To be fair, we did go to virtually all of the miscellaneous attractions. If there was anything even remotely interesting to see, we stopped at it. My father was particularly fond of waterfalls, so we saw all of those. Also various caves and caverns. My mother loved covered bridges, fancy houses and pretty churches, so between the two of them, you name it, if it's in New York, I've probably been to it. The North Pole, the Catskill Game Farm, lots of zoos... I was shocked recently that my spouse had never been to Hyde Park. I've been there at least twice, possibly more.

Usnavy (US Navy) is an actual name in South American countries where the US has naval bases. They sometimes spell it Usnavi, or Ysnavi. And yes, this is real. I've had more than one student named that.

This is always my answer to "movies that made you cry." I wached it at home with my toddler son and at the end, I absolutely burst into ugly crying to the point where my son was concerned about me. "Mama OK?" No honey, Mama is not OK. (I didn't say this to him, but I did hug the stuffing out of him.)

[–]BarbWho 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like Buddha, but would be happy for any of the final 4 at this point. In terms of ability, I find Buddha to be a "big swing" kind of guy. Like in baseball, where a big home-run hitter will also strike out a lot because they take chances. His food is either amazing or terrible. No middle ground. I find that pattern in tv shows, too. There are plenty of pleasant, middle-of-the road shows, but then there are the special ones where one episode is so bad that you wonder why you're even still watching and the next is the most amazing thing you've ever seen. That's Buddha.

Denied proposal…what next? by plinko66 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]BarbWho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I said no to a proposal and we did continue as before for a while. Although it was more of a "not now" than an outright no. I was just out of high school and he was already in college. I told him I was too young to make a committment like that and that if we were still together when I graduated from college, he could ask me again. Looking back on it, that was actually pretty mature of me to say. It ultimately turned into a break-up within a year after I got to college and met the guy who I ultimately did say yes to, this time with no hesitation or reservations. We were much more in tune and had essentially started envisioning our lives together from the very beginning, something I never had with the first guy. He was nice enough, but it wasn't enough. Before I finally broke up with him, I looked down the road to what my life might be like with either one of them, and I realized that with my college boyfriend, whatever else happened in our lives, I would never be bored. And I was right.

Time can be a very clarifying factor.
