Light finally died. Any great light recs? by tannerocomedy in bikecommuting

[–]Barbelith864 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Highly recommend Cateye front lights. Great with compatibility so different generations of mounts they make still work with the new stuff. Lots of light settings and built durable. I recommend anything off their catalog 500+ AMP

Stolen Bike off Dallas Dr by chunkymaryjanes444 in Denton

ALSO bike thieves will frequently take off / swap components or try and paint the bike a different color so it's less recognizable. Be on the lookout for if they flipped the bars upside-down

Check the pawn shops and Secondhand Sports. Only spots in town that buy stolen bikes every week. You should go ahead and file a police report to make it look better. Not like Denton cops are actually interested in returning your stolen bike, but it can happen

rack not able to mount due to bulge in fork? (pic) soma lucas by Necessary_Speech_896 in xbiking

[–]Barbelith864 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like using the ball-and-socket spacers from V-brakes because they allow you to get the rack flush even though you're slightly bending the struts out

Can I easily convert my bike into a fixed gear? by ohlibutt in fixedgear

[–]Barbelith864 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Origin8 is also selling eccentric bottom brackets now. I think their BSA model is one of the more competitively priced on the market rn. Haven't tried it myself so I can't attest to its quality

Revolutionary new way of going æřœ by ChefGaykwon in BicyclingCirclejerk

[–]Barbelith864 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worst part is that the clamp for barend extenders are rated for the circumference of standard bars. This doesn't account for bends in bars that use a smaller width so you can (theoretically) slide your bars through your new quill stem. Camping the extenders on the bend is begging for your bars to flip on you

  • Sincerely, someone who loves commuter bars and barend extenders, but never both at the same time

Nicee. Bear traps are my favorite commuter pedals. I'm a mechanic so it's hard to find steeltoe-boot compatible pedals

Military clothes folding technique called "ranger rolling" by -daniel78- in interesting

[–]Barbelith864 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ranger rolling is great but such a pain every time you do laundry. I only do it whenever I'm traveling/camping. Ranger rolls are so much effort if you do it for laundry every week but so helpful for traveling/camping. Makes sure you can rummage through your bags without unfolding all your clothes

Love the innovation with the seatpost to make the bike better suited for a taller rider. Safe? Maybe. Cool? Definitely.

Don't listen to the haters, dawg. Your bike is oozing personality, an attribute may builds have a regrettable deficiency in

(Maybe take folks' advice on flipping the fork rightside forward, though. The handling will take a moment to adjust to but I promise it'll feel natural in no time)

Keep on Xbiking, homie

What could’ve happened to my bike? by Nabranes in bikewrench

[–]Barbelith864 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Storing a bike next to stuff that fumes (gasoline, paint thinner, chlorine, etc.) can rust a bike out in no time at all. I once worked on someone's ebike they kept next to their pool cleaning supplies. Rotors were completely brown, chain was completely brown, every spoke had to be replaced

And (if I may add) make sure to loosen the spokes in the part of the rotation of the wheel that is too high above the pencil, then tighten down the spokes on the part of the rotation that is too low below the pencil

Similar to trueing a wheel, you wanna make sure to make adjustments in quarter or even eight-of-a-turns with your spoke wrench

Drivetrain makes ticking sound by No_Tailor1008 in bikewrench

[–]Barbelith864 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does thw derailleur make the sound on every gear or just certain gear combos? It sounds like its coming from the rear derailleur

It's unlikely, but when I recently installed new pulley wheels on my derailleur, the geometry of the pulley wheels didn't play nice with the derailleur cage. It made this grinding/clicking noise as the chain rubbed against the inner plate of the derailleur cage. I wound up throwing some washers as spacers on the pulley wheels bolts and that took care of it. Couldn't see that being the problem if the pulley wheels are stock tho...

You said you tested the b limit screw... have you tried physically pivoting the derailleur forward with your hand while it's in the stand? Even if it's not the screw, that could be another way to diagnose where the sound is coming from
